Marcelo Bielsa’s game management was key to Leeds’ win vs Aston Villa

Leeds United won 3-0 against Aston Villa on Friday night and there’s only one man that is likely to get the plaudits for that victory.

Indeed, Patrick Bamford’s hat-trick has been the talk of the town in the wake of United’s third Premier League win of the season, and we can absolutely understand why as the Grantham-born forward was on fire against the Villans.

However, what shouldn’t be forgotten is that the game could have easily swung the other way.

Indeed, in the first 20 minutes, Villa were the better side and Leeds looked as though they were in trouble with Pascal Struijk on the pitch.

The 21-year-old looked like a walking red card, picking up his first yellow within 10 minutes before making two more dangerous challenges that could have seen him issued his marching orders.

After 20 minutes, Marcelo Bielsa had seen enough and he made a change that may have won the game for Leeds.

He brought Shackleton on for Struijk, negating the risk of the red card and allowing Leeds to once again play with the intensity and aggression in the midfield that they’re renowned for.

If Struijk had been sent off and Leeds had been forced to play over an hour with 10-men, it’s hard to envisage United running away with the game in the same manner in the second half.

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to us that Bielsa has the footballing mind to make these type of game-winning changes early on, he has been lauded as the best coach in the world in the past.

Hooking a 21-year-old in their first start in a new position after just 20 minutes may look harsh, but Bielsa needed to do it and he didn’t beat around the bush in pursuit of a victory. That’s to be expected from a man described by his own players as “relentless” and “passionate”, winning is the most important thing in football and Bielsa certainly knows how to do it.

Everton facing another Brands disasterclass if they sign Serie A star

Everton could be dealt another transfer disaster class if latest reports emerging this week are to be believed.

What’s the word?

According to Calciomercato, the Toffees are among the teams who are ‘most interested’ in Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot this summer and they appear to be the one side that could offer the best fee.

It’s also claimed that both the Serie A club and Rabiot’s agent are willing to listen to any offers that do come in for him.

Carlo Ancelotti was the man to give the Italian midfielder his professional debut at Paris-Saint Germain and it’s also suggested that the Merseysiders were keen to land him during the January transfer window.

Another disasterclass

Everton’s transfer activity this summer needs to be bang on the money if Ancelotti is to succeed at Goodison Park, but director of football Marcel Brands hasn’t had the best record in recent windows.

A £34m gamble on Alex Iwobi hasn’t paid off whatsoever with the out-of-form winger managing to score one goal all season whilst Fabian Delph and Moise Kean have hardly pulled up any trees either.

It is no secret that the Toffees’ midfield is the weakest area on the pitch with an Idrissa Gueye-like void being felt for the majority of the season, so an addition or two here is certainly along the right direction, but they shouldn’t plump for Rabiot purely because he may be available.

Tom Davies is averaging more interceptions (1.2) and clearances (0.8) per game than the Juve ace yet he’s regularly torn apart by the Everton faithful.

Even Andre Gomes is slightly better too, having managed more key passes (0.6) and assists, via WhoScored.

Rabiot’s attitude has been a major issue too. At PSG he was once suspended, leading to former sporting director Antero Henrique saying: “I find unacceptable the attitude and lack of professionalism of a player like Adrien Rabiot towards the club, his teammates and his supporters.”

It was that bad that his reputation in the French capital is that he’s a ‘spoiled child’ who’s “hated” by PSG supporters.

Brands is going to have to steer well clear of this signing, especially at a whopping reported £30m fee. It reeks of yet another disasterclass at the hands of the Dutchman.

AND in other news, Everton must sanction £12m swoop for Gerrard favourite…

Wolves fans discuss interest in Sevilla star Lucas Ocampos

Whilst Wolves’ Europa League journey may have been cut short at the quarter-final stage, fans of the Molineux side will no doubt have been watching the final with a keen eye.

The team that knocked them out, Sevilla, triumphed 3-2 over Inter on Friday evening, thus sealing yet another Europa League title in their history. And one man who certainly impressed was Lucas Ocampos.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

As per Sofascore, he had a 100% dribble success rate, provided one key pass, won four of his five ground duels and earned two free-kicks for his side too.

And with Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett claiming that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are interested in signing him this summer, Wolves fans flooded to Twitter to share their reactions about being linked with the winger.

A couple of fans seemed to take issue with Ocampos’ play-acting, slamming the fact that he spent a lot of time on the floor trying to con the ref into blowing the whistle.

Ocampos has enjoyed a terrific season with Sevilla this year, netting 17 times in 44 games across all competitions, including the match-winning strike in the clash against Wolves in the quarter-finals.

At 26, he is entering the prime years of his career, and would bring the proven quality and end product that Wolves will need next season as they attempt to qualify for European football once again.

Emiliano Buendia – Profile

Name: Emiliano Buendia

Club: Norwich City

Date of Birth: 25 December 1996

Position: Winger (Right/ Left), Centre-forward, Midfielder (Attacking)

Emiliano Buendia – his career so far

Emiliano Buendia arrived at Norwich City an already well-established albeit a very young player and has grown into an influential figure for the Canaries ever since. Of course, at the age of 23, he is yet to reach his full potential or his prime years and it feels like his development is going in the right direction at the very moment.

But the Argentine forward has had a very colourful career prior to joining up with the now Premier League outfit in the summer of 2018. Before that, he spent the entirety of his young career back in Spain, starting off at Real Madrid’s academy before marking his first senior steps with Getafe.

Of course, he wouldn’t just slot right into their first-team but had to advance through the development squads, registering appearances for their B team before making a big step-up and joining the La Liga outfit on the top level.

His first real steps with Getafe B were at the beginning of the 2014/15 season and in December 2014 he would play his first professional game in a Copa del Rey clash against SD Eibar. His La Liga debut wasn’t far away either and he made his bow on February 2015, coming on as a late substitute in a 0–1 away loss against UD Almeria.

Buendia ended up playing 34 games for their B team, scoring seven goals and assisting one more in the process as well. As far as the first-team ventures go, he can boast with three goals and one assist across 39 games played.

Interestingly enough, before he moved to England, there was one more stop he had to make. He was loaned out to Cultural Leonesa, where he mustered 42 appearances with seven goals and 12 assists, and then, upon his return to Getafe, a deal was struck that took him to Norwich City.

There, he already played a total of 71 games, scoring eight goals and providing an impressive 24 assists under his belt along the way.

Transfer latest

There seem to be quite a few transfer rumours and transfer news on the mill surrounding Norwich’s young attacking player. According to some recent reports, the likes of Atletico Madrid could be interested in acquiring his services come the summer transfer window.

Of course, with his La Liga experience and a good season over in the Premier League despite the team’s collective struggles, that particular Norwich City news doesn’t really come as a surprise. But even despite his limited return in terms of the final product, Buendia has been an outstanding performer throughout 2019/20.

Still, his current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2024 so the Canaries can be fairly confident they will at least be adequately compensated in the worst-case scenario. Only time will tell, though.

Player profile

Apart from being able to provide his teammates with assists in the final third, Buendia is an outstanding creative outlet that is often behind his team’s attacking efforts. He has a knack of sending in deadly key passes and completely unlocking the opposition’s blocks in the process.

But he can also come in clutch and chip in with goals when he’s given the chance. Usually, he will prefer to be deployed in central areas as an attacking midfielder just behind the striker but can also start out wide and then cut inside and wreak havoc.

He will often operate through his respective half-space and is great at identifying and exploiting free pockets of space in the opposition’s defensive line. But he will often make bursting runs to follow up one of his teammate’s passes and can then finish the action himself.

Still, more often than not, he will be the one creating and serving those passes on a silver platter. And the best thing is the fact he can still improve and polish all of those skills as he steadily develops with time.

Madejski Stadium

Key Information about Madejski Stadium

Madejski Stadium was opened on 22 August 1998, replacing Reading Football Club’s previous home ground of Elm Park. The 24,161 all-seater capacity stadium is located in Reading, Berkshire and it is named after the club’s chairman Sir John Madejski.

The Madejski cost around £50m to construct and comprises four stands; the Eamonn Dolan Stand, the South Stand, the East Stand, and the West Stand.

A history of Madejski Stadium

Following the Taylor Report in 1990 which made all-seater stadiums compulsory in the top two divisions of English Football for the 1994-95 season, Reading became subject to the new requirements having been crowned champions of Division Two in 1994.

It was deemed to be impractical to convert Elm Park into an all-seater stadium, therefore construction began on the Madejski in 1997. The Royals began the 1998-99 season at their new home, and the ground was opened for the first time on 22 August 1998 when Luton Town were beaten 3-0 with Grant Brebner scoring the first-ever goal at the stadium.

Following the death of academy manager Eamonn Dolan in 2016, Reading announced that the North Stand would now be renamed as The Eamonn Dolan Stand. The stand has a capacity of almost 5,000 and it includes 25 spaces for wheelchairs also. The South Stand has a capacity of 4,350, whereas the East and West Stands have well over 7,000 seats each.

Readings early days playing at Madejski Stadium were not plain sailing by any means as they were spent in Division Two. Since 1999 however, the Royals have enjoyed many fortunes, winning promotion to Division One in 2002, and racing the Premier League in 2006 for the first time in history. Madejski Stadium hosted its first international game in September 1999, when England’s under-21 side took on Luxembourg in front of almost 20,000 fans. The Madejski also staged a Rugby League World Cup match back at the start of the millennium when New Zealand thrashed the Cook Islands in autumn.

Upon arrival to the Premier League in 2006, Reading often experienced sell-out crowds at the Madejski, and as a result, the club applied for planning permission to extend the ground to around 38,000 seats. Permission had been granted; however, plans were put on hold due to Readings relegation from the top flight in 2008, before being revived in 2012 when they made a return.

Having suffered relegation once again from the top tier in 2013, plans have been left untouched. The club’s record attendance of 24,184 apparently exceeded the stadium’s stated capacity somehow on 17 November 2012 during a Premier League game against Everton.

Tickets to Watch Reading at Madejski Stadium

Adult ticket prices range from £18-24 for members of the club, over-65s can go from £13, 18-24s from £10, under-17s from £5, and under-12s for just £2. Season tickets for adults are priced from £299 which equates to just £13 per game.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Tyrone Mings’ comments on ‘Project Restart’

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have reacted to Tyrone Mings’ latest tweet on the potential restart of the Premier League.

With the recent pandemic causing a standstill to life as we know it and the footballing season, a potential return for England’s top flight has been much debated.

Potential plans to resume the 2019/2020 season have been discussed of late, whilst further claims have been made about a reluctance from clubs to potentially play at 10 neutral venues or behind closed doors.

Villa, who sit 19th in the league table and in danger of being relegated to the Championship, just one-year after gaining promotion via the play-off final, have one game in hand over their rivals.

Mings, who has been in good form this season, contributing to his call-up to the England national side and appearance under Gareth Southgate, has now given his thoughts on a return to action.

The centre-back poked fun at the fact if a top-half player says they don’t want to return to action then nothing is said. However if a player from a club near the bottom of the table speaks, then there is an overwhelming response from fans suggesting that the player in question is only saying that as they want to avoid relegation.

Reacting to Mings’ tweet, fans gave their opinion…

Do you think Villa will remain in the Premier League? Let us know in the comments section below…

Sunderland fans react to Josh Maja stating he didn’t want to leave the club

Josh Maja has been discussing his departure from Sunderland but many supporters are dissatisfied with the excuse he has given.

The striker claimed he wanted to stay at the Black Cats, which some fans would probably love to hear, but only if he received a new and improved contract, being offered the money he thought he deserved.

He also stated that the prospect of joining a team in one of Europe’s top five leagues was also very appealing, and thought that the move to Bordeaux would help to progress his career.

The 20-year-old has played 12 games this season but the Sunderland faithful still reject his view of the affair, and believe that it was all about the money for him, suggesting that he didn’t really want to stay.

It is a hard pill to swallow for some, especially as his loss put a big dent in their promotion hopes last term, with Jack Ross struggling to find the same form from his team with Will Grigg leading the line as they were eventually beaten by Charlton in the play-off final.

Here are some of the reactions to Maja’s latest comments.

Liverpool fans want to sign Timo Werner & Houssem Aouar

Liverpool fans on Twitter have been discussing players from across Europe who they want to see arrive at Anfield.

Indeed, in the absence of regular football attentions have been turning towards potential transfers, and it appears that plenty of supporters admire two players in particular.

A fan account recently asked the Reds faithful to name one player they’d sign from Ligue 1, Serie A, the Bundesliga, La Liga, the Premier League and the Championship.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Naturally, a whole host of star names from across the continent were mentioned, but there were two that were prominent in a whole host of responses.

The players in question: Timo Werner and Houssem Aouar, who are valued at £72m and £49.5m by Transfermarkt respectively.

The Bundesliga and Ligue 1 stars have both been linked with moves to Liverpool.

Liverpool’s interest in Werner, 24, has been documented for a number of months, while the club have also been credited with interest in Aouar, 21, in the past.

Both players are stars in their divisions and, given they are at relatively early stages in their careers and have plenty of scope for improvement, it’s easy to understand why supporters are so eager to see them pull on the famous red shirt next season.

Whether Jurgen Klopp will be able to bring both players to the club, however, remains to be seen.

Here’s what the fans had to say when asked who they’d like to sign…

West Brom will surely be regretting their decision over Marcus Forss now

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

West Brom’s academy.

One of the best in the country, no doubt.

Albion have been reaping the rewards from it in recent times with both Nathan Ferguson and Kyle Edwards featuring under Slaven Bilic this term.

But the Baggies hierarchy will be surely regretting the decision to let Marcus Forss leave back in 2017.

Although, this is nothing new to those up in the west Midlands.

Only this summer saw two of their brightest prospects, Louie Barry and Morgan Rogers, depart the club on their own accord to join Barcelona and Manchester City, respectively.

Yes, they could have been offered contracts much earlier to secure their futures at the Hawthorns, but ultimately it was the players’ decisions.

Forss’ exit was different. He was released following the end of his scholarship contract.

The 20-year-old subsequently joined Championship rivals Brentford, in what appears to be in similar vein to Romaine Sawyers all those years ago, just that the club have luckily got their hands on him again.

The Finland U21 international won the B team’s Player of the Year award in the summer of 2018 before going on to play for the senior side.

After bagging one goal in three appearances for the Bees this season, Forss signed a four-year contract before being sent on loan to AFC Wimbledon.

He’s since continued his goalscoring form, netting seven times in eight League One matches, resulting in reports linking him with a move to the Premier League as West Ham, Brighton & Hove Albion, Southampton and Watford appear to be all keen on securing his signature, per TEAMtalk.

It would be quite ironic if a player who was rejected by the decision-makers at the Baggies, were to make it to the promised land before the club itself did, especially via a detour to the third tier.

Albion have clearly missed out on a player with potential.

At a time where strikers have found it hard to find the net, they could maybe have done with his emerging ability.

Charlie Austin only has one goal from ten appearances, Kenneth Zohore has only bagged two penalties while Hal Robson-Kanu appears to be the super-sub having netted two off the bench this campaign.

Not only does Slaven Bilic desperately need a goalscoring striker, but they’ll also miss out on any potential fee considering he was released from the club rather than sold.

Looks like another one has slipped through West Brom’s fingers.
