BCCI allows two bouncers per over and changes Impact Player rule for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) – India’s domestic T20 tournament – will see three changes from the upcoming season: two bouncers allowed per over and minor tweaks to the Impact Player rule, which was trialled last season. Previously, the Impact Player could only be used before the 14th over of an innings in SMAT, but now the rule can be used at any time during the match, like it was in the IPL this year. The other tweak is that teams will now have to announce their playing XIs and four substitute players before the toss, unlike in the IPL where captains brought two team sheets for the coin flip and finalised the XI after the toss.Bowlers being allowed to deliver two bouncers in an over is “to balance the contest between bat and ball,” according to a BCCI release after its 19th Apex Council meeting held in Mumbai on Friday. The T20 tournament is scheduled to be held from October 16 to November 6 this year, after the Irani Cup and before the Vijay Hazare Trophy (50-over competition).Related

The Apex Council meeting also confirmed India’s participation at the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou in September, for both men’s and women’s teams. “Considering the overlap of schedule of the Asian Games with ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, BCCI will select from the players not participating in the World Cup to play in the Asian Games,” the release said. The BCCI also plans to formulate policies around the participation of Indian cricketers in overseas T20 competitions. Currently, only players retired from all forms of Indian cricket can feature in overseas leagues but recently there have been a string of retired cricketers who have opted to play overseas. There was also a two-pronged proposal to upgrade the stadiums in India. While the grounds hosting the ODI World Cup games will get immediate attention, rest of the venues will be upgraded in the second phase of the upgradation plan.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Onana made three errors leading to goals during the past Premier League season and an upgrade would certainly help Ruben Amorim as he looks to improve on their recent finish of 15th. Ter Stegen is expected to leave Camp Nou after Barcelona prioritised signing Joan Garcia from Espanyol and renewing Wojciech Szczesny's contract, but Chevalier's situation is a little more complicated. The 23-year-old is valued at €70 million (£59m) by Lille and still has another two years left to run on his contract, with the French side still optimistic of agreeing a new deal.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Chevalier is one of the most highly-rated goalkeepers in Ligue 1, though he is yet to make his senior debut for France. He kept 11 league clean sheets in 2024-25, helping Lille finish fifth.

CA allows BBL clubs to sign players outside their salary cap

Cricket Australia will allow Big Bash clubs to sign nationally-contracted players outside of their salary cap in a bid to avoid the Steven Smith fiascos of the past two seasons.Under rules unveiled by CA on Wednesday, players will be able to sign with individual clubs on a marquee supplementary list if they are not expected to be available to play.Should the player’s circumstances change, they will then be able to be brought into the BBL’s club’s full-time roster to feature in matches. The rules come as part of a raft of contracting changes for the men’s and women’s BBL, including the introduction of an overseas player draft in the WBBL in the same model as the men’s tournament. The highest-paid overseas men’s player will command AU$420,000 in the draft, while the female counterparts will collect AU$110,000 in a major boost to the pulling power of the competitions.Clubs will also have to pay their top-six men’s earners a minimum of AU$200,000 each, and top-five female players AU$50,000 each. But the biggest change will come with nationally-contracted men’s stars.Franchises will be able to contract as many as they like inside the AU$3 million salary cap for their regular 18-man roster, as well as two additional players outside of the cap. Those players would be on a standardised AU$50,000 deal.If they end up playing, only then will their AU$50,000 deal and AU$30,000 match fees count to the cap. If the player’s availability comes through unforeseen circumstances, CA will also allow clubs to bring money out of the following season’s cap to fit them in.That would likely only be activated for any player who has been dropped from Australian duties, or if international fixtures were to change. The new rule would cover both of the Smith scenarios in the past two years, where Covid-19 caused the cancellation of a series in early 2022 and home ODIs earlier this year.Smith was unable to play for the Sixers in 2021-22 as he was not signed with them, while he and David Warner were handed marketing contracts last summer to play for the Sixers and Sydney Thunder, respectively. The new system would also allow the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins to be aligned with clubs and appear in marketing material, with the quicks traditionally sitting out the BBL to manage workloads.CA hopes the changes open the door to more big-name talent playing, while allowing clubs to not have roster spots and significant cap space taken up by unavailable players with Tests in January this summer.”It’s always our ambition for as many of those players to be part of the BBL as possible,” Big Bash boss Alistair Dobson said. “We hope that the mechanisms will enable clubs to sign players even if they are either unlikely or not available. Because having them around the BBL and ready if available, is a really important part of the competition for us.”

West Ham now keen on summer move for "exceptional" £15m Premier League ace

West Ham United are now keen on a summer move for an “exceptional” Premier League player, who could be available for a fee of around £15m, according to a report.

West Ham chasing new defenders

Signing a striker may be the first port of call for Graham Potter this summer, with Lille’s Jonathan David recently being identified as the manager’s top target, but the manager is also interested in refreshing his defensive options.

Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga is one of the players on the shortlist, having emerged as a key player for the Lions in the Championship this season, although it remains to be seen whether West Ham will be able to lure him away from a rival club.

Tanganga has Premier League experience from his time with Tottenham Hotspur, and there are now suggestions the Hammers could also be eyeing a player who is currently plying his trade in the top flight.

According to a report from The Sun, the Irons are keen on a move for Southampton centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who could be keen on a move away from his current club this summer, with the Saints looking extremely likely to drop to the Championship.

Harwood-Bellis has recently changed agent, which can indicate a player is set to pursue a move, and Southampton would be likely to demand a fee of around £15m, which would make him an affordable option for West Ham, who are keen on new additions at the back.

Harwood-Bellis impressing for club and country

It has been a far from ideal season for the Saints, who look set to be relegated from the Premier League, but the 23-year-old has been one of the only shining lights in a poor side, ranking among their most consistent performers.

The Englishman’s form earlier this season earned him a Three Lions call-up, and he certainly made the most of the opportunity, scoring the fifth goal in a 5-0 battering of the Republic of Ireland.

The former Manchester City man has been a consistent goal threat over the past year, ranking in the 85th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90, while his defensive ability has also been on display, placing in the 99th percentile for blocks, when compared to his positional peers.

The Southampton ace has also been lauded as “exceptional” by members of the media in the past, and his performances this season indicate he definitely deserves another chance in the Premier League.

As such, West Ham should pursue a deal for Harwood-Bellis this summer, particularly considering a £15m asking price is very reasonable, and the Saints are set to be in a weak negotiating position if they drop back down to the Championship.

Chelsea now willing to make huge bid to sign star with £833m release clause

Chelsea are now willing to make a huge bid to sign a “world-class” player despite him having a release clause of £833m, according to a report.

Blues set to spend big this summer

The Blues have overhauled their squad over the past few years, spending vast sums of money in the process, but they are showing no signs of slowing down, with several expensive targets on their shortlist ahead of the summer transfer window.

One such player is Brighton & Hove Albion winger Kaoru Mitoma, with the west Londoners now prepared to make a £75m bid for the Japan international, having been impressed by his performances this season.

Not only that, but an approach has been made over Barcelona gem Marc Casado, who has a £83m release clause in his contract, with the same report detailing that January target, Mancheser United’s Kobbie Mainoo, could cost £80m at the end of the campaign.

Chelsea battling Arsenal for "skilful" forward with a £17m release clause

ByDominic Lund Feb 16, 2025

Casado is not the only Barca player of interest to Chelsea, however, with a report from Spain stating they would be willing to pay €100m (£83m) for Jules Kounde, indicating just how highly the right-back is thought of at Stamford Bridge.

However, Kounde is said to be very happy at the Camp Nou, with the La Liga side set to offer him a new contract over the next few weeks, in light of some impressive performances this season, which have impressed Hansi Flick.

As such, it may be very difficult for the Blues to get a deal done, and the fact the Frenchman has a €1bn (£833m) release clause in his contract will not help matters.

Kounde proving himself as "world-class"

It is no wonder Enzo Maresca’s side are so keen on signing the defender, given that his performances for Barcelona have been lauded as “world-class” by members of the media.

However, the Spanish side are in a very strong negotiating position, given that the 26-year-old is happy at the Camp Nou, and he is protected by an astronomical release clause.

FC Barcelona's JulesKoundein action

The France international has proven himself to be a top attacking full-back this season, picking up three goals and seven assists in 36 appearances in all competitions, indicating he could be a great acquisition for the Blues if he doesn’t agree a new contract.

That said, there are doubts over whether Kounde would be a necessary signing, given that Maresca is already well-stocked in the right-back department, with the likes of Reece James and Malo Gusto at his disposal.

Of course, there are always question marks about James’ fitness, but the Chelsea captain can be “fantastic” when fully-fit, while Gusto’s stellar performances this season have attracted the attention of Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

Club looking to sign 6 foot 2 Leeds player who 49ers have only just signed

It’s been a quiet transfer window for Leeds United so far, but that could be about to change as a club in France are hoping to sign one man who has just arrived at Elland Road, according to a new report.

Leeds United transfer news

The January transfer window is always a hard month to complete transfers, and with Daniel Farke stating earlier on he wasn’t a fan of this window, it is no surprise to see that the Whites have yet to conduct any transfer business.

Farke eyeing big January signing in "tremendous" Rutter repeat for Leeds

Leeds United appear to be targeting reinforcements all over the pitch this January.

1 ByEthan Lamb Jan 16, 2025

However, there are still over two weeks remaining before it closes, and therefore, plans could change, as Leeds may be forced to enter the transfer market if they lose players.

The Championship leaders are being linked with potential new arrivals, as it was reported earlier this week that Leeds scouts watched Bali Mumba in action for Plymouth Argyle in their FA Cup win over Brentford. The defender is a player Farke knows well, having worked together at Norwich City.

Meanwhile, a report also emerged on Wednesday claiming Leeds have made a 4 million euro offer to sign Dje Davilla from Portuguese side Leiria. That is reportedly the figure the club are wanting to get for the midfielder, but a deal looks very complicated to complete, as the player needs to get a work permit. As well as Leeds, there are also other teams showing a strong interest in Davilla.

French club hoping to sign Leeds midfielder

As the Whites look at potential new arrivals, there could be an exit on the horizon as Jeunes Footeux reports that Paris FC are interested in signing Josuha Guilavogui from Leeds.

Guilavogui, who only joined the Whites in October as a free agent, has emerged on the radar of the Ligue 2 side. Paris’ interest in the 34-year-old is considered “ambitious”, but Paris are looking to get into Ligue 1 by the end of this campaign and could see the midfielder as someone who can help achieve that.

The Frenchman signed a contract until the end of this campaign at Elland Road and has so far played 10 times for the Whites; only one has come from the start, and that was in the recent FA Cup game against Harrogate Town. Guilavogui was brought in by Farke to bolster his midfield options, as at the time Leeds had an injury crisis and were left short in that area of the pitch.

Guilavogui has had a small role to play so far, but given there is still plenty left to go in the Championship, Farke may want to keep hold of a 6 foot 2 physically imposing midfielder, as his versatility makes him a key man to have around the squad in case the Whites suffer injuries or suspensions.

Chapman 101*, Mitchell 74* help New Zealand ace 307-run chase

Leask, Cross fifties go in vain as visitors race home with 25 balls to spare

Sam Dalling31-Jul-2022

Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell added an unbroken 175 runs for the fourth wicket•BCCI

The last time Mark Chapman scored an ODI century was 2449 days ago. It came on his Hong Kong debut, having just completed both his exams and a 20-hour flight.A second came in the late-Sunday Edinburgh sunshine. Chapman’s century was his first in New Zealand colours, adding to the 83 he made in Friday’s T20I. It was an attractive, brutal knock, and as he reached the landmark off his 74th ball to point for a single, off came the helmet, and the bat swooshed through the air. Two balls later, a seven-wicket victory was sealed in the one-off ODI against Scotland.”I managed to score a few a couple of days ago, and I was happy to contribute again today,” he said after the match. “When Daryl (Mitchell) and I came together we had a lot of work to do. We talked about taking it deep, putting a partnership together and having wickets in hand come the end.”Daryl was encouraging me to go for it, and I just put my head down and tried to make contact. I’m stoked. Thankfully it came off today.”The problem, for the opposition at least, is that New Zealand are just so difficult to beat. Even when you think you’ve got them, they fight back. Chapman’s unbroken fourth-wicket partnership with Daryl Mitchell was worth 175 runs. The pair negotiated a potentially sticky situation with ease.Chapman took a particular shine to Hamza Tahir, who was peppered straight. Three sixes in an over towards the conclusion eased him through the 70s. He was dropped by Michael Leask in the middle of those, mind.Mitchell’s knock, on the other hand, contained a share of luck. Luck that largely evaded the Scots. But he is having a golden European tour, and there were touches of quality aplenty. It meant a tenth consecutive ODI victory for the Black Caps. And this, remember, is a line-up without Devon Conway, Kane Williamson and Tom Latham. The win did not come without wobbly moments, though. Scotland will take much from the game, if not victory. Dreich is a popular Scottish adjective meaning grey and dreary. It was apt for the early morning weather. And when Scotland slipped to 107 for 5 having elected to bat first in this one-off match, it looked apt for their day.But then out came Leask. By mid-afternoon, the sun shone, Leask had walloped a rapid 85 – his highest score in this format – and his quickfire dismissals of Martin Guptill and Dane Cleaver had New Zealand up against it. For a while at least, it seemed game on.Michael Leask scored a rapid 85 off just 55 balls•SNS Group/Getty Images

“It’s a week of missed opportunities,” Scotland head coach Shane Burger said. “We lost the big moments in the game, but ultimately, they go your way if you play more cricket. That one big partnership was the difference in the game.”I can’t fault the effort; the guys ran in and did the best we could. Our skill levels need to keep improving. It’s still building blocks but to see the resilience and the character shine out speaks 1,000 words.”Scotland had made a sprightly start with Kyle Coetzer racing to 20 from just 12 balls. But a miscued pull off Jacob Duffy brought about his downfall. Then came the New Zealand pressure. Michael Bracewell reeled off ten uninterrupted overs. Six overs between him and Blair Tickner cost just 11 runs, with Michael Jones falling to Bracewell, and Calum MacLeod to the latter. Bracewell then removed both Richie Berrington and Chris Greaves to leave Scotland reeling. Then came the counter punch. Finally, some home batting that mirrored the aggression of the in-house DJ’s excessive use of musical interludes. Matthew Cross reached 50 first with an emphatic pull off Lockie Ferguson that fizzed onto a neighbouring road. But Leask’s knock was the standout. Pure aggression. Bracewell was bludgeoned straight, before Ferguson – from around the wicket – dropped short and was swatted away. A later flat bat down the ground had Duffy sprinting. ‘You’ll nay catch that big lad’ came the cry from the hospitality tents. It was spot on. Leask then lifted Duffy over deep square and long on before falling 15 short of a century. Later, Mark Watt and Safyaan Sharif cameos took Scotland to 306.The hosts needed early luck but did not get it. Chris Sole was almost celebrating an immediate wicket, with Finn Allen edging just out of Cross’ reach. Shariff then thudded into Guptill’s pads, the ball struck the stumps, but the bails remained intact.Allen fell for exactly 50, Guptill 47 and then Cleaver soon after. But Chapman and Mitchell steadied before accelerating. Chapman boshed Tahir for a pair of maximums, Mitchell took ten off a Sharif over, and between them, they found 14 off Watt. Suddenly a run-a-ball was required. In the end, 25 balls were left spare.Quite what long-term value these games have for Scotland, when played in such isolation, is difficult to measure. This was their first ODI against a full-member nation since Sri Lanka visited in 2019. There is nothing currently in the fixture list. With the schedule packed, quite where additional games come from is difficult to see. In which case, it is ‘survive’ rather than ‘thrive.’

Rashid Khan and Kieron Pollard sign up for BBL draft

Rashid Khan has been confirmed in the new BBL draft for overseas players and will be joined by former West Indies captain Kieron Pollard who leads the way in overall T20 appearances. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, Pollard is among a sizeable contingent of West Indies names in the latest group of players to sign up for the draft and is joined by the all-time T20 wicket-taker Dwayne Bravo.Rashid is one of the household names of the BBL, having spent five seasons with Adelaide Strikers, so much so that the retention pick process within the draft has been dubbed the “Rashid Khan rule” and allows a club to retain a player they had last season if they are taken in the draft by a rival side.Related
