O título carioca do Botafogo teve repercussão mundial.

It has been another season of misery for Chelsea this year, as new boss Mauricio Pochettino has overseen a terrible campaign that, at the midway point, sees them tenth in the Premier League, miles off of Champions League qualification and 1-0 down heading into the second leg of their League Cup semi-final.
Aside from Cole Palmer, the summer signings have been massively disappointing, and former Villarreal striker Nicolas Jackson has been perhaps the most underwhelming of all.
Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling.
The Senegalese forward has been incredibly wasteful in front of goal, which has not helped the side's creative players like Raheem Sterling, although the latest name touted for a move to Stamford Bridge could supercharge the Englishman's numbers with his clinical finishing: Napoli's Victor Osimhen.
Chelsea transfer news – Victor Osimhen
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are on the lookout for a new striker in 2024, and they have a 'strong interest' in Napoli's free-scoring number nine, Osimhen.
The bad news for the Blues is that they will have to cough up a lot of money if they want to sign the Nigerian this year, as the English publication has revealed that he has a £103m release clause in his contract.
Napoli star Victor Osimhen
However, the good news is that according to the report, the former LOSC Lille striker is 'open to joining the Blues', which is quite an essential thing to know before starting any negotiations.
While it will be an expensive deal to thrash out for Todd Boehly and Co, the team's need for an out-and-out goalscorer makes it one they must complete – and it should supercharge Sterling's creative numbers.
Victor Osimhen could supercharge Raheem Sterling
The former Manchester City ace is an incredibly experienced professional, one with a genuinely impressive back-catalogue of performances, but his time at Stamford Bridge has been rather underwhelming – to put it lightly – having scored just 16 goals in 61 games, albeit while also providing ten assists.
Chelsea could sign Jackson upgrade in £100m ace who's like "Aguero & Falcao"
The 26-year-old would become the first name on the team sheet.
ByJack Salveson Holmes Jan 11, 2024
He hasn't been terrible, not by any stretch of the imagination, but he just hasn't been as effective as Chelsea fans might've hoped he'd be, and while some of that will be down to him, the lacklustre players around him are clearly not helping.
For example, Jackson has been outrageously profligate in the league this year, and while his seven goals may look impressive on the surface – three of them did come against a nine-man Tottenham Hotspur side, mind – the fact that he has an expected goals figure of 10.6 proves that he is about as far from a natural finisher as you'll find in the top-flight.
In comparison, Osimhen has scored his seven league goals from an expected goals figure of just 6.7, meaning that on average, he is scoring more goals than you would expect from the sort of chances he is getting, proving just how lethal he is and making the claim that he's "even better than Haaland" from Italian agent Andrea D'Amico a little easier to understand.
So, if Sterling were playing alongside the Nigerian "hitman", as dubbed by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, he could reasonably expect his creative numbers to skyrocket from their current – already fairly reasonable – level, as not only would the Napoli icon finish the great chances he was given, he would also be able to turn the half-chances into goals – thus increasing the Englishman's number of assists.

At the end of the day, while this would be an incredibly expensive deal to complete and Jackson could eventually come good, the state that Chelsea currently finds themselves necessitates such a transfer, and while the fans would be understandably thrilled with Osimhen's arrival, Sterling would surely be just as excited.
Wolverhampton Wanderers will want to get back to winning ways on Christmas Eve when Chelsea travel to Molineux, Gary O'Neil's side losing to West Ham United 3-0 last time out despite registering more shots on the day than David Moyes' arguably fortunate hosts.
The disappointing nature of this defeat could see the Wolves manager assess and scrutinise his squad over the Christmas fixtures to come, wanting to see more from a number of underperforming individuals before making a call in January over who he should recruit and bring into Molineux.
The Old Gold could add this long-term target to their squad finally when the transfer window reopens, keeping the likes of Joao Gomes on their toes in midfield in the process.
Wolves transfer latest – Premier League midfielder rumoured
A report from the Mirror earlier this month disclosed that Wolves will go full steam ahead in their pursuit of Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill this January, who is yet to sign a new contract with Vincent Kompany's Clarets.
That could result in Wolves swooping in to secure the central midfielder for just £7m, with interest also coming in the form of Crystal Palace, Fulham and Leicester City who all want to land the 28-year-old at the expense of O'Neil's side.
Kompany did fire back at these rumours, stating rather strongly that "they are rumours that I can not even entertain" when speaking to The Burnley Express recently. Still, Brownhill could have his head swayed by a potential move to Molineux.
This isn't the first time Brownhill has been linked with a move away from Turf Moor, rumoured to be joining Aston Villa back in 2021 with football pundit and ex-Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie calling the midfielder "fabulous" at the time and likening him to John McGinn when speaking to FootballFanCast.
The experienced midfielder could even displace Gomes on his potential arrival to the West Midlands in O'Neil's first team, Wolves' number 35 needing to impress his manager in the games to close out December or face the chop with or without Brownhill joining.
How Josh Brownhill compares to Joao Gomes
Gomes has put in a number of unsatisfactory displays in the middle of the park for the top-flight club this campaign, resulting in the Brazilian averaging a second-rate 6.69 Sofascore rating from 15 games to date.
In contrast, Brownhill has been a shining light for the relegation-threatened Clarets and has averaged a superior 7.06 rating from 16 games – scoring three times this season to chip in and do his part.
Josh Brownhill in action for Burnley.
Gomes was noticeably way off the pace against Brownhill's side at Molineux at the start of the month, inaccurate with his only long ball attempt of the game in a quiet showing from the reserved midfielder.
Whereas, Brownhill excels venturing forward and helping out in attack – Wolves in dire need of a midfield presence who is urgent and energetic on the ball, alongside being adept at scoring from long-range ever since Ruben Neves left in the summer.
O'Neil could finally replace Neves in Wolves swoop for £7m ace
Wolves are showing interest in a current Premier League midfielder…
ByRoss Kilvington Dec 11, 2023
Away at Molineux, despite exiting the field of play on the losing team, Burnley's number eight was head and shoulders above his uninspiring counterpart – attempting to catch the visitors out with two efforts on goal, winning all four of his aerial duels with determination too.
Looking at FBRef, Brownhill would be a smart acquisition on Wolves' end – the statistics show that his bright performance in the West Midlands against O'Neil's men is indicative of his full campaign with Gomes falling short in comparison.
Over the last year, per 90 minutes, Brownhill has amassed 2.85 shot-creating actions compared to Gomes' lacklustre 2.03.
On top of that, Brownhill is far more impressive as a combative and disruptive presence in midfield than Gomes also.
Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.
Gomes comes in at just 0.66 interceptions, whilst his Clarets equivalent has a far more impressive 1.61 on average – the Brazilian coming up short in the statistics you'd want a midfielder to excel in, bailed out by the bravery and creativity of midfield partner Mario Lemina.
The 22-year-old's cemented spot in the Wolves first team could well be up for grabs therefore, with O'Neil desperate to sign Brownhill to enhance his midfield and propel the Old Gold to new heights.

Pulisic surprised by Serie A's quality
Milan move a 'great test' for him
USMNT ace finds his confidence again
WHAT HAPPENED?
The USMNT international swapped Premier League side Chelsea for Milan last July in a relatively modest £17 million ($21.15m)move. Since then, he has had his most successful season to date, scoring 13 goals and bagging eight assists in 45 appearances – 39 of which have been starts. Now, the 25-year-old has spoken about how Italian football has been a "great test" for him and how playing for the Rossoneri has helped his game.

WHAT CHRISTIAN PULISIC SAID
He told ESPN: "I’ve actually been surprised with how difficult a lot of the games are in this league. I think it’s been a great test for me.
“I think a lot of that [success] comes down to just being given the opportunities here. I’ve had a lot of time on the field to show what I can do and have been given a creative role and a lot of freedom as well at times, which has been a huge part of getting that self-belief back and growing that confidence.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
There was quite a bit of fanfare and excitement when Chelsea signed Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund in 2019 for £58 million ($72m) but the fact he left for less than three times that amount shows something went wrong for him at Stamford Bridge. While some will claim Serie A is of a lesser quality to the Premier League, Pulisic is clearly thrilled to be at Milan and playing regular football again.

Pulisic's Milan side, who sit second in Serie A behind newly-crowned champions and bitter rivals Inter, are away to Juventus on Saturday evening as they seek to bounce back from a damaging derby defeat.
Liverpool are believed to be ahead of Premier League rivals Manchester City in the race to sign a world-renowned player who is "perfect" for them.
Liverpool want January signings
The Reds put all of their focus on rebuilding their midfield during the summer transfer window, and it has paid dividends greatly, with the likes of Dominic Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister catching the eye.
It could now be that Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his defence and attack next, with figures such as Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah not getting any younger. Sporting CP centre-back Goncalo Inacio continues to be linked with a move to Liverpool, for example, while Leroy Sane has been seen as a Reds transfer target in recent weeks, too.

Now, another transfer update has dropped over Liverpool's potential future business, with the January window edging closer all the time.
Liverpool receive Leroy Sane boost
Speaking to Caught Offside, journalist Christian Falk claimed that Liverpool now appear to have the edge over Man City for the signing of Sane, with the German, labelled as "perfect" for the Reds, not keen on returning to the Etihad in a boost for those at Anfield.
samuel-iling-junior-leroy-sane-tottenham-opinion
"The big question around Leroy has always been about his mentality. This was a big discussion with Pep Guardiola. Speaking of which, there were rumours around Manchester City also being interested in the player – I heard this was an option, but I also heard that Sane doesn’t want to go back there.
"Jurgen Klopp is a coach who can get his players to buy into the work rate you need at Liverpool. This would be an intelligent move for Liverpool to get Sane, as he has everything; if you can add a working mentality to this (which Jurgen Klopp can perhaps give him), he would be perfect for Liverpool.
"Leroy Sane made a huge development at Bayern Munich regarding his work rate in recent years, tracking back in addition to his offensive output. Now you see why he’s so good now, as he’s also doing this job."
There is no question that Sane is an elite-level footballer whose natural ability has stood out so much down the years, shining for both City and Bayern Munich with his brilliance out wide. The 27-year-old Liverpool target has also scored 13 goals in 59 caps for Germany, showing that he can be a force at international level, and his ability to play on either flank makes him a nightmare to play against for defenders.

That being said, Sane turns 28 next year and may not remain at the peak of his powers for too much longer, and given the amount of money that the Reds may have to spend on him, they could be wise to bring in a younger alternative. The Germany ace also hasn't been without controversy down the years, following an incident with former Liverpool hero Sadio Mane when both were at Bayern together, but it could still be a move to keep an eye on.
Newcastle United will be tracking potential midfield signings ahead of the January transfer window, and an interesting update has now dropped over which players could come in.
Newcastle transfer news
It would be a big surprise if the Magpies decided not to delve into the transfer market once the window reopens soon, considering the void that has now been left in the middle of the park for one key reason. Sandro Tonali has been banned from playing competitive football for 10 months, meaning his 2023/23 season is over, and it means Newcastle have lost the services of their most exciting summer signing.
The Italian's suspension also means that Eddie Howe's midfield will be weakened until January, and recent results have even suggested that the Tonali situation has affected the focus of the team, although it may simply be a coincidence, with Borussia Dortmund and Wolves both tricky opponents. Away from the pitch, those in charge of transfers will be working hard on finding an ideal replacement for Tonali to arrive in January, allowing the midfield to remain a force for the remainder of the campaign.
Newcastle eyeing Saudi signings
According to a new transfer update from TEAMtalk journalist Graeme Bailey, Newcastle could look to sign a Saudi Pro League midfielder in January, with PIF "willing to green-light deals" between the Magpies and the much-talked-about league:
"PIF have made it clear to Newcastle United’s hierarchy that they are willing to green-light deals between them and the Saudi Pro League in January."
Bailey added: "PIF have now confirmed the option of bringing players from the Pro League – where they own the four biggest clubs – Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr, Al-Ahli and Al-Hilal – is something being looked at. TT understands that Ruben Neves is a player that is highly thought of at St James’ Park – as is Spaniard Gabri Veiga. That aside there are also the likes of N’Golo Kante, Marcelo Brozovic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
"A source confirmed: 'The option of getting players on-loan from the Pro-League is something that has been discussed. It is possibly the best option – given we are talking about players already owned by PIF. However, all options are being considered and the club are looking at players from England and beyond, nothing has been decided yet.'"
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.
It may not be ideal for Newcastle to be targeting Saudi Pro League players, due to it arguably being far less competitive than the Premier League, meaning anyone who does come in could be off the pace to begin with.

That being said, there are footballers of real quality playing in the league – individuals who appear to be at their peak, such as Neves and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic – so there are clear options there who could help Newcastle forget about Tonali between January and the beginning of next season.
It could be argued that Manchester City ace Kalvin Phillips could actually be the best option to bring in, considering he is playing in the Premier League and could come straight in as a key man from the off, but given the PIF's links with Saudi Arabia, it is understandable why Pro League players are being strongly looked at.
Former Man United defender Rio Ferdinand has lavished praise on a Tottenham Hotspur "kid" who he says is the "real deal".
Spurs form under Ange Postecoglou
The north Londoners' transformation under Ange Postecoglou has blown away on-lookers, with many not anticipating this electric early run of form without club-record goalscorer Harry Kane. Spurs' former star striker departed for Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window, in what was seen as a huge blow, but the Lilywhites haven't looked back since.
Indeed, Postecoglou has made the best start to a season out of any new manager in Premier League history; winning eight out of a possible 10 league games while remaining unbeaten in that time. The Australian has already won two-consecutive Manager of the Month awards and all the signs suggest Tottenham may be a shoo-in for Champions League qualification, if they can maintain this upward trajectory.
Spurs take on Chelsea in home turf next Monday, with Postecoglou having a real chance to inflict yet more early-season pain on ex-Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochetttino. The club also have a few players to thank for their brilliant run, with both James Maddison and Son Heung-min proving deadly in the forward areas.
Colossal centre-back pairing Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are also shining at the heart of Postecoglou's defence, with former Spurs striker Mido praising van de Ven after his quick adaptation to English football.
"I understand the idea of Ange [Postecoglou] that he wants a left-footed centre-back to start from the back and to have a better angle to see the whole of the pitch playing the ball between the lines and the diagonals," said the Egyptian to talkSPORT.
"But defensively, I was really worried that this guy would struggle in the Premier League. I know in the Premier League that you always play against big guys up front and the likes of [Erling] Haaland and [Ivan] Toney, all the big guys, it’s very difficult to defend. It’s not like the Dutch league, it’s different, it could be a shock for him. But to be honest to the lad, he’s been brilliant."
Rio Ferdinand praises "real deal" van de Ven
The Netherlands international has taken to life in the Premier League with real aplomb, a fact not lost on ex-England star Ferdinand, who showered more praise on van de Ven following his excellent start to life and understanding with Romero.

“Romero and Micky van de Ven are arguably the best pairing at the moment in central defence in the Premier League on form. They’ve been immense,” said Ferdinand on van de Ven to his YouTube channel.
“This Micky van de Ven, bro, he is the real deal. He’s the real deal. I saw his debut the other day for Holland. I’ve seen him right up close twice this season. And he looks supremely comfortable for a young centre-back that’s come into a new league. So watch this space for this kid.”

The 22-year-old has started every league game for Spurs so far this season, and if he continues like this, won't be dropped any time soon.
Dimuth Karunaratne’s outstanding run over the past 18 months is down largely to his experience. So said Angelo Mathews, of a batsman he has known since high school. He and Karunaratne played together for St. Joseph’s College in Colombo, for a team in which Mathews was the star captain. But Mathews, like everyone else, has been lavishly outscored by Karunaratne in bowler-friendly series.Karunaratne’s aggregate across the two Tests is 356 – 195 runs more than the next highest-scorer. He has also passed 50 in each of his four innings, and is the only centurion so far, having made 158 not out in the first innings in Galle.”With experience you improve, and you learn from your mistakes,” Mathews said. “We all can see that Dimuth is not repeating his mistakes. That is the quality a batsman should have. I have been with him since school. I know him in and out and he is a strong character. He doesn’t easily give up.”Although Karunaratne was an inconsistent performer in the first few years of his career, he has seemingly matured into a more reliably run-producer since the start of 2017. He had scored over 1000 runs in the last calendar year, in which he hit centuries against Bangladesh and India, as well as making 196 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi – an innings that set up victory in that game. Now, in 2018, he averages 65.15 after four Tests.”The way he has batted in the last year or so has been brilliant,” Mathews said. “He was outstanding in UAE when he got those huge runs in both games. Once again, here, he showed that on difficult wickets he can score runs. If you all recall, on a difficult wicket against India at the SSC last year, he scored a hundred as well. He has added a lot of stability into our line-up.”What Karunaratne has done well on the spin-friendly pitches in this series, is search out scoring opportunities, Mathews said. “You always can get a good ball on these wickets. You can’t wait for the good ball. On these tracks, you’ve got to score runs, and keep rotating the strike so that it gets easier. That’s what Dimuth has done.”Although Karunaratne has helped set up the series whitewash, Sri Lanka require five more wickets to close out the second Test.”Beating the No. 2 team in the world is something special, and it’s going to be a huge achievement for us as we’re an inexperienced side,” Mathews said. “We will enjoy that. But we have a job at hand tomorrow morning. The first couple of wickets are going to be crucial. If we can knock off a couple early then we can enjoy the victory.”
