He wants to join: Nottingham Forest make late bid for £25m Awoniyi upgrade

Nottingham Forest exited the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle earlier this week, falling to a defeat to fellow Premier League side Newcastle United following a penalty shootout at the City Ground.

Striker Taiwo Awoniyi endured a difficult first start of the new campaign, failing to make a mark on the game, before blazing his penalty over the bar, topping off his disappointing return to action.

The Nigerian has lost his starting place under Nuno Espírito Santo to Chris Wood, with his performance on Wednesday night unlikely to change the mind of the Reds boss.

However, the 27-year-old may find himself as the third-choice striker on Trentside, with the club still in the market for a new centre-forward.

Santiago Gimenez once looked like he was set for a move to the East Midlands, but the club have turned their attention to another target who could arrive before the deadline in the coming hours.

Nottingham Forest's search for a striker

According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Nottingham Forest have made a third bid to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush in an attempt to bolster their forward line.

Plettenberg claims that the Reds want to pay no more than £21m for the Egyptian, but the Bundesliga side aren’t willing to let the forward go for any less than £25m before the closure of the window.

It’s also been reported elsewhere that Marmoush wants to move to the City Ground, with Nuno’s side needing to up their offer if a deal is to progress for the 25-year-old.

His tally of 18 goal contributions in Germany last season would undoubtedly provide that added cutting edge that Forest are looking for, proving to be an upgrade on current striker Awoniyi.

Why Marmoush would be an upgrade on Awoniyi

It’s been a very stop-start period for Awoniyi in recent months, with the former Union Berlin forward constantly plagued with injury issues, having been restricted to just 12 league starts in 2023/24.

The setbacks have taken a toll on the one-time Liverpool man, preventing him from a regular spell in the first-team – undoubtedly contributing to his dismal showing in the cup on Wednesday night.

Unfortunately, the club are unable to rely on the Nigerian due to his fitness woes and his lack of form, subsequently turning to Marmoush, with the Frankfurt forward – who has 17 goals in just 43 games for his current side – a huge upgrade on the current Reds man.

The “superb” ace, as described by former coach Timo Schultz, outscored Awoniyi last season, whilst also dominating the Nigerian ace with his efforts on goal during the 2023/24 campaign.

He also excelled in possession, averaging more progressive carries and progressive passes per 90, whilst winning more aerial battles despite his smaller stature than the current Forest ace.

The rumoured price tag would be an excellent fee for a talent who has the ability to find the back of the net, whilst also having the potential to improve further in the years ahead at the City Ground.

Awoniyi has unfortunately failed to kick on after his recent troubles with injuries, with the club making the right call in making a move for Marmoush before the closure of the window.

Batting depth, spin twins Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja seal it for Chennai Super Kings

With Royals slipping from 87 for 2 to 95 for 7, they were beaten long before the match ended

A batting order that stretches all the way down to No. 11 continues to mask the Chennai Super Kings’ flaws – two very glaring ones at least. But the rest of their team is functioning pretty well. Too well as it turned out for Rajasthan Royals, who collapsed in the middle overs in a chase of 189, and were beaten long before the match ended. The opener rising to the challenge
When Faf du Plessis walks out to bat, he knows he needs to score runs for two people, and he kinda seems okay with it.Jaydev Unadkat probably wasn’t. He was left utterly confused as he leaked two fours behind the wicket and two sixes in front of it.du Plessis’ innovation – he appears one of the few Super Kings batters willing to try unorthodox shots – helped them to 46 for 2 in the powerplay. And so long as he can do that, his under-fire partner has some room to breathe.Ruturaj Gaikwad doesn’t have a power game and in all three of his innings so far he has looked very out of place. The fading captain
There were so many times in the past that the arrival of MS Dhoni, with the score at 125 and six overs left in the game, would herald total destruction. Here he faced 17 of the last 37 balls of the innings and made 18 uncomfortable runs. A run a ball for half the deliveries at the death is just not ideal at all.The Royals deserve credit for that. They forced him to play spin, which he hates at the start of his innings, and their two left-arm quicks, Chetan Sakariya in particular, were brilliant with their changes of pace.So it’s not just that Dhoni’s powers are fading. His opponents know just what to do to make them fade. The end-overs rally
The Super Kings bat deep. And they just wouldn’t stop swinging. Sam Curran (13 off six) launched his second delivery for a jaw-dropping six over point. It is hard to reconcile his power and his frame. But he has it. And he uses it superbly.Dwayne Bravo (20* off eight) was on it too, starting off with a vintage loft over extra cover and signing off with a six straight down the ground. The amount of effort he was putting into clearing the boundary was apparent when one time when he tried the bat just flew out of his hand and went halfway to fine leg. Thanks to them, the Super Kings made 45 runs off the last three overs to finish with 188.The new Mr Super King
Last season he was their best hitter. And as a result of that the management is now giving him the chance to face more deliveries. Ravindra Jadeja walked out to bat in the 14th over tonight. And while he couldn’t reprise his big-hitting heroics from 2020, he has found his bowling groove again. An impossibly beautiful delivery that bowled Jos Buttler was ample proof of that.It pitched on middle and leg, at a spot and pace that didn’t allow the batter to push forward or back, and turned waspishly to strike the middle and off. Buttler was practically keeling over, his balance and his wicket both ripped out of his hands. That kickstarted a Royals collapse. Five wickets – two to Jadeja, three to Moeen Ali – for just eight runs. And here are the names that were part of that procession. Shivam Dube, David Miller, Chris Morris and Riyan Parag. All potential match-winners. All undone in the tamest way. The first two lbw playing across the line. The next two caught slogging to the deep. With Royals slipping from 87 for 2 to 95 for 7, their chase was, y’know… sad face emoji.

Despite this, England interim manager Lee Carsley surprisingly included the 29-year-old in his final squad for the Three Lions' Nations League matches. This decision raised eyebrows, particularly as City manager Pep Guardiola had already stated that Grealish would not be fit until after the international break.

Man City could now join fierce race for "excellent" £105m KDB replacement

With Kevin de Bruyne's Manchester City future recently thrown into doubt, the Blues could now join a fierce race to sign a £105m star ahead of rivals Manchester United this summer.

Man City transfer news

Following a fourth consecutive Premier League title in a season that also followed winning the treble, it seems as though certain Manchester City stars have been left pondering their future, perhaps wondering whether their work in England is now complete. Among those stars are Ederson and De Bruyne.

Reports suggest that the City duo have both been targeted by clubs in the Saudi Pro League in what could deal Pep Guardiola a major blow, with the Brazilian shot-stopper even offered a massive £500,000 per week deal to move.

Man City want to beat Man Utd to signing of "incredible" 16 y/o this summer

He is shining at academy level for club and country.

ByHenry Jackson Jul 6, 2024

According to Rudy Galetti for TeamTalk, De Bruyne has even agreed personal terms with Al-Nassr, who must now negotiate with Manchester City in order to get a deal over the line this summer. The Premier League champions would reportedly rather cash in on their star midfielder this summer than lose him for free upon the expiry of his current deal this time next year.

With a potential exit on the cards, those at the Etihad have reportedly drawn up a plan of their own, however. As per Galetti and TeamTalk, Manchester City will join a "fierce" race to sign Joao Neves if De Bruyne leaves this summer.

The Benfica star reportedly has a £105m release clause, so while not a direct replacement for the Belgian in terms of style, the funds raised from De Bruyne's sale would aid in getting a deal done without pushing the limits of PSR. He has also attracted interest from Manchester United.

Benfica midfielder Joao Neves

Still just 19 years old, Neves is certainly one for the future and a player who could complete the near-impossible task of replacing De Bruyne's influence at Manchester City eventually, even if not providing the same attacking output.

The Cityzens rarely miss in the transfer market and the Portugal international is another player who would likely join Guardiola's long list of success stories in an illustrious career.

Neves and Foden can fill De Bruyne void

Whilst replacing De Bruyne will be no easy task, Neves has shown more than enough potential at Benfica to prove that he's capable of filling the potential void left behind by the Belgian. Given that Phil Foden finally became the main man at Manchester City last season too, the teenager would be able to ease himself into such a role, as Guardiola looks to replace his Belgian superstar by committee.

A player who is naturally more active off the ball at 19 years old compared to 32-year-old De Bruyne, Neves would offer Guardiola a different type of midfielder in place of his current star, whilst turning to Foden when it comes to directly replacing the final third output next season.

What's more, City would be getting one over on rivals Manchester United by landing a deal for a player who Bruno Fernandes has previously praised. The Red Devils captain said via 90Min: "I don't know if United rumours are true, but I know he is ready for that big jump. He is an excellent player, he's with the national team, that's also why the big clubs are after him."

Approach made: Aston Villa in contact to sign teenager compared to Lampard

Aston Villa have made an approach to sign a teenager from a Premier League rival, according to a new report.

Aston Villa transfer latest

Unai Emery, Monchi and NSWE are working behind the scenes to bolster the Villa squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, where Champions League football will be on offer at Villa Park.

The first high-profile signing of the summer will be Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen, who actually played in the Champions League final for Borussia Dortmund earlier this month. The Bundesliga giants won’t be exercising their option to sign Maatsen permanently, which has allowed Villa to make their move and agree to a £37.5m deal.

Alongside Maatsen, former loanee Ross Barkley is poised to complete a permanent Villa transfer following a brilliant individual campaign with Luton Town, with Fabrizio Romano expecting an agreement with the midfielder at the beginning of July.

Alongside some senior signings, Villa are also adding to their academy ranks, already securing a deal for teenage defender Ethan Amundsen-Day, a Norwegian youth international who has left FC Copenhagen. Another teenage addition could be on the cards soon, this time in midfield.

Aston Villa make approach for West Ham teenager

According to Claret and Hugh, Aston Villa have made an approach to sign West Ham midfielder Lewis Orford.

Lewis Orford West Ham

The England U18 captain will soon be in the final 12 months of his Hammers deal, and there have been rumours of a stalemate between Orford and West Ham over fresh terms. This has seemingly led to Villa making their first move, looking to add Orford to their Villa Park academy ranks.

The Guardian actually named Orford in their ‘Next Generation 2022: 20 of the best talents at Premier League clubs’, comparing him to Declan Rice for his height and Frank Lampard for his ability to make late runs into the box.

“West Ham continues to be production line for midfielders and Orford, a lifelong fan, might be the latest to follow Declan Rice, Mark Noble, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Michael Carrick.

His height reminds of Rice and Carrick though he exhibits a greater turn of pace than either, with a range of passing beyond his years that has made him the Hammers’ Under-18 playmaker. There is something, too, of Lampard in his ability to arrive late on the scene for scoring opportunities. He played at Under-18 level when still qualified for Under-16 and Under-15 level and has dedicated himself to improving his set-piece delivery.”

Since this glowing report, Orford, aged 18, has progressed into West Ham’s U21 side and made 22 Premier League 2 appearances last season, scoring four goals and registering two assists.

Primarily a central midfielder, Orford has actually played as a centre-back and even a striker on occasion at youth level for the Hammers, and by the looks of things, a move to the Midlands is one to watch.

Katie Reid: Arsenal & England's Leah Williamson-like teen who has already won big praise from the Lionesses' captain

The 17-year-old impressed throughout the Gunners' pre-season campaign and now looks set for a breakthrough season as the Women's Super League returns

Katie Reid may never get a greater endorsement of her talent than Leah Williamson telling an audience that the teenager is primed to follow in her footsteps and take her place in the Arsenal team in the future. As the Lionesses' captain addressed those in attendance at the university earlier this year, she simply declared: "I now have the job of keeping Katie at bay for as long as possible because she's exceptional and she will take my shirt one day."

Those comments came shortly after Reid had replaced Williamson in the closing stages of a 5-0 victory over Bristol City, thus making her Arsenal debut at the age of 17. With only a few minutes on the pitch, fans didn't get a huge chance to see just what all the hype is about, but they certainly have during the summer.

After playing 90 minutes in the Gunners' match against an A-League Women All-Stars team back in May, Reid was one of the most impressive performers throughout the club's pre-season, showcasing ability that prompted Williamson to double down on her praise for the defender.

"Katie Reid is one of the best young kids I have seen come through," she told . "Especially her attitude, she is listening and watching everything. I said to her the other day that she is one of the shyest people I have ever met, but she is too good to be shy. She isn’t going to be left alone much longer, people will talk about her and want to talk to her. I love training with her. She is a big girl but she is wonderful technically and she is Arsenal."

As the new season approaches, Williamson is right. As an opportunity for more first-team action looks set to present itself, Reid is only going to be talked about more and more. This looks likely to a breakthrough campaign for the 17-year-old, one that can excite Arsenal and England fans in equal measure.

Getty ImagesWhere it all began

Reid has been part of the Arsenal set-up since she was 13 years old, that the age at which she made the switch from playing boys' football to girls' football. "It was interesting because I’d been used to a very quick, very physical game, but with the girls, their tactical understanding was better, their decision-making was better and their manipulation of the ball was better too, so I got to develop that side of my game," she explained earlier this year, in one of Arsenal's matchday programmes.

Having played across the defence and in midfield previously, it was when Reid got to the Under-16s that she would nail down her centre-back position, progressing gradually in that role to the point that she started to be in and around the first team environment aged 15. After getting those opportunities in training, and following a loan spell at Watford in the Championship, Reid then made her first-team debut in April 2024, as a late substitute in victory over Bristol City.

She's also been a regular England youth international throughout her young career, starting every game for the U17s at last summer's European Championships before progressing into the U19s ahead of their equivalent of the tournament earlier this year.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe big break

It has been through the summer of 2024 that Reid has really made a name for herself at Arsenal though, starring in a friendly against the A-League Women All-Stars shortly after the end of the 2023-24 campaign and then on the Gunners' pre-season tour of the United States. She was superb when starting the first game of that trip, against the Washington Spirit, and also managed to impress from the bench when Arsenal faced Chelsea a week later.

The teenager's performances led to much praise from fans on social media, where she was dubbed a 'clone' of Williamson and the '2.0' version of the England captain, and also from head coach Jonas Eidevall. "That doesn't come from overnight and her being up one week training with the first team," he said. "She's been involved on and off for the last two years and I think the level of her performance, it comes from that cooperation. It was really nice to see."

Getty ImagesHow it's going

After getting another start in the team's final pre-season match, at home to Southampton, Eidevall confirmed that Reid would be staying with the team for at least the first half of the 2024-25 season, rather than going out on loan. That's because, with Amanda Ilestedt announcing her pregnancy back in March, there is a real chance for the teenager to get minutes in the first team.

It'll be tough, as she's competing with two England stars in Williamson and Lotte Wubben-Moy, and a World Cup winner in Laia Codina, but Eidevall believes Reid can contribute to his side in the coming months.

"As always in Arsenal, we look globally and say what can we bring in?" he explained at last week's WSL season launch, talking about the process he and his staff went through after hearing Ilestedt's news. "But when we looked at options and what we had in front of us, we kept coming back to Katie Reid. Everything she does and everything we see when we see her play, she deserves a chance to be in the squad. You really see what a talented footballer she is and that she fully deserves a place in our squad."

Getty ImagesBiggest strengths

Having come through the Arsenal academy set-up, it's no surprise that one of Reid's biggest strengths is her technical ability, with her able to contribute effectively when the team is in possession. She's a strong and determined defender too, as was abundantly evident when she went toe-to-toe with Chelsea star Mayra Ramirez in pre-season. The Colombia international usually dominates her opponents, but the 17-year-old stood up tall and was not afraid of that individual battle whatsoever.

One thing that has impressed her team-mates in particular is how clear-minded she is in her decision-making. Some young players could be overwhelmed by the opportunities Reid has received in recent months, but she doesn't look to be, instead able to show remarkable composure when she needs to act. That has certainly stood out to Codina, who immediately pointed to how "calm" she is when GOAL asked about the teenager.

"I think that for her age, she doesn't seem to be 17, so it's something that impressed me a lot," Codina explained. "I also really like to try to help her if she has questions and I'm sure that she also can teach me some things, and I will be happy for it."
