Eoin Morgan pleased to field 'full strength' side but holds out hope for Joe Root

Test captain not out of the running as England start on blueprint for next year’s T20 World Cup in India

Alan Gardner03-Sep-2020Eoin Morgan has welcomed the chance to field something close to a first-choice T20I team in the forthcoming series against Australia, but made it clear that Joe Root is not out of the running as England start putting together their blueprint for next year’s T20 World Cup in India.During previous white-ball assignments against Ireland and Pakistan, Morgan has had to do without several players due to their involvement in the Test bio-secure environment. But with Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood returning to the squad, England are almost at “full strength” – missing only Jason Roy, through injury, and Ben Stokes, who has travelled to New Zealand to be with his unwell father.”For the first time this summer we are seeing the majority of our best team on the park and that’s great,” Morgan said. “Bar injury and absent players, which is only a couple, we are at full strength. That is a nice place to be. We don’t have to pick our best XI every series that we play because we can’t put all our eggs in one basket, because we need 16 or 17 players in the lead up to a World Cup, all vying for selection in the best 15. We found in the lead in to the 50-overs World Cup that was the best position to be in.”ALSO READ: Wood keen to make impression against ‘biggest rivals’ AustraliaWhile Morgan has been comfortable with giving opportunities to fringe players, he warned last week it would be important to get “our strongest team on the park as often as we can” in order to focus on role definition ahead of the 2021 World Cup.On Root’s case to be considered part of that group, Morgan indicated that England thought there would be more value in the Test captain getting some T20 cricket under his belt with Yorkshire, to better enable him to press his case among a clutch of top-order batting candidates.”Yes, we have had that conversation with Joe and he certainly does have a future. The conversation was surrounding Joe not getting in the best XI at the moment. We didn’t want to carry him round and him not play any cricket. Joe wants to play T20 cricket and put his best case forwards particularly when he doesn’t have a lot of opportunity to go back to Yorks and play T20 cricket. We felt it was a really good opportunity for him to do that.”While Root played a vital role as an accumulator at No. 3 in the side that reached the 2016 World T20 final, his position has been squeezed by England’s preference for using Buttler at the top of the order, as well as the stellar T20I record built up by Dawid Malan and the emergence of Tom Banton.Morgan confirmed that Buttler would open alongside Jonny Bairstow against Australia on Friday, saying that along with Roy they counted as “three of our greatest-ever white-ball players”. England remain keen to give Buttler as many balls per innings in which to wreak destruction as possible, although Morgan hinted he could still be redeployed to the finisher role he fulfils in ODI cricket.”Like I have said before, we will continue with this until we feel that it’s not working,” Morgan said. “We feel that Jason, Jonny and Jos are three of our greatest-ever white-ball players. They are unbelievable strikers of the ball. They’re batsmen who you do not want to bowl against. If one of the three of them gets going past the first six overs of the Powerplay, and into those middle overs, it puts us in a really strong position for the last 14.”We always pose the question of how do we get the best out of all of our players. When you talk about those three guys specifically, it’s more obvious with Jonny and Jason batting at the top of the order. Trying to get the best out of Jos, at the moment we feel the more balls he faces, the more influence he can have on the game. If we find things down the line haven’t exactly worked out we can always fall back on Jos in the middle order.”England’s wealth of options at the top has also masked, to a degree, their uncertainty around Nos. 5 and 6, where a number of candidates – from Sam Billings, to Joe Denly and Sam Curran – have been tried over the last couple of years, without staking a strong claim.”One of the challenges we do have down the line is trying to find a middle-to-lower-order batter that can come in and play in an aggressive manner from ball one,” Morgan said. “Very difficult to predict who that might be because very few do that at county level – they either bat in the top four or open. At the moment we do have an abundance of talented players who open the batting or bat at three.”Moeen Ali responded to a move up the order to No. 5 with his highest T20I score since 2015 in Tuesday’s defeat to Pakistan. Ali afterwards admitted to “coasting” at times recently, but credited his captain for showing faith in him; Morgan said that he was hopeful Ali had now rediscovered his motivation.”I have spoken to him a little bit about that,” Morgan said. “Sometimes in your career, if there is no direct goal or direct drive in what you are trying to do, your mind is not challenged, your body is not challenged. It’s always important to have that. It might be a team goal that motivates you, it might be an individual goal for different guys. It’s really important to have that.”Morgan was also pleased to have Archer back to play his first limited-overs international since bowling the Super Over in last year’s World Cup final, although he warned against overburdening the pace bowler with expectations after weeks of discussion about his role in the Test side.”It’s great to have him back. He’s one of our match-winners and to have another one in your team is great – he’s a huge asset. I just think we need to manage the level of expectation of what he produces throughout the series. Obviously, he has played a lot during the summer and he is very excited about playing in this series but we saw at Old Trafford in the first game [against Pakistan] guys took a little bit of time to get into their rhythm. So, the level of expectation naturally will be high but within reason.”

Clement could wave bye-bye to Goldson as Rangers eye 20 y/o colossus

The upcoming summer transfer window officially opens for business later this month and it could be a busy period for Glasgow Rangers as they look to improve their squad.

Brazilian left-back Jefte has already agreed to join on a permanent deal from Fluminense to bolster the team's options at left-back, following Borna Barisic's departure on a free transfer.

Kemar Roofe, Jon McLaughlin, Ryan Jack, and John Lundstram have also been released by the Light Blues, which means that the roster has lost depth in multiple positions.

Manager Philippe Clement and head of recruitment Nils Koppen must navigate the upcoming window to ensure that they come out the other side of it with a squad that can compete to win the Scottish Premiership title.

The Ibrox giants have not won the division in any of the last three seasons, with their rivals Celtic pipping them to it once again this term, but did lift the League Cup during the 2023/24 campaign.

Changes could be made to the defensive options at Clement's disposal as the Belgian boss is reportedly looking at a deal for a young central defender.

Rangers interested in AC Milan youngster

According to the Gallant View podcast, Rangers are eyeing up a bargain swoop to sign Clinton Nsiala on a free transfer from Italian giants AC Milan this summer.

The 20-year-old enforcer is out of contract ahead of the 2024/25 campaign and could arrive at Ibrox on the cheap, as they would not have to pay a transfer fee to bring him to Scotland.

However, it currently remains to be seen how far advanced a potential deal is and how interested in making the switch to Glasgow the defender is, as he may prefer to remain in Italy or assess his options elsewhere.

It was recently reported by Al-Riyadiya, as relayed by BBC Sport, that Steven Gerrard is lining up a swoop to sign centre-back Connor Goldson for Al-Ettifaq.

The former Gers boss would like to reunite with the English battler and Light Blues captain James Tavernier, with the ex-Liverpool midfielder preparing moves to sign both of them ahead of next season.

That report did not reveal how much Rangers would demand for either of those players or whether they are prepared to cash in on them at all.

Clement could, though, wave bye-bye to Goldson and cash in on him amid this interest in his services by securing a deal to sign Nsiala from Milan on a free transfer.

Why it could be time to move on from Connor Goldson

The veteran defender turns 32 later this year and the Light Blues may not get many more chances to make money from him before his value starts to decrease with his age rising into his 30s.

He has racked up 309 first-team appearances for the Scottish giants in all competitions throughout his career to date, and has undoubtedly been a fantastic servant to the club – given how many times the star has played for them over the years.

Connor Goldson and James Tavernier

However, Rangers have only won one league title in his six years at Ibrox and it could be time for a fresh approach to the new campaign, with new heroes emerging.

Clement may want to fully start his own era, in his first full season in charge, by offloading the experienced players who have been at the club for many years and consistently lost out on the title to Celtic, to then bring in new talents who are not weighed down by failures of the past.

Goldson, at 31, is heading into the latter stages of his career and has been on the wrong end of too many title races during his time in Glasgow.

Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

He is not a player with the potential to grow and improve and keeping him at Ibrox now could see his powers wane as his age rises and his mobility declines, which is why now could be the perfect time to part ways with him.

If Gerrard and Al-Ettifaq are ready to put millions on the table to snap the defender up then it could be an ideal move for all parties involved, with the Saudi side getting their man, Rangers getting money in return, and the player getting a chance to reunite with his former manager.

Why Rangers should sign Clinton Nsiala

However, the Gers would need to bring in another centre-back in order to wave bye-bye to Goldson first and Nsiala could be the man brought in to facilitate that exit.

The former France U16 international is a left-footed star who operates on the left side of the defence, which means that he would not be a direct replacement for the English ace.

However, his arrival at Ibrox would then allow the right-footed John Souttar, who played on the left side this season, to move over to his stronger foot next to Nsiala.

John Souttar

It would be a risky move by Rangers, though, as Nsiala is yet to make his first-team debut and that means that he is not a proven senior performer who you could confidently predict to hit the ground running in Glasgow.

However, his sublime form at U19 level for Milan during the 2023/24 campaign suggests that the potential is there for him to emerge as an excellent signing for the Gers.

As you can see in the table above, Nsiala was an aggressive defender for the Italian giants' youth side with almost twice as many ball recoveries and over ten times as many interceptions per game as Goldson made for Rangers in the Premiership.

This suggests that the 20-year-old colossus could win possession back for his side more frequently by winning the ball back through recoveries, interceptions, and duels won – limiting the number of chances that are created on Jack Butland's goal.

However, the Gers star has the advantage over him when it comes to his success rate in the air, which could be an area for the young star to work on if he arrives in Glasgow this summer.

Clement could sign his own Aaron Ramsey in early Rangers swoop

Whilst there is no guarantee that Nsiala will be able to translate that level of performance over to the Premiership, his form in Italy is an indicator of the kind of talent Clement could land and why it could allow him to wave bye-bye to Goldson and kickstart a new era in the Light Blues defence.

Ballon d'Or 2024: Nominees revealed for the Golden Ball with Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham and Rodri all in contention

The shortlist for world football's most prestigious individual award has been revealed ahead of the ceremony in Paris on October 28

The Ballon d'Or. Love it or loathe it, it's the award every footballer in the world dreams of one day winning. And now, after a memorable 2023-24 campaign, the shortlist of nominees for the 2024 Golden Ball has been announced.

There are a host of top names vying to claim the prize that Lionel Messi took home for the eighth time in 2023, with performances not only at club level, but also at the various major tournaments that took place over the past 12 months having been taken into account when selecting this year's list of potential winners.

Who will take home the prize? Will Vinicius Jr be rewarded for his crucial goals in leading Real Madrid to a treble of trophies? Or will his team-mate Jude Bellingham earn recognition for his remarkable debut campaign at the Bernabeu? Manchester City star Rodri, too, is in contention after winning the Premier League at club level before going on to star at Euro 2024 for winners Spain.

We will have to wait until the ceremony in Paris on Monday, October 28 to find out, but for now, here are the players who have been shortlisted for football's ultimate individual honour:

  • Getty Images Sport

    Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid)

The English midfielder enjoyed a stunning start to life at Real Madrid following his move from Borussia Dortmund last summer. It was a dream debut season as the Spanish giants went on to claim the Champions League and La Liga titles, with Bellingham scoring 23 goals and registering 11 assists across both competitions. He then went on to play a key role as England reached the Euro 2024 final, where they lost to Spain.

    Ruben Dias (Manchester City)

The 27-year-old centre-back was a mainstay in Pep Guardiola's back line as Manchester City went on to retain their Premier League title, win the Club World Cup and reach the FA Cup final. The Portugal international made 45 appearances in all competitions before going on to help his national team reach the quarter-finals at Euro 2024.

    Phil Foden (Manchester City)

Foden had yet another spectacular season. He rattled in 19 Premier League goals and five in the Champions League to help City claim even more silverware, and earn himself a host of individual prizes. The 24-year-old England international also started all seven of the Three Lions' Euro 2024 games.

    Federico Valverde (Real Madrid)

Uruguayan midfielder Valverde was a vital servant as Real Madrid further solidified their place as the kings of Europe. He missed only one game in all competitions as Carlo Ancelotti's team won the double, while he captained Uruguay in their first four Copa America matches as they finished third in the competition.

Parish readying imminent Crystal Palace bid to sign new Pogba for Glasner

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish and the Eagles board are ready to back manager Oliver Glasner in the summer, and there is one player who's said to have really caught their eye already.

Glasner prepares for Newcastle after impressive Palace results

The Austrian's tenure got off to a mixed start, but in Palace's last two Premier League games, they've secured very impressive results.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 11, 2024

They're now more than 10 points clear of the relegation zone with five matches remaining, making them sure-fire candidates to avoid the drop barring a total disaster.

Palace's brilliant 1-0 win away to title-chasing Liverpool at Anfield preceded a fantastic 5-2 victory at home to West Ham, with Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze, Jean Philippe-Mateta's brace and an Emerson Palmieri own-goal rounded off their arguable display of the season over the weekend.

“You think about many situations that can happen in a game, with injuries or you have a red card down, so maybe you can change things. But I had no plan in my head when we were four goals up after 30 minutes," said Glasner after Palace's brilliant win over West Ham.

“That’s the best situation you can have, and I really enjoyed watching the players today, what kind of joy they had in possession, how they combined, and it was really amazing to watch them.

“You could feel it in the whole of Selhurst Park: the fans were happy, the players were happy, and that's how football should be. But it's also important to keep this focus high over 95 minutes – we conceded a goal where we were a little bit, let's say, comfortable, [not] defending the set-piece. We knew this was one of their biggest strengths, but when it was 4-0 up, we said: ‘yeah, wow, cool, nice’ – but you always have to show the basics.

“In the second-half we did it really well, we scored a nice goal, we could have scored two or three more, so then it happened with Dean [Henderson], but I think he saved us three or four goals at Liverpool, so today we can [forgive him]. Mistakes happen, but it was a great performance today."

While Glasner prepares for Newcastle, Parish is ready to back him in the summer. Palace are believed to be looking at defensive reinforcements, but also have targets for further forward and in midfield, like Club Brugge ace Raphael Onyedika.

Crystal Palace readying imminent bid for Onyedika

The 23-year-old Nigerian has been a mainstay for Brugge all season, and Palace watched him in action just last week as they take a real interest.

That is according to Africa Foot United, who also say that Palace are now "preparing an offer" for Onyedika and their proposal will come in the "coming days".

Interestingly, a separate report from Africa has branded him the "new [Paul] Pogba", following reports earlier this week that the Eagles hierarchy see him as one of Europe's brightest young talents and a priority signing if one or both of Michael Olise or Eberechi Eze leave.

Southampton struck gold selling gem who’s now worth less than Stephens

Southampton have some catching up to do if they stand any chance of breaking into the automatic promotion spots in the Championship, the Saints nine points off Leicester City in second place but with two games in hand next to their name.

Russell Martin will hope his South Coast outfit can fix their defensive leakiness in the crunch matches to come if they are to leap up the table, having conceded five goals in their last two league encounters before the International break.

Kyle Walker-Peters potentially being back and fit could help shore up the Saints for their home clash with Middlesbrough on Good Friday, with the second tier side missing their reliable right-back owing to injury in those two games.

Even with Southampton being charitable in defence as of late, they wouldn't turn back the clock to have this former £18m man back on their books with his transfer value tumbling ever since he waved goodbye to St Mary's in 2021.

Jannick Vestergaard's stats at Southampton

Jannick Vestergaard was once a fan's favourite on the South Coast, having made 79 appearances for the Saints in total and nodding in four goals in the process.

The £18m buy would be a colossus in his final season for Southampton, scoring three times as a towering 6 foot 6 centre-back including this excellent header against Tottenham Hotspur who once sniffed around for the Dane's services.

The ex-Saints man was even described as "outstanding" by Alan Shearer that same season, when discussing the best top-flight performers in December.

Leicester City would ultimately land the Scandivanian defender's signature at the end of that campaign, the Foxes signing the imposing defender for what looked like a bargain fee of £15m at the time.

Yet, it hasn't been all smooth sailing for the lofty defender since relocating.

Leicester defender Jannik Vestergaard.

A bumpy start at the King Power Stadium coincided in Brendan Rodgers refusing to play him, playing just ten Premier League games in his first season and none in his second under the now Celtic boss before his exit in the wake of relegation.

Vestergaard has managed to redeem himself under the short-lived tenure of Enzo Maresca so far, making 33 appearances for the Foxes as they aim for an immediate return to the top-flight, but it hasn't stopped his once substantial transfer value taking a hit to ease Southampton's pain about losing him.

Jannik Vestergaard's transfer value in 2024

According to Football Transfers, the 31-year-old defender now comes in at a far lesser worth of €1.7m (£1.4m) compared to his once hefty £18m price tag.

To further add context, this would make the Danish centre-back worth less than Jack Stephens in the current Southampton ranks who has received flak recently for his sub-standard displays, with journalist Felix Keith critical of Martin's decision to "shoe-horn" the captain into the side at left-back on occasion.

The long-standing Saints servant would win zero duels in his side's last game versus Sunderland, but still is judged to be worth €1.9m (£1.6m)

Southampton have also managed to replace Vestergaard with younger and fresher talents, with Manchester City loanee Taylor Harwood-Bellis – who is worth €12.5m (£10.7m) – excelling with flying colours this campaign at the back since joining on loan from the current reigning Premier League champions.

Alongside experience coming in the form of Jan Bednarek, who has been absent from just two league games in Martin's side since making the drop-down, Southampton should be able to return to more dogged displays in defence in the weeks to come away from shipping goals for fun.

Least valuable Southampton players – 2023/24

2. Alex McCarthy

3. Juan Larios

4. Jack Stephens

5. Joe Rothwell

If Vestergaard was still on the roster at Southampton, he would come in as the third least valuable player at St Mary's when scanning over the table above.

Although the 6 foot 6 former Saints man has managed to turn around his stuttering career, there's no lingering regret from Southampton's point of view anymore about how things ended.

Man Utd are right to want a new 100,000-capacity Old Trafford – but Sir Jim Ratcliffe & Co. – not UK taxpayers – must stump up the cash for 'Wembley of the North'

The Red Devils' plans to construct a world-class stadium should be celebrated – as long as the public does not end up footing the bill

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has only officially been the minority shareholder of Manchester United since February, but he and his INEOS partners have been in a real hurry to re-shape the club. They have appointed a new CEO, sporting director and technical director and revamped the training ground.

The most radical and significant step, however, is about to follow: the eventual demolition of Old Trafford and the building of a brand new, 100,000-capacity stadium in its place.

It is a bold move that breaks with tradition, and it will be gut-wrenching to see the club’s historic home razed to the ground. It will also cost the club dear, to the tune of around £2 billion ($2.5bn). It is the right move, though, and it is essential to ensure United move into the future and do not stay stuck in the past, living off former glories and trading in nostalgia.

Yet one thing should be clear: however ambitious the project is, Ratcliffe and the club should be the ones financing it, not the British taxpayer.

Getty ImagesLagging behind

Ratcliffe has talked a lot about the need to redevelop Old Trafford, and less than a month after officially completing his purchase of a 27 percent stake in the club, a task force was set up to determine the best course of action.

The group, chaired by London 2012 Olympics organiser Sebastian Coe and whose other members include Gary Neville as well as Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, have concluded that the building of a brand new stadium is the best course of action. There are many good reasons why.

First of all, Old Trafford right now is, at best, a large but faded stadium that pales in comparison to the modern arenas of rivals Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham, not to mention the futuristic Santiago Bernabeu, Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena and the proposed new Camp Nou. It has tiny scoreboards, which cannot be seen from large sections of the ground, no big screens and problems with acoustics.

The concourses are cramped, leading to long queues before kick-off and at half-time, and the selection of food and drinks is severely limited. Anyone who tries a pie risks burning their mouth with each bite, and the club’s food hygiene is rated at one star out of five after guests were served raw chicken at an event last year.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesFalling down

At worst, it is a stadium that is no longer fit for purpose. There are big problems of overcrowding before and after matches due to the sheer amount of pillars, leaving fans often feeling unsafe. Once in your seat, there is hardly any legroom, meaning adults of above-average height tend to scrape their knees on the back of the seat in front of them.

Then there is the infamous leaky roof, which left supporters utterly drenched during last season’s game against Arsenal and which led to the dressing room being flooded. Last season, away fans from Manchester City to Bournemouth revelled in the stories about the stadium’s decay, and the chant “Old Trafford is falling down” was heard at practically every match.

At the very least the stadium needs rebuilding, which would cost around £1.1bn ($1.4bn), almost half the amount of building a brand new ground. That option presents many logistical challenges, including building around an existing railway line.

Some parts of Old Trafford remain the same as they were when the stadium was first built in 1909, even surviving being bombed during the Second World War. And stadium insiders believe that many materials in the ground are reaching the end of their tether.

“The building is reaching the end of its natural life – the cabling, the electricity supplies, everything is nearing its sell by date. And the interiors are very cramped and difficult in places," Chris Lee, chief executive of the architectural firm Populous which United have hired to oversee the stadium project, told last year. “I would say updating is crucial not just to maintain the club’s position, but just to keep the place functional.”

Getty Huge ticket demand

Redeveloping the stadium would also mean severely reducing its capacity while building works go on, depriving the club of matchday revenue and meaning many match-going fans would be unable to see the team for several years. Building the new stadium next to Old Trafford, on land which the club already owns, would allow United to keep playing in front of 73,000 supporters at each game until the new stadium is built.

A brand new stadium means there will be no restrictions on what type of structure the club can build and there is scope to make it even bigger. The maximum capacity of a redeveloped Old Trafford would be 90,000, but a new stadium could hold up to 100,000. And that is what is needed to meet current demand for tickets. United have more than 330,000 paid-up members, more than any football team in the world, while there are over 120,000 people on the waiting list for season tickets.

The final argument for building a new stadium is the scope to redevelop the local area of Trafford, in the manner that Manchester City have revitalised the eastern part of the city. And that is where clear lines need to be drawn.

United want to establish a public-private partnership with the local council and even the British government, looking to the taxpayer to ease the burden of paying for the new project. And that cannot be allowed to happen.

Ratcliffe has been trying to drum up political support for this endeavour. New UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer visited Old Trafford in May for the game against Arsenal and, according to , he was open to conversations with Ratcliffe around building a public-private partnership with United around the new stadium. Ratcliffe has also been campaigning for government aid via the media, talking of his ambition for Old Trafford to become a “Wembley of the North”

"There's a very good case, in my view, for having a stadium of the North, which would serve the northern part of the country in that arena of football," he told in May. "If you look at the number of Champions League the North West has won, it's 10. London has won two.

"And yet everybody from the North has to get down to London to watch a big football match. And there should be one in the North, in my view.”

Wembley benefitted from public money when it was redeveloped in the 2000s, but there is no reason why United should get from public money for a similar project in the north. English football has one home already, it does not need another at public expense. And even if there is a case to have a northern home for football, why should United be the ones to benefit from it?

Sophie Molineux takes a break from WBBL for mental health reasons

Australia and Melbourne Renegades women’s allrounder Sophie Molineux has become the latest cricketer to step away from the game for mental health issues.Molineux has played all 10 of the Renegades WBBL games so far this season, as she was pushing to return to the national side ahead of the T20 World Cup. Arsenal join Man Utd in race for "really good" USMNT midfielder

As Arsenal battle to secure their first Premier League title in two decades, attention in the boardroom has already turned to the summer with the Gunners always on the hunt for potential new signings.

Arsenal need new midfield partners for Rice

Since arriving at the Emirates, Declan Rice has been nothing short of exceptional. The midfielder is one of just two Arsenal players to have started every Premier League game this season and has more than merited his £100million fee.

Arsenal players Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice

The issue for Mikel Arteta going forward will be finding the right players to go alongside the Englishman. With Martin Ødegaard's expertise lying further up the field and Kai Havertz moving back into his natural forward role, the focus of the summer will be to rebuild the Gunners' midfield.

Thomas Partey and Jorginho were both linked with moves away from North London in January and are likely to follow through with these exits in the summer. The former has suffered issues with injury this campaign, whilst his Italian teammate looks to have his heart set on a future beyond the Emirates.

With this in mind, it appears that Arsenal have joined a host of Premier League teams in a battle to secure the services of a proven player in the middle of the park.

Arsenal join race for USA midfielder

According to Sport Witness, reports out of Italy are suggesting that Arsenal are one of three Premier League sides interested in Juventus' Weston McKennie. The outlet claims that Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are also trying to bring the USA international to Germany, suggesting the emergence of a bidding war for the midfielder.

Fulham and Man United join the Gunners as the interested English parties, perhaps striking fear into the clubs' fan bases after the 25-year-old's terrible spell on loan at Leeds last season. Whilst McKennie's time in West Yorkshire was rightfully regarded as a flop after being relegated, his recent form in Italy this season has seen a resurgence for the midfielder.

McKennie has been a vital part of Juventus' hunt for European football however, with his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2025 there is a strong suggestion that he will be available for a cut-price this summer.

The 25-year-old's resiliance has been one of his strongest assets throughout his career with McKennie always able to bounce back from whatever is thrown at him. This feature of his character was noted by USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter who said of the midfielder:

“Weston said, ‘I’m going to dig in and I’m going to prove that I belong'. Not only does he belong, but he’s proven to be one of the best players of Juventus this year, and one of the top midfielders in Serie A".

"So, it shows his mentality chose his way as a person. It shows that he’s able to take these obstacles and continue on and keep performing. I think that’s a mark of a really good player.”

With Arsenal's clear need for depth in the middle of the park noted and McKennie seemingly available on the cheap, Gunners' fans should put aside previous poor form and view signing the American as a shrewd bit of business.

Five late wickets raises Middlesex hopes of inflicting Lancashire's first defeat of the season

Lancashire lead by 211 runs with two wickets in hand going into final day

ECB Reporters Network18-Sep-2019
Middlesex claimed five wickets in a rather dramatic evening session at Emirates Old Trafford as they sought to inflict a first Championship defeat on the soon-to-be crowned Division Two champions Lancashire.Having spent the first two days of this match recovering from 34 for 6 to make 337 in reply to the home side’s 259, Dawid Malan’s bowlers had restricted the home side to 289 for 8 when bad light ended play 11 overs early. That gives Lancashire a lead of only 211 and it all but completed a second fine fightback by Middlesex after a day the first two sessions of which had been dominated by the batsmen.Miguel Cummins ended the day with figures of 4 for 50 but Ethan Bamber took two vital wickets with the new ball while Lancashire’s best contribution was made by Keaton Jennings, who was dismissed for 97 for the second time this season when he chopped a ball from Nathan Sowter onto his leg stump. Jennings’ dismissal ended his 127-run stand with Liam Livingstone and was the first of five Lancashire wickets to fall in 13 overs as the home side declined from 253 for three to 282 for 8.In the morning session a career-best 34 by Saqib Mahmood had enabled Lancashire’s batsmen to wipe out their 78-run first-innings deficit during a relatively quiet two hours’ cricket. Mahmood hit five fours before he was caught behind when playing forward to Cummins but his was the only wicket lost on a pitch which seemed to be flattening out after a first day in which 16 wickets fell.Lancashire’s domination continued during the second session when the only batsman dismissed was Josh Bohannon, who was lbw to Toby Roland-Jones for 28, having helped Jennings put on 51 for the third wicket .When he was three short of what would have been his first Championship century of the season, Jennings fell to Sowter, a dismissal which changed the course of what is proving to be the best game of Championship cricket seen at Old Trafford this season.Bamber had Livingstone caught behind by Simpson two overs after taking the new ball and then trapped Lancashire skipper Dane Vilas leg before for only two in his next over. Rob Jones fell to Cummins for 16, caught in the gully by Sowter, and when Tom Bailey was pouched by Malan at second slip for only four, Lancashire were faced with the prospect of defending a fairly modest target on the final day if they wished to defend their unbeaten record in Championship cricket.
