Trott named in England Lions squad

The possibility of Jonathan Trott resuming his international career has increased with his inclusion in the England Lions squad to tour South Africa

The possibility of Jonathan Trott resuming his international career looks to have increased with his inclusion in the England Lions squad to tour South Africa. Trott has not played for England since returning from the Ashes in Australia last year, when he suffered a stress-related breakdown, but finished the county season in fine form for Warwickshire. The touring party also features the leading candidates to open the batting alongside Alastair Cook in the Test side. Sam Robson, Cook’s partner during the summer series against India and Sri Lanka, faces competition from Yorkshire pair Adam Lyth and Alex Lees for a place in the Test XI in the Caribbean and, beyond that, the 2015 Ashes.Trott, Robson and Kent offspinner Adam Riley have only been named in the squad for two first-class matches against South Africa A; they will be replaced by Samit Patel, Jason Roy and Stephen Parry for the five one-day matches to follow. There are seven Yorkshire players among the 17, reflecting their dominance in the County Championship. Alongside Lyth and Lees are Gary Ballance, who has taken up Trott’s heavy-scoring mantle as England’s Test No. 3, and full internationals Jonny Bairstow, Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid. Ballance was left out of the ODI party for Sri Lanka but remains in contention, with both Lions squads dependent on England selection for the tri-series in Australia that precedes the World Cup.Trott still has England aspirations

Jonathan Trott has confirmed he hopes to play Test cricket for England again, almost a year after leaving the Ashes tour with a stress-related illness. Speaking in a radio interview after his call-up to the England Lions, he said he had regained his enjoyment of the game.
“I seem to have found myself in a situation where I’m enjoying cricket again,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I still have aspirations to play for England. If I do hopefully play for England again, I’ve got to earn my place back.
“I’ve had that mentality playing for Warwickshire this year and thoroughly enjoyed my season with them, mainly for the second half of the season admittedly. Playing in successful teams like we had at the Bears this year always helps. It’s great place to be.
“I’m not looking too far ahead. Setting goals to make teams is very dangerous. A lot of the time it’s not really in your control. So at the moment I’m just looking forward to going to Pochefstroom and doing a bit of batting practice before Christmas, then heading back out with the team and feeling like a guy who’s just been picked again.”

The return of Trott to England colours is a heartening postscript to his troubles last winter. Following his departure from Australia, he suffered a relapse at the start of the domestic season that led to another enforced break from the game; but he returned to great success in the second half of the season, finishing the Royal London Cup as the leading English run-scorer to go alongside three Championship centuries for Warwickshire. In recent days Trott has appeared on the BBC’s – where he correctly identified fellow England batsman Ravi Bopara during the “Guess the Sportsman” round – and Channel 4’s coverage of the NFL, having gone to Wembley as a fan. He was recently passed fit by the ECB’s medical staff and his relaxed demeanour suggested a rediscovered sense of contentment. The inclusion of Lyth and Lees to provide competition for Robson was more predictable, with England yet to be convinced by the Australia-born Middlesex opener. Lyth finished the season as the leading first-class run-scorer in England, and winner of the Professional Cricketers’ Association and Cricket Writers’ Club player awards, while Lees matched his team-mate with twin accolades in the young player category.England do not play Test cricket again until April, their diet stuffed with ODIs ahead of the World Cup, giving the Lions tour extra significance. Three Tests are scheduled against the West Indies, although the current players dispute could potentially affect that series, followed by two more at home against New Zealand, then the Ashes – by which time Cook will hope to be certain of his opening partner.Sam Billings, Kent’s explosive wicketkeeper, will provide competition for Bairstow behind the stumps, while Somerset allrounder Craig Overton has overtaken his twin brother, Jamie, who was an unused member of England’s ODI squad in 2013. James Vince, one of the most highly regarded young batsmen on the circuit and the leading Championship run-scorer last season, is another fresh face but the selectors have not focused solely on youth, with Boyd Rankin, another casualty of England’s disastrous Ashes, also included.James Whitaker, the national selector, said: “We believe that the 17 players provisionally included across the two Lions squads for the tour to South Africa in the New Year incorporates an excellent mix of international experience alongside fresh young talent. For the likes of Sam Billings, Craig Overton and Adam Riley to be playing alongside Sam Robson, Gary Ballance and Jonny Bairstow in a Lions tour is an exciting prospect for the future of English cricket, and I am certain that all of the players will learn a great deal from the experience.”Jonathan Trott’s exceptional form and run scoring exploits for Warwickshire at the end of the summer has resulted in his selection for the first-class fixtures at the beginning of the tour. Congratulations to him and to all of the players selected.”The team will be coached by Sussex’s Mark Robinson, with former England team director Andy Flower, now the ECB’s elite performance director, likely to be involved. The Lions will play the first-class matches at the start of the month-long tour, in mid-January, before switching to 50-over cricket.Separately, the ECB have also facilitated a return to coaching for Ottis Gibson, who left his job in charge of the West Indies in August. Gibson, who previously worked with England under Flower, will assist the England Performance Programme fast-bowling camp in South Africa before Christmas. Robert Croft, the former Glamorgan and England offspinner, is expected to work with young spin bowlers on scholarships in Sri Lanka.England Lions first-class squad: Jonny Bairstow, Gary Ballance (both Yorkshire), Sam Billings (Kent), Jack Brooks, Alex Lees, Adam Lyth(all Yorkshire), Craig Overton (Somerset), Liam Plunkett (Yorkshire), Boyd Rankin (Warwickshire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Adam Riley (Kent), Sam Robson (Middlesex), Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire), James Vince (Hampshire)England Lions one-day squad: Jonny Bairstow, Gary Ballance, Sam Billings, Jack Brooks, Alex Lees, Adam Lyth, Craig Overton, Stephen Parry (Lancashire), Samit Patel (Nottinghamshire), Liam Plunkett, Boyd Rankin, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy (Surrey), James Vince

É Deus me abençoando e me capacitando.

Rajasthan plummet to 35 all out

Rajasthan’s one-day form touched a new low on Tuesday as the team was bowled out for 35 against Railways in Nagpur

If Rajasthan’s build-up to the domestic season, mired in uncertainty due to Rajasthan Cricket Association’s internal tussles and those with the BCCI, was bad, then their start to the campaign has been worse.Rajasthan’s one-day form touched a new low on Tuesday as the team was bowled out for 35 against Railways in Nagpur. It was the second-lowest total in India’s domestic one-day cricket, after Saurashtra’s 34 against Mumbai in 1999-00. However, the duration of the Rajasthan innings, which lasted just 15.3 overs, was the lowest for a completed innings in Indian domestic cricket.Railways, whose new-ball bowlers Anureet Singh and Amit Mishra had claimed five wickets each, then overhauled the target of 36 in just 5.3 overs, handing Rajasthan one of the biggest losses in one-day cricket. The demoralising loss came on the back of comprehensive losses against Vidarbha and Uttar Pradesh earlier in the tournament.Despite being disappointed with his batsmen, Rajasthan captain Pankaj Singh wasn’t overtly critical of his team-mates. “There is not much one can say when the team suffers from such a huge loss,” a dejected Pankaj told ESPNcricinfo. “Obviously everything went wrong with our batting. I would attribute it to lack of application. Both the Railways bowlers bowled well but when none of the batsmen try to apply, then you are bound to be bowled out cheaply.”Railways captain Mahesh Rawat lavished praise on his bowlers. “Yesterday, we played at the same ground and both teams scored in the range of 240-plus. So you can’t simply blame the pitch,” he said. “The pitch was fine and there were no demons. Our opening bowlers were brilliant from the start. We have young Bilaspur boy Amit, who bowls outswing at a decent pace and we had Anureet, who is a seasoned campaigner at this level.”The areas that our new ball bowlers bowled was brilliant and it became difficult for their batsmen. They wilted under pressure created by our bowlers.”The first four batsmen in the Rajasthan batting line-up fell for a duck and at 17 for 8 in the 12th over, Rajasthan were in danger of being bowled out for the lowest total in domestic one-day cricket. Robin Bist, the senior-most Rajasthan batsman in the one-day squad, agreed with his captain. “We played very bad cricket,” Bist told ESPNcricinfo. “They bowled very well, one or two balls were exceptional but we didn’t apply ourselves. Most of us lost our wickets due to poor shot selection.”Rajasthan players were in danger of missing out on the domestic season as late as the first week of October when the court appointed selection committees and directed BCCI to field the team as Rajasthan XI. As a result, after playing a selection tournament before Diwali, the Rajasthan team had a short 10-day camp in Jaipur before entering the tournament.Still, Pankaj refused to blame a lack of preparation for the recent results. “We had a good camp and some of us played in the Duleep Trophy as well so we cannot say we were not prepared,” Pankaj said. “Anyway, traditionally Rajasthan have struggled in the one-day format, so I just hope we can end the campaign with a victory in our last game and learn from our mistakes going into the Ranji Trophy.”The last time Rajasthan qualified for the all-India knockouts of the one-day competition was in 2006-07 when they lost to Mumbai in the final. Since then, despite winning two Ranji Trophy titles, Rajasthan have failed to finish in top two of the Central Zone one-day league.Even Bist, who along with Pankaj and Ashok Menaria helped Central Zone with their first Duleep title in ten seasons last week, agreed with Pankaj but said that due to a lack of match practice the team was still trying to gel. “The more a set of boys plays together the sooner it gels. Since we missed all the pre-season preparatory tournaments, we are aware that it would take us a little while for this new team to get together,” Bist said. This is the first time in seven years that Rajasthan are entering a domestic season without the services of a professional. As a result, the Rajasthan team is full of new faces, most of whom have been competing for places in the team. The only positive for Rajasthan during this year’s league has been Pankaj’s spell of 6 for 50 in their opener against Vidarbha. It was the best bowling spell by a Rajasthan bowler in one-day cricket, bettering Shamsher Singh’s 5 for 26 against Vidarbha in 1998-99. “Records and achievements don’t mean anything if the team isn’t doing well,” Pankaj said. “I just hope that we can lift ourselves in the coming season. It’s going to be a long season and it’s just the beginning. We just have to be positive about our game and give our best.”

SL hope to solve ODI opener riddle in NZ Tests

Sri Lanka head coach Marvan Atapattu has said that the tour of New Zealand was always going to be a challenge for his team, but welcomed it as a timely one that will help them prepare for the World Cup

Mahela Jayawardene remains an option for Sri Lanka at the top, at the World Cup, but they are yet to decide on whom they want to partner Tillakaratne Dilshan•AFP

Sri Lanka head coach Marvan Atapattu has said that the tour of New Zealand was always going to be a challenge for his team, but welcomed it as a timely one that will help them prepare for the World Cup.”Touring New Zealand is always going to be a challenge with the weather and the wickets. It is up to us to adapt and to be at our best. It’s a challenge for us like all other teams coming to Sri Lanka,” said Atapattu ahead of Sri Lanka’s two-day warm-up match against a New Zealand XI. “It’s a timely tour though and it’s a great opportunity for us to experience and have some game time in those conditions.”Sri Lanka play three of their six World Cup group matches in New Zealand, with the remaining three in Australia.Atapattu said Sri Lanka will make use of the two Tests to find a suitable opening partner for Tillakaratne Dilshan for the World Cup. In the recent past Upul Tharanga and Kusal Perera have been tried out in that position without much success. Sri Lanka have Mahela Jayawardene as an option, but they are still keen to find a regular opener failing which they will settle for a make-shift one.”We were thinking of having a specialised opener, especially with this two balls thing, in New Zealand,” Atapattu said. “We had a very settled middle-order before Mahela opened in the last two games against England. We were trying to give it a chance. Along with the selection committee we had long discussions to have somebody else, so that we don’t disturb the middle-order.”But there came a time we wanted to see Mahela. He was fantastic; although he didn’t make big runs the little time that he spent showed that he was well equipped. Mahela could bat anywhere at any given stage and his figures will tell you that.”It’s always an option. Depending on the surface and on the runs we’ll have to chase and the opposition, Mahela can come and open at any time. If all goes well, certainly Mahela’s option would be there but we have at least one Test match to decide whom we want in our squad. It could be an opener or a middle-order batsman.”The deadline for teams to finalise their 15 for the World Cup is around January 8, and although Sri Lanka has time to squeeze in the two Tests prior to that date, they are not leaving their decision till the end – the last Test is scheduled to end in Wellington on January 7. The first Test begins on Boxing Day in Christchurch, the venue where Sri Lanka will open their World Cup campaign, against New Zealand, on February 14.Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva are Sri Lanka’s regular Test openers. Either one of them could be in the running for a World Cup spot depending on their performance. Karunaratne was named in Sri Lanka’s squad of 15 for the sixth and seventh ODIs against England, although he didn’t make it to the final XI.The New Zealand Test series will be the first Sri Lanka will be playing following the retirement of former captain Jayawardene from Test cricket in August. His position at No. 4 will in all probability go to Lahiru Thirimanne, who filled that slot when Jayawardene was forced to miss the two Tests against Bangladesh in March 2013 with a finger injury. Thirimanne made full use of that opportunity to score his maiden Test hundred – 155 not out in Galle.Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, whose presence in the Test series is doubtful, Kumar Sangakkara and Prasanna Jayawardene are the only three players in the Test team with any previous experience of playing in New Zealand. The focus, though, remains on the one-day series.”We’ll stick to our plans in finding the 15 that we want for the World Cup,” Atapattu said. “Winning games will always help our plans but we have passed the stage where we’ve tried everybody and we have pruned our squad down to 30. In the 30 we know whom we want in our 15 except for one or two places which we hope to fill during the Test series.”The main task would be to manage players and get them to peak at the right time, which is February 14. We have named a squad of 30 and we have had a plan along with the selection committee. Although we had a very bad series in India, the boys have shown how they can bounce back and we have stuck to our plans, which is the greatest thing. The seven matches we played against England with 17 players, that obviously tells you that we have not gone haywire with our plans.”The Indian tour was a disaster nobody wanted that result, the easiest thing we could have done is play low and go through the motions. But we understood there was a point to prove especially in home conditions and that we were up for it. I saw within the camp the level of interest, motivation and morale was always high. We played our best cricket in the final ODI in India and we continued with that in the home series against England.”

Contra o Nova Iguaçu, o time acionado por Mauricinho, vice-líder do Brasileiro Sub-20, foi: Hugo Souza, Matheus França, Habraão (Gabriel Noga), Natan, Ramon; Luiz Henrique (Lucas Gabriel), Richard Rios (Pedro Arthur), Denilson (Lázaro); Wendel, Gomes (Daniel Cabral) e Rodrigo Muniz (João Gabriel).

Lawrence swaps stages in new life

Syd Lawrence has a change of stage

Coaches, city workers, coffee shop owners – all occupations of retired first-class cricketers. But David “Syd” Lawrence, once a fearsome fast bowler for England, has deviated somewhat in his second life.David Lawrence’s career was cut short by a cruel knee injury•Getty Images

Lawrence is still performing in public but has swapped cricket’s 22-yards for the stages of the bodybuilding circuit. And now he his not judged by the accuracy of his deliveries but the definition of his muscles.Lawrence’s career was effectively ended by a harrowing knee injury in Wellington in 1992 and he admits the cruel turn of fate was tough to deal with for a long time after he had retired: “You can’t look back – it just wasn’t meant to be,” he said. But that competitive edge has never left him and he is now training harder than ever, with morning gym sessions completed before 9am and a diet that puts his food intake as a cricketer to shame.”Even when I was playing cricket I was always in the gym,” Lawrence told ESPNcricinfo. “People said I spent too much time in the gym. But I was probably ahead of my time, if you look at cricketers today, they spend a hell of a lot of time in the gym.”If someone throws me the ball at half five on a hot day, that’s physically hard work. It’s very demanding. Fast bowling is one of the hardest things you can do. You have to be mentally very strong as well.”But bodybuilding is pretty tough. Not just the training but to be in the best shape for competition is about 14 weeks of hard dieting. And that is mental pressure.”He has enjoyed success, becoming over-40s South West champion, over 20 years on from the end of his playing career.Lawrence took 515 first-class wickets at 32.07 in just over a decade with Gloucestershire. “1985 was probably one of my best years,” he said. “I opened the bowling with Courtney Walsh, we finished second in the Championship – and should have won it. The partnership between me and Courtney was frightening for so many people. They didn’t want to play against us.”His England debut came in 1988 against Sri Lanka at Lord’s but it would be three more years until he gained a run in the side. His 18 wickets across five Tests included dismissing Viv Richards for the final time in Test cricket – at The Oval in 1991.Lawrence was one of a number of British West Indians in county cricket. But there has been a remarkable drop off in recent years. It is a concern for Lawrence: “There’s a massive problem with English West Indian kids – they’re just not interested in the game. And they have no role models. What we need is West Indians born in Britain to be able to fly the flag.”
