Dolar and Mushfiqur make it 4-1

An incisive opening spell from Dolar Mahmud rocked Zimbabwe, and though they recovered to post 210, it was easily chased down by Bangladesh thanks to Mushfiqur Rahim’s 98

After three consecutive run-fests, the bowlers finally had their say. Zimbabwe won the toss but thoughts of repeating the 312 they posted in the fourth match were undone by an incisive opening spell from Dolar Mahmud. A lower-order revival pushed the score to 210 but it wasn’t enough to challenge Bangladesh, who stormed to a 4-1 series win thanks to Mushfiqur Rahim’s 98.It turned out to be a good toss to lose for Bangladesh, who were hardly tested with the kind of swing and seam movement that startled their opponents. The conditions this morning redressed the balance between bat and ball in this series. It was clear from the outset that hitting through the line wasn’t going to be easy. Zimbabwe didn’t respect the conditions enough, and slipped to 69 for 6 in the 14th over. The game was all but sealed.Vusi Sibanda’s embarrassing dismissal just showed how clueless Zimbabwe were against the moving ball. Facing Dolar, he shuffled across, assuming it would be a leg-side wide, but the ball swung back towards him and sent the leg stump cartwheeling a few yards. The frustration of having to earn boundaries, perhaps, saw Charles Coventry – a record- breaker in the previous match – out before he could open his account. Dolar then bowled Malcolm Waller through the gate with an inswinger, sending his off stump spinning. Syed Rasel, who kept things tight, trapped Sean Williams with a sharp in-dipper, before Dolar sent back Elton Chigumbura with another big inswinger. As Zimbabwe slid, the value of the Dolar rose. He was flown in midway through the series as a replacement player, though Bangladesh will wonder after this performance why he wasn’t in the original squad.Brendan Taylor was Zimbabwe’s last hope. He wasn’t afraid to use his feet against the spinners to pick boundaries over the on side, including a huge six over midwicket. The hosts desperately needed a recovery, and it took shape with two fifty-plus partnerships piloted by Taylor. Prosper Utseya assisted Taylor with a stand of 54 before another stubborn supporting act by Ray Price. The spinners bowled in tandem from the 16th over till almost the end, but didn’t quite enjoy the same success as the seamers. Taylor and the lower order sensed that their only chance of a recovery was to pick as many singles off them. The spinners tried variations, slipped the odd quicker delivery in the blockhole, but the batsmen resisted. Taylor showed a lot of patience and also trusted his partners by constantly rotating the strike. After lofting Mahmudullah over midwicket in the 24th over, he had to wait 15 overs for his next boundary.Price nudged it around, picked the gaps and wasn’t afraid to heave the spinners across the line, a tactic which fetched him boundaries. Taylor went shortly after getting his half-century, lbw to Mehrab Hossain jnr, before Price tried to marshall the tail.Bangladesh’s start was steady, dominated by Mushfiqur who got valuable exposure in his makeshift role as an opener. Tamim Iqbal was uncharacteristically scratchy, and the frustration led to his dismissal. Mohammad Ashraful tried to waltz his way back into form by regularly charging the bowlers, but his audacity got the better of him – a slash off Chigumbura was taken by Sibanda, who pulled off a one-handed blinder leaping at backward point. Only recklessness, it seemed could have caused Bangladesh the game.Mushfiqur had the luxury of time to build an innings and made his promotion count. A lean trot with the bat – which included four ducks in five innings – in 2007 cost him his place in the ODI squad. That was a distant memory today as he took charge, dictating terms by scooping Ed Rainsford over his head before taking on Elton Chigumbura to set the tone for the chase. He was comfortable when the spinners came on, making room to cut and pierce the big gaps in the field. It was a near-flawless effort, save for a thick edge that just cleared short third man. He reached out to a half volley from Utseya and crashed it through the covers, before cutting the same bowler through the off side. Mushfiqur exploited the big gaps in the field left by Zimbabwe, who had already given up, and slowly proceeded towards his hundred. A final act of bravado – stepping down the track to Price – cost him his maiden century but he had already done his job.Bangladesh wouldn’t have settled for anything less than a 4-1 series win; what remains on the wishlist is consistency against tougher teams.

Newcastle make offer to Axel Witsel

An update has emerged on Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel regarding interest from Newcastle United.

What’s the talk?

According to TuttoJuve, the Magpies have tabled a contract offer for the Belgium international, with his deal due to expire at the end of the season.

The report claims Juventus are also interested in a swoop for the beast, with Newcastle offering him a contract worth £8.4m (€10m) per season.

Fans will be buzzing

Newcastle fans will surely be buzzing to read that PIF are working hard to secure a deal for Witsel. They have the opportunity to land him on a pre-contract in January ahead of officially signing him in the summer, and this update suggests that they are serious about sealing a move.

The experienced midfielder could be a terrific addition to Eddie Howe’s side and help them take the next step to fighting in the top half of the Premier League table, provided they avoid relegation this term. He has played at the top level of the game for club and country and could provide an injection of quality into the Magpies’ squad.

Witsel has been capped a whopping 120 times by Belgium and has made 122 appearances for Dortmund to date, having also played 180 times for Zenit in Russia. He also has bags of Champions League and Europa League experience, showing that he knows what it takes to play at the pinnacle of club football as he has competed in the premier competitions.

The 32-year-old has averaged a career WhoScored rating of 7.00 and 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game, showing how remarkably consistent he has been over the years for his various clubs and for Belgium. This highlights the quality he could bring to Newcastle and shows why fans will surely be buzzing to read that the club have made an official contract offer to the midfield beast, who has proven that he can produce consistently impressive displays.

He has shown that he can play at the top level and he could be an important signing for the Magpies both in terms of his impact on and off the pitch. His aforementioned statistics highlight his on-field qualities, while his experience could also help the younger players off the pitch, and signing a player of his stature could potentially help PIF to attract more players to the club in the long run.

Alli, Tanganga and Gollini worst Tottenham

Antonio Conte was given a shock over just how much work he still has to do at Tottenham Hotspur after they lost 2-1 away at NS Mura on Thursday evening.

The Slovenians, who are the lowest-ranked team in the Europa Conference League, took an early lead after a fine curling strike from Tomi Horvat, before Ryan Sessegnon found himself sent off after being given two yellow cards by the referee.

Harry Kane levelled the match in the second half with a delicate chip over the goalkeeper, before a Ben Davies slip proved costly as Amadej Marosa raced through in the last minute of the game to put his shot past Pierluigi Gollini in the Tottenham net.

There were some truly abysmal performances from a lot of Spurs players on the night, and The Transfer Tavern has used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who were the three worst to have played at least 45 minutes:

Dele Alli (6.4)

Admittedly tied with second place with the same SofaScore rating (6.4), Alli sneaks into third given that he had less time on the pitch after being substituted off for Son Heung-Min in the 54th minute.

It was yet another frustrating evening for the Englishman, summed up by getting himself booked for having an argument with a Mura player just before he came off.

Alli lost out on five of his duels and failed to record a single shot or key pass, while only managing 29 touches of the ball in total as he struggled to make any real impact.

Japhet Tanganga (6.4)

Tanganga also received a 6.4 rating from SofaScore after being part of a defence which was nothing short of shambolic at times.

The centre-back lost out on three duels and failed to make a clearance or block any shots on his goal, while he was also guilty of losing possession seven times.

Pierluigi Gollini (6.1)

Perhaps inevitably, Gollini was given a bad rating (6.1) by SofaScore after letting in two goals, and with the second he would have especially felt as if he could have done much better.

The goalkeeper resisted from trying to play out from the back on multiple occasions, yielding just 25 touches of the ball, while he made no saves at all in the entire match.

Sessegnon received a 5.1 rating after getting sent off, but of course played less than 45 minutes after getting sent off just after the half-hour mark.

Hussey tips Daredevils as favourites

David Hussey believes Victoria have the skills to challenge the world’s best players in the Champions League Twenty20

David Hussey knows all too well that it took Australia only three days to crash out of the World Twenty20 tournament this year. He was part of the side that was bundled out in the first round after losing to West Indies and Sri Lanka in early June. Hussey is keen to ensure Victoria don’t suffer a similar fate in the Champions League Twenty20.The Bushrangers have arguably been the best domestic Twenty20 team in the world over the past four years, during which time they have won three Australian titles and have been beaten in only three matches in the format. Therefore it will be all the more galling if they stumble on the world stage.Victoria’s problem is that they have been drawn in a group with Delhi Daredevils, who Hussey believes are the tournament favourites. The Bushrangers play their opening match of the competition in Delhi against the Daredevils, whose squad includes destructive Twenty20 batsmen including AB de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan, as well as the wily spinners Daniel Vettori and Amit Mishra.”Delhi Daredevils probably are the biggest threat,” Hussey said in Melbourne, as the Victorians prepared to head to Lismore in New South Wales for a series of practice matches. “They’ve got Virender Sehwag up front with Gautam Gambhir, two matchwinners who can take away a game in any two overs. They’re also led at the front of the attack with two left-armers, Ashish Nehra and Dirk Nannes.”It is an attack so strong that Glenn McGrath, who was in the Daredevils’ preliminary squad, couldn’t even win a place in the final 15-man group. But the Victorians have their own advantages. Their coach Greg Shipperd was also in charge of Delhi during the IPL, and has handed the Daredevils over to his assistant David Saker – also an assistant with the Bushrangers – for the Champions League. They know the Delhi Daredevils spearhead Nannes, who also helped bowl Victoria into the tournament but whose, better than any other team and will feel comfortable against his pace. Then there is also the camaraderie among the Victorians, who have no foreign players in their side.”We’re going to have to play at our best to compete with them and I reckon we can cause a little bit of a surprise,” Hussey said. “We’ve got matchwinners throughout the team, great fast bowlers and great batters. Probably our strength at the moment is our batters led by Brad Hodge and our skipper Cameron White. But I think we’ve got a very well-balanced team and we know the basics very, very well.”They’ve got a lot of overseas players – a lot of the other teams have – whereas we train together, eat together, sleep together. I think that’s got a huge bearing on how we play.”The match against Delhi Daredevils is followed four days later by a game against the Sri Lankan domestic champions Wayamba, whose squad includes international stars such as Mahela Jayawardene and Ajantha Mendis. One of the three teams will fail to progress to the next round. For Hussey, there is incentive not only in the US$2.5 million prize money for the winners, and the desire for Victoria to emerge triumphant. He is also hoping to shine enough to win back his place in Australia’s one-day side.Hussey scored his maiden ODI century against Scotland in August but was dropped from the 50-over side to take on England and the Champions Trophy squad. However, he said the selectors had been clear that he could regain his position with strong domestic form.”I suppose I didn’t grab the spot with both hands,” Hussey said. “It’s really up to me now to make as many runs for Victoria as possible, and hopefully have a great Champions League and force my way back in.”They [the selectors] basically outlined a way to get back into the team. They did say there would be many more opportunities in the future and that it’s up to me to grab that opportunity and run with it for quite some time. That’s what I plan to do if I get another chance.”

'I don't want to be captain' – Sehwag

Indian batsman suggests a new face be given the vice-captain’s responsibility, so that he can be groomed to take over the reins after captain MS Dhoni

‘I want that I should continue to score runs and keep winning matches for the team’•AFP

Indian batsman Virender Sehwag has said he doesn’t want to lead the team and suggested that a new face be given the vice-captain’s responsibility, so that he can be groomed to take over the reins after captain MS Dhoni.”I don’t want to be a captain, I have already told selectors about it. I have said that a new player should be made vice-captain and be groomed to be a captain,” Sehwag told Indian news channel . “I want that I should continue to score runs and keep winning matches for the team.”Sehwag, 30, was appointed vice-captain in October 2005, with Rahul Dravid replacing Sourav Ganguly as captain. A dip in Sehwag’s form in 2006-07 resulted in VVS Laxman assuming the vice-captaincy responsibilities in Tests, albeit for a brief period. Sachin Tendulkar was appointed deputy for the 2007 World Cup before the position went to Dhoni soon after. And it was only when Dhoni became captain in all three formats, the last being for Tests after Anil Kumble’s retirement in November last year, that Sehwag regained the vice-captaincy. But a shoulder injury for Sehwag in the lead-up to the World Twenty20 in June this year resulted in the deputy’s position going to Yuvraj Singh. However, Sehwag hoped to regain his fitness completely before turning out for the Delhi Daredevils in the Champions League, beginning on October 8.Sehwag also considered Ganguly as the best leader he had played under. “Sourav Ganguly has been the best captain India ever had,” Sehwag said. “Sourav took over as captain of the India cricket team when it was going through a very bad patch. The Indian team was struggling to put come out of the match-fixing scandal. He had a responsibility to put together a new team and he did a splendid job.”

Rangers: Gio must axe Alfredo Morelos

Rangers manager Gio van Bronckhorst is set for his first match in charge of the Glasgow giants this week at Ibrox on Thursday night.

The Gers host Sparta Prague in the Europa League as they attempt to keep their dreams of progressing in the competition alive with a win.

He watched on from the stands as the club fell short of reaching the League Cup final over the weekend. They lost 3-1 to Hibernian, with Martin Doyle scoring a first-half hat-trick.

Time’s up

One player he must ruthlessly axe for this clash is Colombian forward Alfredo Morelos, who struggled badly in the defeat.

The £33k-per-week attacker endured a difficult afternoon in the loss to Hibernian and his display could call time on his place in the starting XI, for now.

Football Scotland reporter Calum Woodger handed him a dismal 3/10 match rating. He wrote: “A very poor outing from the Colombian who disappeared in a big game once again – abysmal. 3”

He has now scored seven goals in 21 appearances in all competitions, including four in 11 Premiership matches, and is yet to score in the group stages of the Europa League. Morelos has had nine shots in the four games in this competition and has not registered a single assist, highlighting his struggles in Europe.

His form in the Europa League and his ‘abysmal’ showing against Hibernian should result in van Bronckhorst axing him from the XI. Another player should be given the opportunity to show that they can lead the line for the Gers, as they look to beat the Czech outfit.

The frustrating part of Morelos’ recent showing is that he has previously shown his quality. Speaking anonymously to The Athletic in 2019, a Scottish Premiership player called him a ‘nightmare’ to defend against.

“There’s never a time when he’s walking about or not interested in the game. He’s always involved, whether that’s taking you away or dragging you closer to the ball.

“He’s kind of dropping deep now and going out wide. That’s a nightmare for defenders because he’s your player that you’re meant to be man-marking but then you’re dragged out of position and you’ve got midfield runners taking his space. That means you need to start talking to your full-backs and centre-mids to start swapping players, which makes it a lot more difficult.”

He also managed three goals and seven assists in ten Europa League games last season, proving that he does have the ability to make an impact at this level. However, something has gone wrong for him this term and spending this match on the bench could potentially give him the jolt he needs to buck up his act, which is why the Dutch coach must make this key decision.
