Brown drops Issa Diop claim at West Ham

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Paul Brown of The Daily Star has dropped a West Ham United claim involving defender Issa Diop.

The Lowdown: Diop on the fringes…

Having played in just two matches in all competitions so far this season, it appears that the centre-back’s position under manager David Moyes is under threat.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments/” title=”West Ham developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, having featured over a full 90 minutes in both the Carabao Cup and Europa League (WhoScored), the 24-year-old is yet to feature in the Premier League this term.

As Moyes has greater choice in defence, Diop could face a battle to earn back his place as one of the first names on West Ham’s team sheet.

The Latest: Brown drops Diop claim…

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Daily Star reporter Brown has backed this belief that the former club record signing for £22m may face a battle in east London.

“I think it looks bad for Diop that Zouma is there now too,” he explained.

“He looked brilliant and formed a real wall in the European game against Dinamo Zagreb a couple of weeks ago. He has a lot of experience.

“In terms of the physique and talent level, he is very similar to Diop, but he’s been around and done it more often.

“He has Premier League and Champions League experience so it’s going to be hard for Diop to get back in.

“There’s no reason why he can’t but he has certainly got to show a lot more than he has over the last couple of seasons to do that.”

The Verdict: Tough road ahead…

The signing of Zouma, who often performed impressively for Chelsea last season, certainly comes as a mighty blow for Diop’s chances of playing regular Premier League football at the London Stadiun.

However, the gigantic 6 foot 4 powerhouse, who was once hailed as a “monster” by Jose Mourinho, could provide Moyes with very capable defensive backup off the bench and real steel when called upon, potentially improving West Ham’s chances of enjoying another stellar season.

If Diop bides his time and performs well when required, he could work his way back into the manager’s plans.

Van de Beek could join Everton in January

Fabrizio Romano is ‘sure’ Everton target Donny van de Beek ‘will leave’ Manchester United in January if his situation doesn’t improve.

The lowdown

Everton director of football Marcel Brands recently confirmed that Van de Beek was ‘on our list’ for the summer transfer window.

They hoped to sign him on loan in the final knockings of the window but ‘at the last minute it was cancelled’.

He said it was ‘hard to say’ at this point whether the Blues would revisit the potential move come January.

When Everton visited Old Trafford on Saturday, Van de Beek was unused substitute for the seventh time this season. In fact, he’s played a meagre six minutes in the Premier League so far (via Transfermarkt).

His only domestic starts of 2020/21 have come in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

The latest

Speaking to The United Stand, Romano said that ‘as of now’, Van de Beek is ‘planning to leave Manchester United in January’.

He could remain in the Premier League, ‘with Everton one of the clubs interested’, but there are also said to be suitors in Italy and Spain.

Barring a turnaround in his fortunes in the next ‘two-three months’, he’ll be departing.

The verdict

Van de Beek apparently nets £120,000 per week at Old Trafford, and it remains to be seen whether Everton could cover the entirety of the sum or whether a split with United would be necessary in a loan deal.

You can’t help but feel sorry for the Dutchman, who must have been given assurances during the transfer window that he had an important part to play.

As it’s transpired, he’s been given the number of minutes you’d expect for a promising Under-23 player, maybe even less than that.

You’d hope that United don’t stand in his way next time.

Hay and Diamanti tons force draw

A round-up of the State Championship matches between March 6 and 9

Cricinfo staff09-Mar-2009Greg Hay and Brendon Diamanti scored valuable second-innings hundreds for Central Districts to ensure a draw against Canterbury at Rangiora.Central Districts were struggling to stay in the game after conceding a first-innings lead of 280 and were heading towards defeat after being reduced to 119 for 4 and 263 for 6 following-on. However, Diamanti and Hay combined to add 205 runs for the seventh wicket and remained unbeaten on 135 and 131 respectively. Central Districts finally declared on 468 for 6, setting Canterbury a target of 189. Canterbury’s top-order failed in the final innings and the match ended with them on 19 for 3 on the final day. However, it was the top order that had given Canterbury a strong grip on the match. Three out of the top four batsmen scored centuries as they piled up 543 in the first innings. Michael Papps and Johann Myburgh scored 127 and 107 respectively while Canterbury’s Indian import Rahul Dravid contributed 102, gaining valuable practice ahead of the Tests against New Zealand. There was nearly a fourth century in the innings but Kruger van Wyk fell on 92. He was the first of Indian legspinner Amit Mishra’s three wickets. Diamanti was impressive with the ball for Central Districts, dismissing five top-order batsmen for 74 runs.Five of the top six Central Districts batsmen got steady starts in the first innings but none of them went on to score hundreds. Andrew Ellis, who finished with 4 for 39, chipped away at the top order to dismiss Central Districts for 263. Facing a deficit of 280, they were in danger of defeat before Diamanti and Hay performed an impressive rescue act.Auckland’s bowlers struck at regular intervals to clinch a 22-run victory in a close contest against Northern Districts at Whangarei. Chasing 269 for victory, Northern Districts began the final day on 113 for 3 but were dismissed for 246. They began the day poorly, with Hamish Marshall falling almost immediately. Wickets continued to fall frequently thereafter. Colin de Grandhomme took 3 for 40, accounting for the lower-order. Joseph Yovich (41) and Te Ahu Davis (30 off 26 balls) gave Northern Districts hope but were unable to finish the job. There was little to separate the teams on the first three days. Auckland were in trouble in their first innings, losing their first three wickets for 16 after choosing to bat. However the middle order rallied – Scott Styris scored 95 and Grandhomme 63 – to lead Auckland to 277.Northern Districts also struggled in their first innings. They were 65 for 3 at one stage and were also rescued by two half-centurions. Opener Brad Wilson scored 62 and Michael Parlane made 75 in the middle order to limit the damage caused by Daryl Tuffey (3 for 45) and legspinner Tarun Nethula, who took 4 for 72. Thanks to their efforts Northern Districts trailed by only nine runs on first innings.Auckland were in tatters in their second innings at 134 for 8, leading by only 125. Debutant offspinner Jonothon Boult was the wrecker-in-chief with 4 for 78. But Northern Districts were thwarted by Gareth Hopkins, who scored 100 off 149 balls. He was supported by Tuffey who contributed 53 to a 106-run partnership for the ninth wicket. They took Auckland to 259, helping set a target that was 22 runs too many for Northern Districts.Wellington were 39 runs short of their target and had four wickets in hand when their match against Otago ended in a draw in Dunedin. Both teams put in much-improved performances in the second innings after collapsing in their first. Having been asked to bat, Otago were dismissed for 174 with Warren McSkimming’s 39 being the highest score. Michael Burns (4 for 41) and Dewayne Bowden (3 for 40) were Wellington’s best bowlers.Wellington fared worse in their reply. McSkimming picked up 4 for 40 and Wellington were skittled for 139, conceding a first-innings lead of 35 to Otago. Greg Todd led a more solid performance from Otago in the second innings. He scored 73 and Indian batsman VVS Laxman made 44 as Otago steadily built an advantage. However Luke Woodcock picked up three vital top-order wickets and the rest of the batsmen failed to convert their starts. Otago were eventually dismissed for 286, setting Wellington a target of 322, the highest total of the match.Wellington lost two early wickets an were 42 for 2 in the chase before the middle-order batsmen weighed in with solid contributions. Neal Parlane made 59, BJ Crook scored an unbeaten 101, and Woodcock contributed 69 as Wellington pushed towards the target. However, they were running short of time and their challenge suffered when Woodcock cut through the batting order to reduce Wellington from 237 for 3 to 259 for 6.

Leeds: Predicted line-up vs Southampton

After tasting their first win of the Premier League season against Watford last time out, Leeds United will be hoping to make it back-to-back victories when they take on Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side claimed all three points against the Hornets thanks to a goal from Diego Llorente, and the Whites manager will have some big decisions to make before today’s clash against the Saints.

Along with a number of injury issues, Bielsa also has to contend with uncertainty over Raphinha’s availability following his exploits with Brazil on international duty.

With that in mind, here is a look at how Leeds might line up for the clash against Southampton at St Mary’s later this afternoon.

In goal, Illan Meslier will be looking to keep his second successive clean sheet after shutting out the Hornets, while Bielsa should look to keep faith in 22-year-old Jamie Shackleton, who impressed against Watford by winning four tackles.

Further up the pitch, the Leeds manager will be desperately hoping that Kalvin Phillips is passed fit for the game, while he could also make a big call by dropping the underperforming Stuart Dallas from his starting line-up.

That could see a potential opportunity for Tyler Roberts to come into the team, while if Raphinha fails to come through in time, Jack Harrison should come in from the bench to start today.

With Patrick Bamford out once again like he has been for the past couple of games, Rodrigo will once again be tasked with leading the line.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has confirmed an encouraging Leeds boost over Kalvin Phillips…

Zaheer's five gives India control

A magnificent display of fast bowling from Zaheer Khan, coupled with a spineless batting performance by the home team, put India well on course to a series-clinching victory after just two days of the Wellington Test

A magnificent display of fast bowling from Zaheer Khan, coupled with a spineless batting performance by the home team, put India well on course to a series-clinching victory after just two days of the Wellington Test. New Zealand needed a strong batting display to stay in the series, but the technique and temperament of their top order was exposed thoroughly yet again, as they folded meekly in 65 overs for 197. Though India lost Virender Sehwag early, that was the only negative in the day, which they finished 233 in front, with nine wickets in hand. Both teams could lay claims to taking the honours on the opening day, but today belonged quite emphatically to the visitors. Zaheer was the architect, knocking the stuffing out of the New Zealand top order by taking the first four wickets. Ross Taylor was the only batsman who stood firm, scoring a classy and unblemished 42, but none of the other batsmen looked the part.New Zealand needed just 13 deliveries to clean up India’s last wicket, but that was as good as it got for them. Ishant Sharma struggled while bowling against the wind, but Zaheer was relentless from the first ball. He charged in, found the perfect length and some swing, mixed in the short deliveries smartly, and changed his line of attack to keep the batsmen guessing. Operating mostly from a short run-up, he seemed to bowl within himself and yet worked up brisk pace.He started the New Zealand slide, switching to round the stumps to get rid of Martin Guptill, who was judging Zaheer’s over-the-wicket offerings to a nicety. But when the angle changed, Guptill tried to stand tall to defend a short one angled into him, and could only get an inside-edge onto his stumps. Daniel Flynn, back in the team for Jamie How, offered no resistance, lasting only eight deliveries before nicking a perfect delivery that pitched in the corridor and seamed away.Zaheer’s first spell read 8-2-18-2, and after a brief break, which included the lunch interval, he was back to wreck more havoc. Tim McIntosh had somehow made his way to 32 without ever being convincing – stiff and upright, he was often late on his shots and played-and-missed on several occasions – before Zaheer ended his misery with the short one. McIntosh was in two minds and in the end limply hung his bat, edging to Yuvraj Singh, who finally took a catch in the slip cordon. That brought together Taylor and Jesse Ryder, easily New Zealand’s best batsmen, but Ryder looked unsettled from the start. He was troubled by Harbhajan’s drift and turn, before attempting a stroke that will make him cringe when he sees the replay: Zaheer tempted him with a short and wide ball, so wide that Ryder had to stretch out to reach it, and all he managed was the toe end of the bat.Zaheer Khan was outstanding with the new ball, and took the first four New Zealand wickets to fall on the second day•Getty Images

Through all the limp batting at one end, Taylor’s approach suggested he was playing on another surface, against another attack. From ball one, he was precise with his footwork and assured in judgment, playing close to his body, with the full face of the bat, and scarcely looking in any discomfort. He started his innings with a superb straight-drive for four off Zaheer, and played several more strokes that stood out. When India had a stranglehold over proceedings in a period before lunch when seven overs fetched seven runs, Taylor broke the shackles with a classy cover-drive off the accurate Munaf Patel. After lunch, he played the shot of the innings: there was hardly anything wrong with Zaheer’s delivery, which was on a good length just outside off, but Taylor was still good enough to effortlessly ease it through cover-point with a small shuffle, short back-lift and outstanding timing. It was an innings that deserved to go much further, but was unfortunately cut short when umpire Daryl Harper upheld an appeal for a catch down the leg side. Replays suggested there was no contact between bat and ball, but Taylor didn’t question the decision, walking off as soon as the finger went up.Zaheer was the architect of the New Zealand collapse, but Harbhajan bowled superbly and deserved his success. Bowling at a slower pace than he normally does, he got the ball to drift, grip, and spin in an unchanged spell that began just before lunch and didn’t end till the New Zealand innings was wrapped up. James Franklin, who continues to bat above Brendon McCullum for reasons unknown, was his second victim, sweeping tamely to square leg, while McCullum, who was left to play with the tail for much of his innings, edged a cut to MS Dhoni, who marked his return to the team with six catches, a record for an Indian wicketkeeper. That the loudest cheers from New Zealand supporters probably came when Chris Martin – who had scored two runs in his 11 previous Test innings – lofted Harbhajan straight down the ground for four summed up the kind of day they had. The Indians, who are eyeing their 100th Test win, won’t be complaining.
