Wicketkeeper Tim Paine has stood down as Tasmania’s vice-captain and been replaced by Alex Doolan. Paine’s leadership potential has long been recognised and there was a time when he was considered a potential future national captain, but his own disappointment with his form over the summer has left him wanting to concentrate more on his own game.Paine, 29, scored 473 Sheffield Shield runs at 31.53 during the 2013-14 summer and is still searching for his second century at first-class level, having not reached triple-figures since he made 215 in October 2006. He has played four Tests and 26 one-day internationals for Australia but has not represented his country since early 2011, having struggled with finger injuries.”I made the decision to step down so that I can spend more time concentrating on my own game” Paine said. “I didn’t have the season I would have liked with the bat and as a result I made the decision to step aside and let somebody else take the reins. I’ve given as much as I can to the role and it will be good to have someone with different ideas to lead the team.”Doolan, 28, will step up as deputy to Tasmania’s captain George Bailey, although his availability for the state will depend in part upon his ability to retain his place as the incumbent Test No.3. The presence of Doolan in the Test team and Bailey in Australia’s shorter formats should mean that one of them will be present for the Tigers at most times.”I’m really looking forward to working more closely with George and [deputy vice-captain] Xavier Doherty as well as our coaching staff,” Doolan said. “I’m excited to also possibly have the opportunity to lead the Tigers when George is off representing Australia. We have a fantastic group of talented players and I have no doubt we can continue to challenge for one-day and first-class titles next season and into the future.”

Royal Challengers' slim hopes on the line

Royal Challengers face a must-win match against Knight Riders, a team that can afford to lose a game and yet qualify for the playoffs.

Start time 1600 local (1030 GMT)With Robin Uthappa around, Knight Riders don’t need a Batman•BCCI

Big PictureThe IPL bandwagon finally rolled into Kolkata on May 20, and with the backing of the country’s largest crowd, Kolkata Knight Riders started their home campaign with a rout of Chennai Super Kings, winning their fifth successive game. That result took Knight Riders to fourth place, with 14 points in 12 games, creating a clear divide between the top and bottom halves of the points table. Their opponents for Thursday’s game, Royal Challengers Bangalore, are a couple of rungs below them with 10 points from 12 games. With 14 being the most points any team in the bottom half of the table can now aspire to reach, 16 has become the magic number that teams like Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals will want to achieve. If Knight Riders and Royals lose all their upcoming games, and Royal Challengers, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians win all of theirs, there could be five teams tied on 14 points, making for a thrilling last leg of the tournament. However, if Knight Riders win this game, they will move onto 16 points, thereby taking some sting out of the tournament. A loss will be the end of the road for Royal Challengers, leaving Royals, Sunrisers and Mumbai Indians to fight for the only remaining playoff spot. The moods in the two camps will be very different coming into this game. Knight Riders will be upbeat, with five wins on the trot and their last two games at home. Royal Challengers, on the other hand, have won only two of their last five games and will be reeling from the close defeat to Sunrisers in their last outing.Form guideKolkata Knight Riders: WWWWW (completed games, most recent first)
Royal Challengers Bangalore: LWWLLWhere they standKolkata Knight Riders: Fourth, with 14 points from 12 games
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Sixth, with 10 points from 12 gamesPrevious encounterThe previous clash between these two teams could well be dubbed the ‘Chris Lynn Show’. Lynn had an 80-run partnership with Jacques Kallis, forging a recovery before Royal Challengers restricted Knight Riders to 150 on Sharjah’s mirror-like strip. The Royal Challengers batsmen had all but bagged the game and needed nine runs to win off the last over with AB de Villiers at the crease. Four balls into the final over, Lynn’s Fosbury Flop on the boundary line dismissed de Villiers and set up a two-run jailbreak for Knight Riders.Watch out for…Robin Uthappa has scored 392 runs in the India leg of IPL 2014, with no other batsman having scored even 300. He has eight 40+ scores in this tournament, of which seven have come in consecutive games. Ending this run of astonishing form is bound to be one of Royal Challengers’ biggest tests. The death overs in this match are likely to throw up a good contest. Royal Challengers’ average run rate in the last five overs of an innings in IPL 2014 is 11.01 – every other team scores at less than 10 runs per over during this period. Knight Riders on the other hand, are the most miserly bowling team during this phase of the innings, conceding only 8.12 runs per over.Stats and trivia Royals Challengers’ recent IPL record against Knight Riders is poor. They have only one win in the last five games between the two sides. Chris Gayle and Jacques Kallis have turned out for both Royal Challengers and Knight Riders in the IPL and they are also the top run-scorers in matches between the two teams. Counting the runs scored for both teams, Gayle has 420, while Kallis has 356. Gautam Gambhir has scored the most runs against Royal Challengers in the IPL. Of his 454 runs against them, 169 have come while playing for Delhi Daredevils and the rest for Knight Riders. Royal Challengers have found Sunil Narine stifling. While he has taken only six wickets against them in the IPL, he has conceded 4.18 runs per over, while giving away more than five an over against all current IPL teams. Quotes”I was never low on confidence. There were times when I was sent in to bat when there were just two or three overs to spare. At that time, if I failed to score, everyone got a feeling that I am low on confidence and out of form.”
“I tend to unknowingly elongate my stride sometimes during my run-up and [Dan sir] keeps an eye out for that and corrects it. [Murali sir] always tells me to bowl confidently, and most importantly, have fun while bowling.”

Rasool breaks the jinx for Jammu & Kashmir

Parvez Rasool, who played his first match for India in Dhaka on Sunday, finally “broke the ice” and brought an end to the long wait in Jammu & Kashmir of seeing their best cricketer graduate to the top level

India’s three-ODI sojourn to Bangladesh may just be a footnote in the international calendar but its relevance had been heightened in the state of Jammu & Kashmir once the team for the tour was announced. Parvez Rasool, who played his first match for India in Dhaka on Sunday, finally “broke the ice” and brought an end to the long wait in J&K to see the best cricketer from the valley graduate to the highest level.Rasool didn’t have to wait long to make impact; he struck on the first ball of his third over with the wicket of Anamul Haque to ease the early nerves that usually follow a much-awaited new arrival. Another wicket in the day must have made it doubly sweet.”It is a proud moment. There was a jinx which wasn’t breaking somehow,” Samiullah Beigh, the J&K fast bowler, told ESPNcricinfo. “We always felt that somebody should break the ice so that cricketers can flow out of this part of the world. There was a mental block that our boys could only make it to a certain level – to zonals or maximum to India A level. We were not able to push it past the glass ceiling. That ceiling has been removed now.”We are all very happy about it. The social media, the news reports that will come out tomorrow about Parvez Rasool making Jammu & Kashmir proud … there has been a buzz about this.”The former J&K seamer and the current coach, Abdul Qayoom, who has been an inspiration for a lot of J&K cricketers including Rasool, saw the debut as a harbinger, a motivator, for the current and the next crop of state’s cricketers. Coming through the ranks of the state cricket structure, Rasool has been close to most.”The cricketers see him as the same Parvez who used to play with them,” Qayoom said. “He has the same two hands, same pair of legs. So now it makes it clear for youngsters that if they play well, there is no politics standing in their way.”Since his selection in the India A squad in January 2013, Rasool’s default introduction on anything written about him has always mentioned him as the “first cricketer from J&K to..”, almost making him the de facto face of state cricket. The horrifying memories of 2009 had long been shelved. But the last step, that of making it to the national side, had been eluding him.He made it to the India squad that played an ODI series, similar in import to the current one in Bangladesh, in Zimbabwe last September. Despite winning the series, the team management’s decision to keep him out of the XI left Rasool, and his team-mates in the state, disappointed. Qayoom ensured he didn’t let the despair set in. He told Rasool, “You are the one in limelight. (Don’t lose your heart). Maybe the selectors wanted to see something extra in you, so you should work harder to rectify those shortcomings. They should see the difference.”Rasool did stick to the path of self-improvement, following up his excellent 2012-13 season for J&K with solid performances with both bat and ball in the 2013-14 season, during which he led the side too. He scored 594 runs that included a century in the quarter-final against Punjab and ended the season with 33 wickets. The team took all the limelight that has come with Rasool as a boost, broke through to the Ranji knockouts this season and ensured an entry to the more difficult pool next season. The state cricket association, JKCA, has also buckled up and is organising early camps, five months before Ranji, something unusual in the state.”Even till two years ago, we didn’t use to get any cricket in the off season and were picked straight for the Ranji Trophy,” Beigh said. “The new (enthusiasm) that is visible both among the players and the JKCA will have far-reaching consequences.”

Miles and Norwell set last-wicket record

A record Gloucestershire last-wicket stand between Craig Miles and Liam Norwell delayed Worcestershire’s win and brought much delight at the Cheltenham Festival

Paul Edwards at Cheltenham College23-Jul-2014
ScorecardEven Jack Shantry was overshadowed by a record last-wicket stand•PA Photos

When Gloucestershire supporters arrived at Cheltenham, all the talk was of recovery and resurrection. This was appropriate, given that the College Ground is overlooked by both a hospital and a chapel. It is unknown whether director of cricket John Bracewell does, indeed, possess thaumaturgical powers, but by the end of a day full of wonders there were many excited Cheltonians claiming that tail-enders Craig Miles and Liam Norwell were miracle-workers of a sort, even if they could not prevent Worcestershire’s eight-wicket victory. The reasoning behind such a bizarre contention can be found by a swift glance at the game’s scorecard and we should be in no doubt that both Miles and Norwell will be asked to autograph plenty of these over the years.Coming together with their side on 152 for 9, Gloucestershire’s last pair added 137 which is now a 10th wicket record for the county. Norwell’s career-best 78 – he tripled his previous mark – is the highest score ever made by a Gloucestershire No11 while Miles’ 62 also bettered his previous best first-class effort. However, the nature of the partnership was even more remarkable than its statistics. What began as a cheerful thrash gradually developed into a proper stand between two cricketers who played straight, hit through the line and made very few errors. Worcestershire skipper Daryl Mitchell was forced to use his occasional bowlers but none of it affected Miles and Norwell’s cool approach to their task.It almost came as a surprise when Charlie Morris defeated Norwell’s back-foot defensive shot shortly after the tea interval that few spectators thought they would be on the ground to enjoy. The fact that Worcestershire batsmen made little fuss about scoring the 51 runs they needed to clinch the victory, albeit at the cost of both openers, did not detract from the sheer entertainment that had been served up to a festival crowd which had not remotely expected such glorious fun.”Our first job was to make it as hard as possible for them to win but when it became clear that we could make them bat again that became our goal,” said Norwell. “I played a few rash shots but Craig kept me in line and I think he’s a good enough batsman to go in at seven or eight later in his career.”Yet while so much of the last day’s applause was showered on Gloucestershire’s last pair, the 23 points for victory were collected by Worcestershire, whose win takes them 43 points clear of Surrey having played one game fewer.Mitchell’s men are in ruthless mood these days and you would now get very poor odds on them winning their league title. They seem to be sailing towards promotion as smoothly and serenely as the hot air balloons that float above Leckhampton Hill. The win will be particularly satisfying for Mitchell and Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes given that it was achieved without Saeed Ajmal, whose 63 wickets have been widely cited as explaining the county’s success. The latter argument surely gives insufficient credit to bowlers like Jack Shantry whose left-arm round the wicket medium-fast bowling removed four Gloucestershire batsmen on the final day of this game and took his season’s bag of wickets to 40.The awkwardness of facing Shantry has now been compounded by the fact that he now seems likely to be brought on after another left-arm seamer Mitchell McClenaghan, who operates in the classic over the wicket fashion and at a considerably greater pace than his new colleague.McClenaghan’s short hostile spells were very impressive in this game until Norwell took a liking to whacking him over the top and he marked his first-class debut for Worcestershire by taking the first two wickets on the third morning.Nightwatchman Tom Smith wafted at a rapid delivery but only edged a catch to Ben Cox while Will Tavare attempted a pull but merely skied the ball towards square leg. Morris jogged round to complete the catch.Already the Worcestershire attack scented prey and skipper Mitchell offered his bowlers every support, on one occasion even giving McClenaghan an 8:1 field including a fly slip. Yet this wicket remained one on which good batsmen could play their shots, a contention proved by Alex Gidman who took heavy toll of Joe Leach and had creamed seven sweet boundaries in 37 runs when he played down the wrong line to Shantry. Two overs later the left-armer – watty-handed they call it in these parts – produced a fine ball to induce an edge from Hamish Marshall and Gloucestershire were 84 for 5 half an hour before lunch. The morning had already illustrated the home top order’s problems in this game: when they got in, they could rarely stay in.The home team’s plight barely affected the mood on the ground during the luncheon interval. Martial tunes were provided by musicians from the Royal Logistics Corps. Gloucestershire may have been sinking but the band played on. In front of the marquees at the College Lawn End a flotilla of panamas floated on a pastel sea.In the distance Cleeve Hill relaxed in summer’s warm haze, a study in green framed by blue. At the Chapel End men bought Wisdens and talked of stocks and shares. Two balls after lunch Will Gidman clipped Morris straight to Shantry at square leg. Ian Cockbain and Benny Howell both fell to Shantry shortly afterwards and when Adam Rouse was caught by Mitchell off Joe Leach, people prepared to take their leave. Little did they know that the party was just getting going.
