Heat win to keep semi-final hopes alive

Astute bowling from Alister McDermott followed lively innings from Daniel Vettori and Roelof van der Merwe to shut out the Melbourne Renegades and keep the Brisbane Heat in touch with a semi-final spot

Astute bowling from Alister McDermott followed lively innings from Daniel Vettori and Roelof van der Merwe to shut out the Melbourne Renegades and keep the Brisbane Heat in touch with a semi-final spot under the roof at the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne.Aaron Finch made a strong-armed 72 in the Renegades’ chase but had far too little support in a result that left four teams on four points – all with some chance of unseating the Melbourne Stars to claim the last berth in the top four.Shahid Afridi and Aaron Heal had delivered some arresting overs of spin for Melbourne to reduce the Heat to 5 for 75, but Vettori and van der Merwe added 72 in 42 balls to revive the innings, and the visiting bowlers were disciplined enough to hold out the hosts.McDermott showed tremendous control, and was well supported by Vettori, Daniel Christian and Michael Neser, who also claimed three wickets. Vettori was named Man Of The Match for his runs and tidy overs. The Renegades had made a change to the batting order for their chase, promoting Afridi to open. His partner Brad Hodge did not last long, swinging in ungainly fashion at Christian and having his stumps spread-eagled, but Afridi connected with a handful of telling blows to help Finch take 19 from van der Merwe’s first over.McDermott intervened to end Afridi’s stay on 26, via a catch at midwicket, and Andrew McDonald followed soon after when his drive failed to clear long-on. Those wickets quelled the hosts’ momentum, and a big over was required.Finch duly delivered in Nathan Hauritz’s second over, though the bowler did not help himself by serving up a front-foot no-ball – the unforgivable sin for a slow bowler. The no-ball and the free hit both sailed over the straight boundary, and three sixes in the over, plus a wide, a single and a two, meant 23 runs in the space of six legal deliveries.Neser stemmed the scoring in the very next over, accounting for Nathan Reardon and Abdul Razzaq to leave Finch seemingly short of batting support. Glenn Maxwell, injured in the field, struck a pair of flat boundaries before skying a catch, and it was left to the former South Australia gloveman Graham Manou to accompany Finch.Manou showed more experience and sense than some of his predecessors, giving Finch plenty of strike, and the younger man responded with runs. In the 17th over he swung van der Merwe to the midwicket fence, where Chris Lynn took a fine catch but had to throw the ball away before he went over the rope.Well as Finch had played, the run-rate continued to climb, and from the final ball of the 18th over he sought a risky second run that became fatal when Andrew Robinson managed to hit the stumps from long-on. Manou could only find the boundary with difficulty, and 17 were required from McDermott’s final over – far too many against a fast-medium bowler putting the ball more or less where he willed it.Batting first, Heat were handed a frightful start when Nannes swung the ball late from wide of the crease to open up Robinson and flick his off stump. The No. 3 Lynn was more solid, and Matthew Hayden blustered away to some effect without ever quite timing the ball as he once used to.A passage of crafty spin followed, with Heal deceiving Hayden and Afridi collecting the next three wickets in the space of four balls, spread over two overs. His googly was particularly effective, bowling Peter Forrest between bat and pad then pinning Christian in front of middle stump. At 5 for 74 the Heat may well have subsided quickly, but Vettori and van der Merwe provided an intelligent partnership of 72 from 42 deliveries. Vettori’s 40 featured some deft flicks over the legside field, and van der Merwe followed suit with a pair of sixes of his own. Afridi’s last over went for 14 runs, denting his figures considerably.A few more big hits meant the Heat had piled up 97 from their second 10 overs, reaching a far better total than had seemed possible at the halfway point of the innings.

Pedrinho 'ignora' PSG e diz: 'Quero fazer história no Corinthians'

– Estamos tentando o resultado positivo.

Clarke hopeful quicks will be fresh for Adelaide

Michael Clarke is hoping Australia’s fast bowlers will be fresh for the Adelaide Test after they wrapped up victory in Perth within two and a half days

Michael Clarke is hoping Australia’s fast bowlers will be fresh for the Adelaide Test after they wrapped up victory in Perth within two and a half days. The comprehensive win not only delivered the Border-Gavaskar Trophy into Australian hands, it gave the players an eight-day break to rest after their work in oppressively hot conditions in Perth. While the Indians will need that time to regroup following three heavy defeats and the loss of their captain MS Dhoni to a suspension for slow over-rates, Australia can enjoy the time off. The offspinner Nathan Lyon will return in Adelaide at the expense of one of the four fast men, but there appears no need to rest either Peter Siddle or Ben Hilfenhaus, both of whom have toiled tirelessly in the first three Tests.”Two-and-a-half-day Test matches help, that’s for sure,” Clarke said. “I honestly believe that’s probably saved a few of us to be honest. The distance the Test matches have gone gives you an extra day, in this case a few days off, so with a good week before we even get to Adelaide, I’d imagine they [the fast bowlers] will be very fresh again and looking forward to playing that Test match.”I think the break will be wonderful for us. I think it’s important we enjoy this victory again. You need to celebrate your success as a team. You’ve got to enjoy this time together and we’ll do that. But allowing everybody to go back home for a few days and freshen up before we get to Adelaide, which is generally a tougher wicket to bowl on, I think it will do us the world of good.”Following the innings victory at the WACA, Clarke was adamant that Australia would not treat the Adelaide Oval Test as a dead rubber, despite the 3-0 series scoreline. At least two members of the batting line-up, Shaun Marsh and Brad Haddin, will be desperate for runs in the fourth Test after a lean series so far, while Clarke knows his team has a long way to go before their goals have been achieved.”Our goal is to be the No.1 team in the world and we aren’t there yet,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of work still to do and that starts in Adelaide.”[There’s] no such thing as a dead rubber for me. We haven’t achieved much at this stage. We should be very proud, don’t get me wrong, to have beaten the No.2-ranked Test team in the world, in this series. We should be very proud of that. But we’ve got a lot of work to do before we’ll be satisfied.”All the same, temporary satisfaction has arrived thanks to the manner in which the Australians have dismantled India in this series. For the second match in succession, the Australians needed to bat only once in order to secure victory, a win that came not only to the consistency of their bowlers but also the wonderful 214-run opening stand between David Warner and Ed Cowan. The pitch was not an easy one on which to get in – Virat Kohli was the only man besides Warner and Cowan to score a half-century, and cracks made life difficult in the second innings for India. Clarke said that made the efforts of Australia’s openers all the more critical, while it had been important for the bowlers to ensure Australia were not set a chase.”I think a lot of credit needs to go to not only Davey, who batted unbelievably well out there, but also his partner Ed Cowan,” Clarke said. “As an opening partnership they played really well in pretty tough batting conditions. They made it look easy but there was certainly enough out there for the bowlers, as we’ve seen today. Once again our bowlers deserve a lot of credit. To be able to get such a good batting order out again and take 20 wickets I think they deserve a lot of credit.”We made a pact yesterday that our bowlers should not have to send our batters back out on that wicket in this second innings. That’s very pleasing that we were able to stick to our word today. We continue to show more consistency as a team, which is very pleasing. Our execution of our skills in all three facets of the game is getting more consistent. It’s a reward for the hard work we’ve been putting in behind the scenes.”

Pakistan can be best in the world – Mohsin Khan

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s interim coach, believes Misbah-ul-Haq’s side has the ability to become the best team in the world following its second successive Test victory over England

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s interim coach, believes Misbah-ul-Haq’s side has the ability to become the best team in the world following its second successive Test victory over England.Pakistan’s 72-run win in Abu Dhabi gave them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series over the No.1 Test side. It also meant that Pakistan had won four series in a row. Mohsin did warn, however, that England’s struggles on Asian pitches illustrated how hard it can be for teams to adapt to a foreign environment and said Pakistan had “a lot to prove” in overseas conditions.”I think this team has the capacity to become the world’s best team,” Mohsin said. “Our target should be to gradually come in the top three in both Tests and one-day cricket, and then gradually go to world number one.”Now we have to perform when we play in other parts of the world. We have a lot to prove. When we go to England, our batsmen struggle against swing and seam bowling just as England struggle against spin. But give our bowlers credit: it needs skill to exploit rivals’ weaknesses. Our spinners bowled well.”Mohsin also praised Misbah’s leadership and credited the warm relationship between captain and coach as a key ingredient in Pakistan’s success. “He is a very good captain,” Mohsin said, “and I have a wonderful rapport with him. He gives me respect as coach and as his senior and I give him respect as captain, so it is a mutual thing.”We make a game plan and take inputs from senior and junior players. Maybe a junior player has something good and wise to tell us. Misbah respects my experience and as coach it is my duty to support him as he is to make the team fight. He is doing that.”When I became coach I knew that this team had talent in abundance. My first priority was to make them mentally and physically strong and that was on display when Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq batted. We won a lost match on Saturday and the kind of belief and self confidence this team has shown is great.”Mohsin’s own future remains unclear. He was only appointed as interim coach after Waqar Younis stepped down in September 2011 and it is still anticipated that Dav Whatmore will win the position on a full time basis after the limited-overs section of the series against England is completed. The manner in which the Pakistan players lifted Mohsin upon their shoulders in the immediate aftermath of the victory in Abu Dhabi, however, spoke volumes for the high regard in which he is held by them.”I am proud of my team and the moment when we won and then the playerslifted me and celebrated the win, that was a joy to behold,” Mohsin said. “It showed team spirit and the unity in joy. That was the biggest gift I can have from my players. Our actions are louder than words and I hope that this good work goes on and on.”
