The BCCI has nominated Rohit Sharma for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honour. The board has also nominated India fast bowler Ishant Sharma, opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan and India woman allrounder Deepti Sharma for the Arjuna Award.Rohit’s Khel Ratna nomination comes on the back of an outstanding 2019 with the bat: 556 runs at an average of 92.66 in five Test matches, all while opening the batting for the first time; and 1657 ODI runs at 57.30, including the unprecedented feat of five centuries at a single World Cup.If Rohit wins the award, he will become only the fourth cricketer, after Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, to do so.”We went through a lot of data and considered various parameters before shortlisting the nominees,” Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president, said via a media release. “Rohit Sharma has set new benchmarks as a batsman and achieved scores people thought were not possible in the shorter formats of the game. We feel he is worthy of getting the prestigious Khel Ratna Award for his commitment, conduct, consistency and his leadership skills.”Ishant Sharma is the most senior member of the Test squad and his contribution has been vital in Indian team’s long run as the No. 1 Test side. Fast bowlers are prone to injuries and Ishant has had a fair share of them but he has fought hard to be back on the park every time. Shikhar has been consistently scoring at the top and his performances in the ICC events have been significant. Deepti is a genuine allrounder and her contribution to the team has been vital.”

'Tried everything' – Liverpool boss Arne Slot addresses failed Martin Zubimendi transfer pursuit after midfielder rejects Anfield move

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has addressed the Reds' failed pursuit of Spain and Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi this summer.

Liverpool have been looking to sign a pivot this summer as they look to challenge Arsenal and Manchester City for the Premier League title after falling just short last season. Their major target for the summer had been Real Sociedad's Zubimendi as the Spain international impressed the Reds' top brass after his performances in the Euro 2024 final against England.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Earlier this week, Zubimendi announced his decision to stay at Real Sociedad which came as a major blow to Liverpool's hopes of adding the 25-year-old to their midfield this summer, as they remain the only Premier League team to have not made a transfer this summer so far. Slot has now addressed the failed transfer move and also talked about the lack of new signings this summer.

IMAGOWHAT SLOT SAID

Speaking to the media ahead of their Premier League opener, Slot said: "I said many times already our squad is really strong so it is not easy to find players to strengthen. Zubimendi was one but he chose not to come here so we go forward with the ones we have. We're in a good place and Richard is trying to improve the squad in the background. Zubimendi didn't want to come and Richard tried everything. We kept the same team but lost Thiago, Joel and Adrian and you always talk about transfers but we have a positive team already."

The Liverpool boss also talked about the lack of transfers this summer, he said: "That argument I don't understand. If you don't strengthen you become weaker? We stay the same. I truly believe you can help on the training ground and improve. It has helped players to improve here. If other clubs strengthen they become better but it's not always true that new players make you stronger. Every player in the team needs perspective on playing time. If you keep bringing in players the energy goes down. Me and Richard are trying to strengthen, if we think we have found someone, we try to bring him. Unfortunately, the one we found (Zubimendi) said no."

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

Fourth Rangers player racing to be fit after trio ruled out of Celtic start

Games don't get much bigger than Rangers' Old Firm derby clash with Celtic this weekend, which has only worsened the injury blow that Philippe Clement could be dealt late on.

Rangers injury news

Early reports have indicated that Ross McCausland, Abdallah Sima and Dujon Sterling will all be forced to settle for a place on the bench against Celtic, with none of the trio fit to start. Sima would have been the biggest boost of the lot, having been on the sidelines since AFCON earlier this year. But now Clement will only have the chance to deploy his star man from the bench in his side's biggest game of the season.

Rangers winger Abdallah Sima.

Win, and the Gers will be two points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership with a game in hand potentially allowing them to cruise towards the title in the next few weeks. It would signal quite the title comeback from those at Ibrox, given that they looked almost down and out when Clement first arrived in place of the sacked Michael Beale.

With the chance to take one step towards glory ahead of them, however, reports have suggested that Clement could face one more injury blow. According to the Daily Mail via Ibrox News, Ridvan Yilmaz is facing a late fitness test ahead of the Old Firm derby to line up alongside James Tavernier, Connor Goldson and John Souttar, who will all start in defence.

The left-back has taken the starting place from Borna Barisic this season, with the latter on course to leave on a free deal at the end of the season. And against Celtic of all teams, Rangers need their best side on hand with no time for sentiment regarding Barisic's final games in Glasgow. Clement will at least hope to see Yilmaz make the bench alongside Sima, McCausland and Sterling.

"Talented" Yilmaz now important under Clement

Whilst rumours regarding his Rangers future have circled over the last few months, Yilmaz has become an important part of Clement's side and will only grow in stature when Barisic leaves. As things stand, the left-back will be the only player in his role at the start of the next campaign, which guarantees minutes. Rangers will undoubtedly need to add another left-back, but that should only be to deputise Yilmaz.

The 22-year-old instantly earned the praise of former Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson when arriving in 2022: "Gio and I were clear in our desire to invest in a high potential and high-quality left-back. We have now secured that in the signing of Ridvan Yilmaz.

"He's a talented young player who has been coveted throughout Europe following outstanding performances for Besiktas. We also know how highly regarded he is in the Turkish National Team. This is another exciting young player to join our squad, and we are delighted to bring Ridvan to Rangers."

Highlighting his importance, Yilmaz will be a major miss for the Gers if he fails to pass his late fitness test ahead of a crucial Old Firm derby clash against Celtic.

"Incredible" £200k-p/w Tottenham player "will leave" this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are set to lose the services of one of their highest earners this summer, it has emerged, after transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that he will leave north London.

Postecoglou's revolution in full swing

Though there was no shortage of concerns for Tottenham heading into the season without Harry Kane, they have enjoyed a thoroughly successful Premier League campaign to date.

Ange Postecoglou has breathed new life into the north London side, and though they are not always getting the results they want, the style of football is a refreshing change from the tactics of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

However, relics of past regimes remain, and it is set to be another big summer of transfer action in a bid to fully mould the squad to one fitting Postecoglou's vision with signings and departures alike.

Massive earner set to leave

Now, it has been confirmed that Tottenham are set to allow Tanguy Ndombele to leave permanently this summer.

The French midfielder arrived for £63m (including add-ons) in 2019, but never really impressed during his time in north London and fell out of favour amid criticisms of laziness.

Weekly wages: Tottenham Hotspur FC 2025/26 highest-paid players

The north London are among the top six spenders when it comes to players’ salaries, but who earns the most?

ByCharlie Smith Sep 24, 2025

He has spent the last two and a half years away from the club on loan, returning to Lyon before spending seasons at Napoli and Galatasaray. However, he has never really hit the heights that he managed before moving to north London initially.

So far this season, he has racked up just four starts and 449 minutes in Turkey, and though there is an option to buy the player in his current loan move, his form and reports of a bust-up with the manager have left this almost certain not to be taken up by Galatasaray.

That would mean Ndombele will once again return to N17 this summer and have just a year left to run on his £200,000-per-week contract.

However, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed what fate awaits him – and it will likely come as a relief to Spurs fans.

"He will leave," the transfer guru confirmed. "That’s the idea. Obviously, I think it’s one to follow in the summer because, at the moment, it is still early to understand if there will be some opportunity in Europe or in a different market – that is a possibility."

There is undoubtedly still a top-quality player in the Frenchman somewhere. Speaking during his time at West Ham United, fellow midfielder Declan Rice was full of praise for the Frenchman, labelling him one of the best he's played against.

"The perception of him shouldn’t be what it is, because I tell you now, he is one of the toughest I have played against. He is top. Just a street footballer on the pitch. He takes the ball anywhere, with little flicks and tricks. Like he doesn’t care. He does everything so confidently," the Arsenal man explained.

Tottenham's Tanguy Ndombele

“With players like that, you just have to let them play. Give them the freedom to go out and do whatever they want. When we played against Lyon in the Europa League, he was incredible. He’s a top player”

However, that player has never shown himself for Tottenham, and a clean break could be best for all parties this summer.

James Anderson heads to Manchester City in bid to overcome injury

James Anderson is set to swap Old Trafford for the Etihad, after arranging to train at Manchester City in a bid to recover from the calf injury that wrecked his Ashes campaign.Anderson, 37, bowled just four overs in the first Test against Australia at Edgbaston in July before suffering a recurrence of the injury that he first sustained while playing for Lancashire at Sedburgh this summer. He was subsequently left out of the England squad that will play two Tests in New Zealand next month, but still hopes to resume his career on the South Africa tour in December and January. The agreement with City means that Anderson will be able to use the facilities at their Etihad campus for the next two months, accompanied by England’s head of strength and conditioning Rob Ahmun. The pair met with City’s head of sports science, Sam Erith, on Tuesday to discuss the arrangement. Anderson has previously trained in the off-season at Burnley, his home club, at the invitation of the manager, Sean Dyche. With 575 Test wickets from 149 matches to date, Anderson is already the leading wicket-taker in England’s Test history, and recently overtook Australia’s Glenn McGrath to become the most prolific seam bowler of all time. However, he has no plans to retire just yet, and recently said that he wanted to emulate Ryan Giggs, who played for Manchester United until he was 40.”It has been absolutely devastating to miss the Ashes series but I have not thought for one second about retiring,” Anderson said. “In fact, I’m going to look into how Ryan Giggs was able to play football at the highest level until he was 40. That’s what I’d like to do.”

Levy told he could be set for "huge loss" on Tottenham player this summer

Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy have been told they could be set for a "huge loss" on another one of their players this summer, with it looking likely that a fair few don't have a future under Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs players who could leave the club this summer

While Postecoglou's arrival has helped to transform certain players, there are also those who have become surplus to requirements.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, once a mainstay under Antonio Conte, Nuno Espirito Santo and Jose Mourinho, is now mainly a back-up and has made the vast majority of his appearances from the substitutes bench this season. The Dane has been regularly linked with a Spurs exit for quite some time but elected to remain in the January window, which is the same for young winger Bryan Gil.

Gil is being tipped to leave Tottenham in the summer, though, given his decision to stay in north London hasn't resulted in more minutes on the pitch.

There is also the small matter of Spurs players out on loan, with Tanguy Ndombele, Joe Rodon, Djed Spence, Japhet Tanganga and Sergio Reguilon all out on temporary spells and facing uncertain futures at the club. The latter is currently on loan at Brentford, where he's made seven league appearances and registered an assist for Thomas Frank's side.

Postecoglou doesn't appear to favour Reguilon, as the Spaniard was shipped out to Brentford immediately after a previous half-season loan at Man United earlier in the campaign.

Tottenham told they are set for "huge loss" on Reguilon

Signed from Sevilla in 2020 for around £28 million, Reguilon hasn't quite realised his potential in north London and is out of contract next year.

Speaking to Tottenham News, club expert John Wenham, who sometimes breaks news on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels, believes Levy is set for a "huge loss" on Reguilon at Spurs this summer.

“I know he has featured for Brentford, but with a year left on his contract this summer it is hard to imagine Spurs getting any more than £8million for him, which is a huge loss.

“A lot of people have told me that Reguilon should have been kept as a backup left-back rather than Ben Davies, but people seem to forget that Postecoglou did have a close look at him in pre-season.

“He started Reguilon in three or four of those games and decided that he wasn’t for him. Reguilon is very chaotic, he is not good defensively and he needs to be moved on.”

The former La Liga ace, who once featured in the division's Team of the Year in 2019/2020, has certainly dwindled after first joining Tottenham with a lot of promise – so it remains to be seen exactly how much Levy and co can recuperate for him.

"Brilliant" player has no future at Everton after ruthless Dyche decision

As Everton anxiously anticipate the result of their appeal against their 10-point deduction for breaching Financial Fair Play rules earlier this season, Sean Dyche is beginning to turn his attention to the summer transfer window and preparing to make some ruthless decisions at Goodison Park, according to reports.

Everton transfer news

The Everton headlines have been centred around potential exits rather than incomings for a few months now and that's unlikely to go away anytime soon with the summer transfer window fast approaching.

The two biggest names linked with a move away are Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite. Onana is still reportedly attracting interest from Chelsea and has a price-tag of £51m. Branthwaite, meanwhile, has seen his name linked with clubs as big as Real Madrid in what would likely be a dream move for a hefty fee.

It's no major surprise that big-money moves could be possible out of Everton this summer, given their need to balance the books after two FFP charges. If the Toffees do drop down from the Premier League, they will be left with no choice but to sanction the sale of a number of key players. There is one player who Dyche isn't exactly desperate to keep, however.

According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Mason Holgate no longer has a future at Everton whilst Dyche is in charge. The defender is currently on loan at Sheffield United and made the headlines for the wrong reasons last time out when his horror tackle on Kaoru Mitoma resulted in a red card inside 13 minutes.

Holgate's loan spell is his second of the season, having failed to earn a place in Russell Martin's Southampton side on a consistent enough basis earlier in the campaign, before being recalled by Everton and sent to the Blades.

"Brilliant" Holgate needs fresh start

Holgate's Everton career has taken a downward dive in recent years, having initially got off to a promising start after completing a move worth a reported £2m in 2015. 18-years-old at the time, Holgate is now 27 and may look back on what might have been in Merseyside, with his time at Everton seemingly destined to come to an end.

Everton defender Mason Holgate.

There was a point in which the defender was at the centre of praise from the likes of Peter Crouch, who told the Daily Mail after Everton's victory over Liverpool in 2021.

Three years later, however, and Holgate isn't the player that Crouch predicted and must now go again at the end of the season, when he may finally get a permanent move away from Goodison Park.

Everton reject deadline-busting bid from Leeds for "great" squad player

Everton are believed to have turned down a bid for a "great" player late on in the January transfer window, according to a fresh update regarding his future.

Everton transfer news

The Blues have been linked with doing various incoming and outgoing business before the end of the month, but deadline day arrives on Thursday, so they have little time left to get anything done. West Ham winger Said Benrahma is one player reportedly being looked at by Everton, with the Algerian really struggling to be a key man for the Hammers this season, making only five starts in the Premier League.

Another who has been backed to move to Goodison Park is Marseille midfielder Pape Gueye, and the same applies to teenage Boca Juniors centre-back Aaron Anselmino, who is seen as a possible future partner in defence for Jarrad Branthwaite.

In terms of players leaving, Ben Godfrey is one individual who could move on, with the likes of Leeds United and Rangers showing an interest in recent months. Amadou Onana is another whose future remains up in the future, amid links to Newcastle United and Arsenal.

Everton reject Ben Godfrey bid

According to a fresh update from Football Insider, Everton have rejected a loan bid from Leeds for Ben Godfrey.

Leeds United transfer target Ben Godfrey in action for Everton.

"The Whites’ bid has been rebuffed despite Everton’s openness to allowing the centre-back to leave Goodison Park this month. It is believed Toffees boss Sean Dyche has given the green light for the centre-back to leave as the club look to reduce their wage bill.

"A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Leeds are “still pushing” to land Godfrey and will return with an improved offer in a bid to agree a late deal. Leeds turned their attention to landing the England international after his move to Serie A side Atalanta collapsed earlier this month due to Italy’s tax break abolishment."

While having Godfrey around is no bad thing for Everton, in terms of retaining strong depth, it does feel as though a temporary move away this month would be best for him, allowing him to rebuild his career after falling out of favour under Sean Dyche.

This season, the two-cap England international has only featured twice in the Premier League, highlighting his squad status, but he is still someone who has been lauded by Rio Ferdinand for his out-and-out defensive qualities in the past:

"Ben Godfrey, as good a defender as he is, going forward isn’t his best attribute and really he’s not going to be overlapping all game. He is not like Danny Alves, he’s not like Kyle Walker or Trent Alexander-Arnold. His main attribute is to get you one v one and defend against you. He’s great at that."

Unless Dyche's stance suddenly changes, a summer exit from Everton looks almost certain for Godfrey, but a loan move away this month would also still be for the best.

Levy now preparing offer to sign versatile young attacker for Tottenham

A versatile young attacker is seen as one of the most "concrete" potential Tottenham signings this month as chairman Daniel Levy and co ready an offer.

Spurs want three new January signings

According to recent reports, Spurs are chasing up to three major new additions in January – a centre-back, midfielder and winger to bolster Ange Postecoglou's options.

The north Londoners have suffered from a major lack of depth at the heart of Postecoglou's defence in particular, with both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero being absent for large periods since early November.

Tottenham's first choice centre-back pairing have often been replaced by makeshift duo Emerson Royal and Ben Davies. Spurs' record is pretty dire when they're both selected to marshal the back line, prompting Levy and technical director Johan Lange to make January moves as the window opens.

Indeed, Spurs are attempting to sign Genoa star Radu Dragusin, and it's widely reported that talks are advancing after they agreed personal terms with the defender (Fabrizio Romano).

Elsewhere, Postecoglou is reportedly keen on a new midfield engine and wide man as well, and one player who's been heavily linked is Ajax sensation Stanis Idumbo. The attacking midfielder is a target for Spurs, and rumour has it Idumbo would actually come straight into Postecoglou's first team (Kevin Sauvage).

Tottenham "putting together" proposal for Idumbo

CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs has shared an update on the matter this week. Speaking to Last Word on Spurs, he says Tottenham are "putting together a proposal" to sign Idumbo and he is a very concrete potential signing for Postecoglou – but they face stiff competition from Sevilla.

“I think Muzambo is the most concrete because Spurs are putting together a proposal but there is competition from Sevilla, and the feeling talking to sources is that Sevilla may be a bit more aggressive and that they may be ahead in that race at the moment,” Jacobs said.

“There might be a sale in January, or it might be a pre-agreement because I think he becomes a free agent in June anyway. I think that Muzambo is actually going to turn into a formal proposal, whereas I think Itakura is just being looked at.”

The Belgian is seen as a player of huge promise, with Malmo video scout Elijah Michiels already raving over his versatility, ball control and creativity.
