Better than Mudryk: Chelsea have a teen who could be their next Hazard

Chelsea has been the home to numerous elite-level talents over the years, with many capturing the hearts of the fanbase.

Didier Drogba was a striker who produced consistent moments of magic in the final third for the Blues, starring in the Champions League final back in 2012 – scoring the crucial equaliser before sliding home the winning penalty in the shootout.

John Terry is another player who’s cemented himself in the club’s history forever, making 546 appearances for his boyhood club over a 17-year period from 2000 to 2017.

John Terry celebrates winning the Europa League with Chelsea

He often featured alongside midfielder Frank Lampard, with the former England international still to this day the club’s record scorer after notching a total of 211 goals during his 13-year stint at Stamford Bridge.

However, in recent years, the club haven’t had as much success as they would’ve liked, with one player standing out as a fan-favourite after his own contribution to the football club.

Eden Hazard’s time at Chelsea

After joining the Blues in a £32m deal back in 2012, Eden Hazard arrived at Chelsea, unknown to many and loved by everyone, after his spell in West London.

The Belgian quickly caught the eye with his quick dribbling and his eye for goal, immediately becoming a fan-favourite at the Bridge.

No goal can quite sum up his talents other than his solo effort against Arsenal back in 2017, where the winger picked up the ball up in the middle of the park, before shrugging off numerous players before slotting home.

Arguably his best performance came in his final game for the club, scoring two against the Gunners in the Europa League final victory, before departing in a seismic £150m deal to join Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Whilst no fan wanted the star to depart the club, it was a move that made sense given his achievements for the Blues, allowing Hazard to go and feature at the very top level of European football.

Since his departure in 2019, the club have failed to sign an adequate replacement for the winger, but new boss Enzo Maresca could unearth his own version of the Belgian in the months ahead.

Chelsea's next Eden Hazard

Mykhalio Mudryk has endured a tricky start to life at Chelsea, only scoring seven times in his 62 appearances following his £89m move to the club from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023.

Mykhaylo Mudryk for Chelsea

He’s only started one league game under Maresca so far this season, struggling to cement his place in the side following the form of Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke – alongside new addition Pedro Neto.

As a result, Maresca could unleash youngster Kendry Paez upon his move to the Bridge, with the 17-year-old able to make his first appearance for the club on his 18th birthday in May – with the club forking out £17m for the talent last summer.

Despite his tender age, he’s already demonstrated that he’s a bigger talent than big-money signing Mudryk, whilst also being the perfect player to fill the boots of Hazard.

When comparing their respective stats from the last 12 months, youngster Paez has contributed with more goals and assists in fewer matches – whilst also averaging more progressive passes per 90 – demonstrating his talent in the final, potentially following in Hazard’s footsteps.

The Ecuadorian averaged more carries into the final third per 90, showcasing his dribbling ability, similar to that of the Belgian fan-favourite who loved to attack the opposition 1v1. He may register fewer progressive carries than a certain Mudryk but he still evidently excels in that area.

Although it’s still very early days in his professional career, Paez has shown that he has all the abilities to thrive in his career, hopefully being able to transfer his skills to Stamford Bridge upon his move in the coming months.

As for Mudryk, Paez’s move could spell the end of his time at the club, with the Ukrainian needing to demonstrate his talents between now and May to avoid losing his place to the 17-year-old.

> Olho no Cartola FC! Veja cinco opções por posição para montar seu time na 31ª rodada

> Veja e simule a tabela do Brasileirão

There could be some late activity before Friday’s deadline, too, with Lopetegui addressing the club’s plans last week: "In this time before the market closes, for everyone it's still not certain who might come and go.

"We have to adapt, but the competition is tough. We've tried to adapt with the new players, and we have to balance everything and try to be competitive.

"It's true that you have to keep competing in the market while working towards games. Once the market is closed I think the players are fully focused, but we have to adapt. For sure I would prefer the market to be closed before the start of the season."

One player who has been heavily linked with a move to West Ham is PSG midfielder Soler. The club have been locked in talks with the French giants, however, an alternative target appears to have been identified, with an offer going in for his services.

West Ham make bid for Richard Rios

According to reporter Pipe Sierra, relayed by The Boot Room, West Ham have made an offer of $22m (£16.6m) to sign Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios. However, that bid has reportedly been turned down by Palmeiras, who don’t want to part ways with the player at this moment in time.

“Palmeiras rejected $22m (£16.6m) from West Ham for Richard Rios (24). The Brazilian team said they did not want to negotiate his departure. For now, there is no further progress from the London team.”

A Colombia international, Rios is primarily a central midfielder who can play in a deeper role or on the left, so would have given Lopetegui a versatile option in midfield.

Valued at a career-high €10m by Transfermarkt, Rios only joined Palmeiras last year and spent time with fellow Brazilian sides Flamengo and Guarani prior to that.

Also linked with Everton and Leicester City earlier this summer, it doesn’t look as if Rios, a "ball-carrying machine" as dubbed by Ben Mattinson, will be moving to England before the deadline.

Chelsea player ratings vs Heidenheim: Christopher Nkunku & Mykhailo Mudryk get the job done, as Blues forwards on target in Europa Conference League, Jadon Sancho stars with two assists

The Frenchman's fifth goal in four matches sent Enzo Maresca's side on their way to another European victory.

Christopher Nkunku and Mykhailo Mudryk got the goals as Chelsea kept their perfect Conference League record intact with a 2-0 win at Heidenheim on Thursday, but it was Jadon Sancho who deserved most credit for the victory.

Sancho created both goals with excellent crosses in the second half, overcoming a quiet start to tee up Nkunku and Mudryk for fine finishes as the Blues put the first blemish on the hosts' own record in the competition.

The German side had a few chances to hurt the Blues, in part thanks to some questionable displays from the likes of Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile, but they came up against a superb shot stopper in Filip Jorgensen. They were also frustrated to see two goals chalked off.

Chelsea had the upper hand for the majority of the game, with Marc Guiu showing a lot of promise early on but he failed to deliver. It was left to Nkunku to break the deadlock when his outstretched leg met Sancho's cross and the forward added a composed finish.

The game appeared to be fading out when a smart combination from Sancho and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall ended with the winger's excellent ball back to Mudryk to send it into the top corner.

Palace can repeat Wharton masterclass by signing £20m "wonderkid"

It's been a roller coaster five months or so for the Crystal Palace faithful following the appointment of Oliver Glasner last season.

The Austrian has thoroughly altered the club's direction and turned them into one of the most attractive projects in the Premier League, and while they're set to lose stars like Michael Olise this summer, you can be sure they'll replace them.

In fact, the latest star touted for a move to Selhurst Park could see Steve Parish and Co repeat the masterclass trick that saw them recruit Adam Wharton in the winter.

Crystal Palace transfer news

According to transfers expert Fabrizio Romano, Palace are incredibly interested in signing Sunderland's exciting prospect Jobe Bellingham this summer.

The Italian claims that the young Englishman is one of Glasner's dream signings and that they are just waiting for the player's green light before making an offer to the Black Cats.

However, it won't be a cheap deal to complete for the Eagles, as Ed Aarrons from the Guardian claimed earlier this week that the Championship side are holding out for offers in excess of £20m.

It would represent a significant investment in a somewhat unproven youngster by the club, but considering the last time they did that, they picked up Wharton, it might be worth the risk.

Palace could repeat their Wharton trick

If there is any trepidation from the board or fans about paying such a substantial fee for a young English midfielder from the Championship, then they only need to cast their minds back to the winter window when they paid £22m to sign Wharton from Blackburn Rovers who had just 51 senior appearances under his belt.

Since then, the 20-year-old has played 16 games for the South Londoners, racked up three assists, made his England debut and is now in Germany as a member of Gareth Southgate's Euros squad – even if he isn't getting as much game time as he should.

It would be hard to describe the transfer as anything other than an overwhelming success, and while it would be wholly unfair to expect Bellingham to quite match that trajectory, his performances in the second tier are undoubtedly promising.

In 45 Championship matches last season, the Stourbridge "wonderkid", as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, scored seven goals and provided one assist, which is genuinely impressive for an 18-year-old midfielder in his first full campaign of senior football.

Moreover, FBref, which compares players in similar positions across the next best 14 competitions, has placed the young dynamo in the top 5% of midfielders for non-penalty expected goals, the top 22% for actual non-penalty goals and touches in the opposition's penalty area, the top 12% for progressive passes received and the top 14% for non-penalty expected goals plus assists, all per 90.

Ultimately, signing unproven youngsters from the Championship will always be a risk, but based on Bellingham's performances last season, it looks like one worth taking for Palace, especially if they end up with another Wharton situation.

2022 Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa postponed to February 2023

The ICC announced on Thursday that the next women’s T20 World Cup, originally scheduled to be held in South Africa in November 2022, has been postponed to February 2023. Therefore only two multi-team major women’s events will be played in 2022 – the ODI World Cup in New Zealand followed by the Commonwealth Games in July, with the multi-format Ashes scheduled for the latter half of the year.According to an ICC release, the decision was made taking into consideration that there are “currently no major women’s events scheduled to take place in 2023, [so] the board confirmed the switch for the T20 World Cup to better support player preparation and to continue to build the momentum around the women’s game beyond 2022.ALSO READ: Six teams to qualify via ICC rankings for 2022 Commonwealth Games Speaking on the development, ICC CEO Manu Sawhney said: “Moving the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup to 2023 makes perfect sense on a number of levels. Firstly, it will provide a better workload balance for players giving them the best possible opportunity to perform to the highest levels on a global stage. Secondly, we can continue to build the momentum around the women’s game through 2022 and into 2023. We are committed to fueling the growth of the women’s game and today’s decision enables us to do that over the longer term.”In August, the ICC had announced that the 2021 women’s ODI World Cup, originally scheduled for February-March 2021 in New Zealand, was deferred by a year, with an eye on maintaining the “integrity of the tournament” in the wake of the disparity in the level of preparedness of the teams caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The governing body, however, is yet to make an announcement on the fate of the inaugural Under-19 women’s World Cup, which Bangladesh are due to host in January 2021.

Ratcliffe eyes Man Utd move for £35m "monster" who could replicate Bruno

Manchester United’s squad will undergo drastic change this summer, ahead of a huge season in 2024/25. They ended the current campaign in the perfect way, triumphing in the FA Cup final, beating Manchester City in the end-of-season showpiece at Wembley Stadium 2-1, thanks to goals from academy stars Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

However, despite silverware to end the term, the future of manager Erik ten Hag remains up in the air, following a poor season for the Red Devils overall. They finished eighth in the Premier League, which could see Ten Hag leave the club, with new owners INEOS currently conducting a post-season review. There is currently no time frame given for the review to finish.

It is not only Ten Hag who could leave at the end of the season. Many players could be sold in the summer, and some have already departed Old Trafford. Anthony Martial was a confirmed departure on a free transfer, after nine years of service at United. His fellow Frenchman, Raphael Varane, has also left the club following the expiration of his deal.

With that in mind, United need to replace their two exiting Frenchmen. They have already been linked with a Varane replacement and could look to do a deal this summer.

Man Utd target new centre-back

The player in question here is Sporting CP’s Ivorian centre-back Ousmane Diomande, who has been linked with several clubs this summer. The latest of those clubs is United, and they could try and secure his services swiftly to beat any other interested parties.

Indeed, this is according to a report from The Express journalist Charlie Gordon, who broke the story on Friday. According to the report, United are 'considering a move' for the 20-year-old, having met with his team earlier in the season, and are now continuing the relationship since INEOS’ takeover.

ousmane-diomande-transfer-news-newcastle-premier-league

Gordon explains that United are not the only Premier League side who want to sign the defender. The Red Devils’ bitter Rivals Liverpool are keen on Diomande, as are Eddie Howe’s side Newcastle United, although their interest is thought to have “cooled” in the last few weeks.

United’s interest was piqued when Sporting slashed the price of the 20-year-old defender. He has a release clause in his contract worth £68m but Sporting would accept an offer of around £51m and even consider bids as low as £35m. They need to raise funds in the summer, which has led to United's interest in the player.

Why Diomande would be a good signing

If Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co manage to get a deal for Diomande over the line this summer, he would be a signing for both the present and the future, given he is just 20 years of age. He has featured 26 times in the league for Sporting this season, as they won the title, and helped to keep ten clean sheets. He even managed to get himself on the scoresheet twice and grab an assist.

On the ball, the Ivorian is a wonderful progressive passer. As per FBref, he averages 5.15 progressive passes per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 9% of centre-backs across Europe. The 67.36 average passes he completes per 90 shows he is comfortable on the ball and ranks him in the top 5% of centre-backs.

Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

Not only that, Diomande is a superb ball carrier. He averages 57.32 carries per 90, which places him in the top 4% of centre-backs. His comfort on the ball is very impressive and shows he would be a calming presence at the back for United.

Out of possession, Diomande is also a wonderful defender. The 20-year-old uses his impressive pace to his advantage and is excellent when defending wide areas. This is reflected in this 5.62 ball recoveries per 90 on average, which places him in the top 18%. Diomande is very dominant in the air, averaging a 72.3% win rate, placing him in the top 6% of centre-backs. He is a superb defender, especially in the wide areas.

In signing Diomande, who could “become a monster” according to football analyst Ben Mattinson, United will be hoping he can replicate the impact their last signing from Sporting has had. That man, of course, is Bruno Fernandes.

Whilst they play vastly different positions, Fernandes a creative genius in the final third and Diomande a fast, strong defender, he could elevate United’s side to the next level, as their captain did when he first joined the club.

The Portugal international has currently got 79 goals and 66 assists in 233 games for the Red Devils, but his first few months saw him bag 12 times and register eight assists in just 22 appearances in all competitions. United will undoubtedly hope Diomande can put up the defensive equivalent of those numbers.

United making signings from Sporting is a match made in heaven, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani also joining the Old Trafford club from Leões. Perhaps Diomande could be the next player in line to continue that dynasty, if he joins as part of the new Ratcliffe regime this summer.
