Jason Behrendorff, Usman Qadir bag three-fors to inflict defeat on South Africans

Fifties from Josh Philippe and George Bailey steered the Prime Minister’s XI home in a chase of 174

The Report by Andrew McGlashan31-Oct-2018Usman Qadir in his follow through•Getty ImagesFaf du Plessis couldn’t help but giggle at the sight of George Bailey’s extraordinary batting stance, but it was Bailey who had the last laugh as his unbeaten half-century ensured the Prime Minister’s XI inflicted a four-wicket defeat on the South Africans at the start of their short tour. The left-arm quick Jason Behrendorff, who took two wickets in the first over of the match, and legspinner Usman Qadir – the son of former Pakistan legspinner Abdul Qadir – shone with the ball as they claimed three scalps apiece. The South Africans could only reach 173 and were bowled out in 42 overs, Aiden Markram (47) and David Miller (45) plus a little lower-order resistance the only bright spots in the below-par batting performance. In reply, the highly-rated Josh Philippe set the pace in the chase with 57 at better than a run a ball and though his wicket was part of a middle-order wobble the experience of Bailey alongside 19-year-old Jason Sangha took the PM’s XI most of the way towards victory. It was a lively start to the match when Behrendorff removed Quinton de Kock, dragging on, and had Reeza Hendricks caught at slip in the first four balls. He soon added South Africa captain du Plessis to leave them 3 for 30 before Markram and Miller provided some stability. However, just as the South Africans were finding their feet the innings fell away again. Markram picked out deep square leg and Farhaan Behardien was caught behind first ball to leave 19-year-old Blake Edwards on a hat-trick.When Miller picked out long-on the innings was threatening to end very early, but Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada managed to stretch the total beyond 150 before Qadir, who has stated his ambitions of playing for Australia having received the blessing of his father, closed out the innings with two wickets in four balls.Qadir is hoping to secure a distinguished talent visa which can be a fast-track to Australia citizenship, with a view to being available in time for the World T20 in 2020. To secure the visa, his application would need to be sponsored by CA and his performances would need to have demonstrated exceptional skill that would benefit Australian cricket. Watching from the stands, Australian Prime Minister saw first hand what Qadir could do.Steyn struck early in the PM XI’s innings to have Max Bryant caught at point and when Kurtis Patterson was caught behind attempting to leave the ball the South Africans were back in the match. Philippe’s fifty, which included an early six off Rabada, came off 48 balls before he and Sam Heazlett fell in quick succession to put the chase in the balance at 5 for 87.But Bailey, whose stance set du Plessis into a fit of giggles as he stood at second slip, and Sangha calmly took charge in a stand of 77 in 18 overs. Sangha struck a six apiece off Rabada and Dwaine Pretorius before Bailey clubbed the winning boundary through the leg side to bring up his half-century.The ODI series begins in Perth on Sunday.

Ange must now bench Spurs star who lost possession 20x v Palace

Nobody would have anticipated before this season kicked off the start Tottenham would have to their campaign, straight off the blocks at a rapid pace under new manager Ange Postecoglou in the Premier League.

Unbeaten in their first ten top-flight encounters with eight wins and two draws – which notably includes a dramatic 2-1 win over Liverpool in front of the rejuvenated Spurs home masses – Tottenham are flying high even with the backdrop of Harry Kane departing, a whole host of new players joining the building and an unproven boss in English football taking the reins.

Former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou.

The appointment of the Australian head coach has proven to be a master-stroke by the Spurs hierarchy, a universally liked figure amongst the north London faithful for the exciting brand of football he's been able to implement in such a short space of time but also for his mannerisms in press conferences and media work that show he isn't arrogant or disillusioned.

He could have to make a big decision however very soon, a call that wouldn't have him in the good books of this specific Lilywhites player.

Postecoglou could be forced into dropping Richarlison from his first-team plans completely if the 26-year-old's below-par performances continue, the Brazilian noticeably underperforming away at Crystal Palace recently which could have cost his side on another day.

Richarlison's performance vs Crystal Palace

The former Everton man looked shaky throughout his 64-minute spell on the Selhurst Park pitch, Spurs taking the lead a matter of minutes after his manager hauled him off the pitch – Heung-min Son saving the day again with an effort from point-blank range to extend his side's unbeaten run, Tottenham winning 2-1.

Tottenham's number nine was largely ineffective in forward areas against the Eagles, attempting one shot all night which trailed wide of its intended target per Sofascore.

Richarlison could have cost his side with the number of times he lost possession unnecessarily, losing the ball a grand total of 20 times per Sofascore – the 26-year-old off his game throughout, lackadaisical when his teammates needed him to be switched on and focused.

Before being substituted off, the once-feared Everton attacker kept needlessly giving away fouls out of frustration for his current employers – giving away two fouls, according to Sofascore, in a horror show for the Brazilian winger that saw Football.London writer Rob Guest hand him a 5/10 match rating.

Brennan Johnson would be Richarlison's replacement and the ex-Nottingham Forest man was instantly in the think of the action, helping Son convert home with the assist.

Richarlison, therefore, could be sweating about his immediate first-team future off the back of this anonymous display in south London with the Brazilian's other displays for Spurs this season not exactly cementing a starting spot.

Richarlison's numbers this season

The South American forward has only scored two times for Spurs so far this season, with Tottenham defender Cristian Romero tied with the attacker in the goalscoring charts.

Netting versus Sheffield United back in September, alongside helping himself to a further goal in the EFL Cup versus Fulham before Postecoglou's side crashed out on penalties, Richarlison is currently on a barren goalscoring spell of five straight games in the league.

This current form is a far cry away from the heights the 26-year-old consistently achieved during his four-season stay at Goodison Park, scoring ten times in his final season for the Toffees before upping and leaving for the English capital.

Postecoglou has a huge decision to make surrounding Richarlison's future in a Spurs shirt, with the likely outcome pointing in the direction of the ex-Celtic manager benching his number nine in favour of fresher options.

David Ornstein drops Man Utd takeover news involving Jassim and Ratcliffe

There has been movement in regards to a Manchester United takeover, according to reliable reporter David Ornstein.

Who is taking over from the Glazers at Man Utd?

The Glazers remain in full control at Old Trafford, almost 12 months on after initially putting the club up for sale last year. Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have been the main contenders to take control in Manchester, with both parties making final Man Utd takeover bids way back in April.

Despite talk going quiet over the summer, there have now been some fresh Man Utd takeover updates, with reports suggesting that Ratcliffe is looking to change his bid to initially take a minority stake of 25% from the Glazers. More recently, there were claims from Qatar that Jassim is very close to a Man Utd takeover. However, in another twist, Ornstein has shared what he’s heard from Old Trafford on any potential deal.

Talking in a Q&A for The Athletic, Ornstein provided a new Man Utd takeover update, saying that he’s heard Ratcliffe and INEOS are the frontrunners at this stage and not Jassim, although as he mentions, there have already been plenty of twists and turns.

“We’re getting question after question on this. I’m assured there has been movement and, contrary to reports that it going the way of Sheikh Jassim, I keep hearing that INEOS taking a minority stake and building from there remains more likely.

“That said, I was previously being told it’s going to Sheikh Jassim! This shows either the momentum keeps swinging or that none of us really know. Perhaps even the Glazers don’t know.”

How much do the Glazers want for Man Utd?

Earlier in the year, the Glazers’ asking price at Man Utd stood at around £6bn, with reports claiming they were not ready to budge from their valuation. However, more recently, it has been claimed that the Glazers could take Man Utd off the market and look to put the club back up for sale in 2025, looking to bring in between £7bn-£10bn.

A takeover will eventually happen, according to one of the first football agents Jon Smith, who has recently said that Jassim could eventually overpay to secure a deal.

“To be honest here, I’m not inside this deal, but I know quite a few of the funds who are close to the two bidders. It would appear vaguely intelligent for the Glazers to have looked again at the Gulf and said there’s a bigger game here, and we don’t want to sell ourselves short.

“They’ve got arguably the biggest entity on planet football, and if the Qataris are going to pay £5bn, maybe they’ll pay £10bn. Maybe it’s just a number, and they’ll settle on seven.

“These deals are notoriously complicated, and this is the biggest one of them all. I’m just of the belief that it’s a very heavy negotiation, and it’s ultimately all about the money, obviously, but also about the timing.” Smith added: “I think the takeover is going to complete in some shape or form. It’s just a question of when.”

However, by the looks of things, it is Ratcliffe who is currently leading the way, so Jassim may need to overpay as Smith mentions to push a deal through.

"At least 20 goals a season" – Arsenal told to sign Brentford star

When it comes to firepower, Arsenal aren't exactly lacking these days, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah, and Gabriel Martinelli to call on. And if those four aren't in the mood for goals, then Martin Odegaard is another who could step up for his side.

Meanwhile, they finally discovered the secret formula to fixing their backline last season, with the clue right under their noses on loan in Ligue 1 all along. Since handing William Saliba an opportunity, the Gunners have been a force to be reckoned with, finishing second in the Premier League last season and securing their return to Champions League action as a result.

You can never have too much quality, however. Or, at least that's what former Premier League player Jay Bothroyd thinks, who has urged Arsenal to add one particular Brentford player to their ranks in January.

What has Bothroyd said?

Speaking about Mikel Arteta's attacking options on Sky Sports' Saturday Social, Bothroyd urged the former Manchester City assistant to bring in a new forward who could make an impact on his side. And that forward is Ivan Toney, who will be back from his eight-month ban in January, ready to find his form once again.

Bothroyd said, via Three Added Minutes: “He scores goals, he is prolific, he is strong, he leads the line really well. If you put him in any of the big teams, he is going to score at least 20 Premier League goals a season. Great on penalties. I would love Arsenal to sign him."

Now, whilst Arsenal are unlikely to take transfer advice from a pundit, signing Toney wouldn't exactly be a bad idea. The Brentford forward may currently be banned, but when the January transfer window swings open, he will be raring to go. Once past the ban for alleged betting offences, too, this is a player who scored 20 goals in the Premier League last season, likely firing him to the top of several clubs' wishlists.

Should Arsenal sign Ivan Toney?

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Last season, Toney would have been Arsenal's top goalscorer in the Premier League, given that only Harry Kane and Erling Haaland outscored the Brentford man in England's top flight, and his partnership with current main man Bryan Mbeumo was bordering on the spectacular.

The Gunners would become a much-improved side in front of goal, and the stats only back that up even further, as per FBref. When compared to both Nketiah and Jesus last season, it is Toney who stands out in some key areas.

As you can see, perhaps most impressively, Toney actually outperformed his expected goals, whilst both Nketiah and Jesus underperformed, and should have found the back of the net more times than they did. It is Toney's clinical nature in front of goal which could prove to be all the difference, but it remains to be seen whether Bothroyd's wish will come true in January.

Sunderland could find Jack Clarke’s heir in 17 y/o whiz

Sunderland stayed strong throughout the summer transfer window as they managed to avoid cashing in on star forward Jack Clarke despite interest from the Premier League.

What's the latest on Jack Clarke's future?

Journalist Pete O'Rourke claimed at the end of last month that the English attacker is unhappy with the way that the club handled his situation throughout the off-season.

The reporter stated that the former Leeds United prospect was told that he would be allowed to move on if an offer of £10m was put on the table for his services.

However, the Black Cats rejected a bid of more than £10m from Burnley, who were promoted to the top-flight last term, and this has led to frustration from Clarke and his agent.

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

O'Rourke also added that the ex-Tottenham Hotspur speedster is one of a number of players who are not happy with the direction Sunderland are going after they decided to sell Ross Stewart to Championship rivals Southampton.

Who could replace Jack Clarke at Sunderland?

Tony Mowbray and Kristjaan Speakman may not want an unsettled player in the squad for too long and this could force them to consider Clarke's future over the next two transfer windows.

This would leave Sunderland in need of a replacement and the Black Cats head coach could possibly find an heir to the 22-year-old maestro by unearthing academy starlet Tom Watson.

Like Clarke, the 17-year-old magician, who recently signed a new three-year contract at the Stadium of Light, is a left winger who is capable of providing goals and assists from out wide at an impressive rate.

Watson showed signs of promise during the 2021/22 campaign as he racked up eight goals and one assist in 19 U18 Premier League matches.

However, the teenage talent, who journalist Josh Bunting hailed as an "inventive" ace who carries a "real threat", really hit his stride at the top end of the pitch last season.

The creative wizard produced five goals and six assists in 13 U18 appearances and earned himself a move to the U21 squad, where he went on to score two goals and provide three assists in seven games.

Watson, who made his first-team debut against Huddersfield in the Championship earlier this year, managed seven goals and nine assists in 20 academy matches throughout the 2022/23 season, which works out as a goal contribution every 1.25 clashes on average.

Clarke, meanwhile, amassed nine goals and 12 assists in 47 league games for Sunderland last term, which works out as a direct involvement every 2.24 outings on average.

Jack Clarke's Championship statistics.

Statistics via FBref

The Burnley target proved himself to be capable of delivering a consistent threat as both a scorer and a creator from a left wing position for the Black Cats, which is why his exit would leave a big hole to be filled.

However, Watson's form for the club at U18 and U21 level suggests that the potential is there for him to fill that possible gap within the squad if he can translate his performances over to a first-team setting.

Mowbray should look to offer the young dynamo more senior opportunities over the coming months to slowly bed him into the group before potentially unearthing him as Clarke's heir after the January or summer transfer windows next year.

Nasir Jamshed handed one-year ban by PCB

Pakistan batsman Nasir Jamshed has been banned for one year by the PCB after an anti-corruption tribunal found him guilty of non-cooperation in the PSL spot-fixing case.Jamshed was the fifth Pakistani player to be punished in relation to the case that tarred the start of the second season of the league this February; Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Irfan and Mohammad Nawaz were all fined and banned.Jamshed’s case had looked all along as though it might have more serious consequences, and these charges may not be the end. The PCB was adamant early on that he was a central figure behind the scam, a belief that was bolstered when Jamshed was arrested in the UK in February in connection with that investigation. He was released on bail, and the current status of his investigation in the UK remains unclear.”Let me clarify that the charge levelled upon Nasir Jamshed by the PCB so far was simply one of a failure to cooperate,” the PCB’s legal advisor Taffazul Rizvi told reporters. “The PCB has not yet charged Jamshed with spot-fixing. Today, that charge was proved, and the tribunal banned him for one year.”The ban prevents Jamshed from all forms of cricket till February 13, 2018, one year on from when he was first suspended. However, his legal troubles aren’t over yet, and more charges could be laid against him depending on the status of the UK investigation. At one point the PCB was waiting for the UK’s National Crime Agency to share evidence, but there has been no official update on that investigation since June. The NCA said at that time that the “three subjects arrested by the NCA as part of its investigation into the spot-fixing of cricket matches met with officers on 21 June and were re-bailed until October 2017.”Jamshed’s lawyer Hasan Warraich said the proceedings proved that the PCB had no proof against his client. “My client has been defamed nationally and internationally, and the reputation of the country has been damaged by the PCB’s actions. And ultimately, nothing comes of it. They kept saying they had multiple proofs against my client, and I challenged them to present those proofs to the media. They have consistently failed to do so, and nothing came of the FIA [Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency] report that they referred to.”Rizvi said, however, this case was never about corruption, but specifically about demonstrating that Jamshed had failed to cooperate with the PCB. Jamshed appeared once in front of the tribunal in August, and that too via Skype from England. At the time he was unable to travel because his passport remains with the NCA. He had also not met with PCB officials when they went to the UK before that – circumstances which the PCB argued proved his non-cooperation.”A narrative is being built that the PCB hasn’t presented any proof against Jamshed,” Rizvi said. “This case was simply a case about Jamshed’s failure to cooperate. No proof has been made public yet so that he doesn’t try to cover his tracks. If he is innocent, then shouldn’t he or his client have explained why his passport has been confiscated by the National Crime Agency in London? Why is he on bail over there?”Jamshed has not played an international game for Pakistan since the 2015 World Cup. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo earlier this year, in Birmingham, he said he had little faith in the PCB’s investigation.”We have every confidence in the National Crime Agency,” Jamshed said at the time. “But we have very little confidence in the PCB. How can we trust them? They have leaked information to the media, they have made up stories about me moving house to avoid the authorities – I’ve been here in Birmingham since January – and the tribunal they have formed to hear my case is made up of former PCB employees. How can that be independent?”
