Plenty at stake as top three sides go in to battle

In addition to a 2-0 series victory, India will look to regain the No. 2 spot in the ICC Test rankings with a win in the second Test against England in Mohali starting Friday. The three points gained will put them above South Africa, who will then have to

As well as looking to wrap up the series 2-0, India will look to regain the No. 2 spot in the ICC Test rankings with a win in the second Test against England in Mohali starting Friday. Having briefly secured the second spot with a 2-0 win against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in October-November, they were toppled by South Africa who beat Bangladesh 2-0 in the two-Test series at home, towards the end of last month. The three points gained will put India above South Africa, who will then have to ensure a series win against Australia, the No. 1 team, in their contest starting Wednesday in Perth, to hold on to second spot. However, South Africa have the chance to go top if they whitewash Australia 3-0.Australia have held on to the top spot despite the defeat in India, followed swiftly by a 2-0 series win in the Trans-Tasman Trophy at home to New Zealand. They are currently 13 points clear of South Africa, and 14 of India.A 3-0 series win at home against South Africa will give them four points and stretch the gap ahead of no. 2 to 21 points. Any series win, in fact, will strengthen their position. The Australia-South Africa series holds a number of incentives for the players as well. The South African pace duo of Dale Steyn (No. 2) and Makhaya Ntini (No. 4) will look to improve their positions among the top five Test bowlers, given that Australia’s Stuart Clark (No. 3) has been ruled out of the first Test. Jacques Kallis will also look to widen the gap between him and Daniel Vettori at No. 2 in the Test allrounder rankings.Michael Hussey, currently No. 4 in the Test batsmen rankings, will also look to move up the charts, and narrow the gap at the top. But he will hope that both, West Indies’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul (No. 1) and Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara (No. 2) falter this December, in the series away to New Zealand and Bangladesh respectively.

John Percy drops Derby County EFL update

Wayne Rooney’s Derby County are still at risk of receiving a points deduction this season.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a claim made by John Percy, with The Telegraph journalist revealing on Twitter that talks are ongoing between Derby and the EFL over an “agreed sanction” for the club’s financial breaches, with the governing body pushing for a points deduction – with a nine-point sanction on this season’s total, with a further three-point suspended deduction, being a possible outcome.

Percy continued by stating that the Rams insist that their accounting did not break EFL rules, so a compromise must be reached between the two parties – something which both Derby and the EFL wish to resolve as soon as possible.

In his tweet, the journalist said: “DCFC update: talks ongoing with the EFL over an “agreed sanction” for financial breaches. EFL pushing for points deduction (-12 & -3 suspended possible). Derby insist their accounting policy is fair, so compromise must be reached. Both sides determined to finally resolve it ASAP.”

Fans will be worried

The news that the EFL are still pushing for a points deduction is sure to come as a headache to everyone professionally involved with Derby County, while it is also bound to leave fans of the club rather worried.

Indeed, despite Wayne Rooney’s side starting their Championship campaign in impressive form considering the club’s off-field issues, picking up six points over their opening five fixtures of the season and suffering defeat just once, a possible nine-point sanction would completely wipe out this decent early season form, and then some.

However, with it appearing as if there are negotiations to be had with the EFL regarding the severity of the club’s punishment – Percy revealed in a further tweet that “Derby will either try and agree a compromise or fight [the sanctions]” – it would certainly not appear as if a nine-point penalty is inevitable.

As such, all of Rooney, Mel Morris, the Derby County players and fans of the club will undoubtedly be hoping that a positive resolution can be found regarding the Rams’ fate in this matter, and then they can finally begin to put this whole mess behind them.

Ewen Thompson, the Central Districts left-arm fast bowler, is the only new face in New Zealand’s Twenty20 squad for the two internationals against West Indies. Jacob Oram, who missed the two Tests owing to a calf strain, has been included but he may play only as a batsman.”Thompson makes the side on the strength of his outstanding Twenty20 statistics – 16 wickets at an average of 17 and an economy rate of 6.97,” Glenn Turner, the chief selector, said. “He’s also top of the MVP rankings in the State Championship right now.””He swings it and he’s one of those guys who doesn’t ‘arrive’ so you can get through your shot,” Turner told the . “He’s always at you, he’s hard to score from and he can give it a whack at the death.”The omissions from the Test squad include Jamie How, Tim McIntosh and Iain O’Brien. “This squad is about horses for courses,” Turner said. “A Twenty20 side has a different look from a Test side – it’s a different game and has different requirements.”We haven’t really played a lot of Twenty20 and we’re still gaining experience. If we’re going to pick up our game we need a good depth of players who can deliver in this arena.”Thompson, 29, has played 40 first-class games and 38 one-dayers for Central Districts since his debut in 1999-00.

Rangers predicted XI to face Motherwell

Rangers face Motherwell at Ibrox today as they attempt to return to winning ways after their defeat to Lyon on Thursday night.

They kicked off their Europa League campaign with a 2-0 loss to the French outfit and now return to Premiership action against Graham Alexander’s side.

Steven Gerrard’s men showed some encouraging signs against Lyon but were ultimately unable to make the most of their chances and conceded two preventable goals to condemn them to defeat.

How many changes will Gerrard make? Here is our predicted XI for the match…

We are predicting that the 41-year-old will make three changes from Thursday, with Fashion Sakala, Kemar Roofe and Scott Wright coming in for Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Joe Aribo.

The Colombian is an injury doubt for this clash after he suffered a knock against Lyon. Instead of Gerrard risking him for this match against Motherwell, we are predicting that Sakala will take Morelos’ place at the top end of the pitch.

The 24-year-old is yet to get off the mark for the Gers and today could be his chance to stake a claim for his place in the side by breaking his duck and finding the back of the net. Gerrard needs to omit the £33k-per-week Morelos because playing him could aggravate his injury.

One player who will certainly be ruled out is Kent. Gerrard has confirmed that the winger is set to be out for a fewweeks with a hamstring injury, which means that there is a spot available on the left flank. We are predicting that Wright will be given the nod to start, having scored once in two Premiership appearances so far this season.

With Kent poised to miss a number of matches, this game could be a huge opportunity for Wright to put himself in contention to earn some regular minutes in the coming weeks. He needs to step up and show that he can be the main man out wide for Rangers.

Finally, we believe that Roofe will return to the starting XI in place of Joe Aribo. We published an article explaining why the ex-Leeds forward must be unleashed against Motherwell, along with why the Nigerian deserves to be dropped to the bench after his disappointing performance against Lyon.

AND in other news, Gerrard must unleash £26k-p/w Rangers “handful” vs Motherwell, he’s a match-winner…

Farmer's son hits the big time

Australia’s new Test opener Phillip Hughes is a quietly-spoken country kid and a positive-scoring, free-flowing batsman, albeit with a technique that is not to everyone’s taste

The whispers began three years ago. A banana farmer’s son had arrived in the big smoke and was punishing bowling attacks across Sydney grade cricket. “I’ll tell you this,” said his coach, Neil d’Costa, who had just chaperoned Michael Clarke to cricket’s grandest stage. “This kid will go all the way.”The prophecy unfolded rapidly. Runs for Western Suburbs. Runs for the New South Wales and Australia Under-19s. Runs for New South Wales and Australia A. And all this by the age of 20. Hughes was not so much a batsman as a cricketing tsunami, swamping competitions with torrents of runs and earning the reputation as Australia’s next big thing.Hughes is an intriguing subject on both sides of the boundary rope. Away from the game, he is a quietly-spoken country kid who, paradoxically, has developed a taste for high fashion, suave hairstyles and diamond earrings. On the pitch, he is a positive-scoring, free-flowing batsman, albeit with a technique that is not to everyone’s taste. But it is runs that define him as a cricketer, and runs that caught the eye of Andrew Hilditch’s selection panel. With 1570 to his name in 17 first-class games at an average of 60.38, Hughes has given Australia every reason to believe his is not a premature selection.”Watching [South Africa] on TV in Australia, they all seemed pretty good,” Hughes said. “I’d love to have a crack at all of them.”Hughes’ elevation to the Test squad was not entirely surprising – his 117 in last season’s Sheffield Shield final prompted a wave of media calls for his promotion – but it certainly sparked excitement across the Australian cricketing landscape. Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, was equally impressed with Hughes’ 151 and 82 not out in Newcastle over the past week, when he knew the spotlight was on him.”It’s probably one of the most exciting things I’ve had to do since I’ve been a selector, picking a 20-year-old player who’s scoring that volume of runs under pressure,” Hilditch said. “We probably haven’t done that since Ricky Ponting, so it’s pretty exciting.”He’s got a fairly simple technique and certain areas where he scores, he’s basically a very controlled sort of player. You probably don’t want to draw comparisons but maybe similar to Justin Langer when he started his career. He just seems to have a really good head about his shoulders.”Both Ponting and Langer spoke at length with Hughes during this week’s Allan Border medal presentation. Hughes was awarded the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year on the same evening Ponting was named joint winner of the Border medal, and the Australian captain was glowing in his praise for the man tasked with replacing Matthew Hayden at the top of the order.”It’s going to be a huge step up for him,” Ponting said. “It’s going to be a demanding tour on all the players, even us more experienced guys will find it difficult at times over there I’m sure.”Everything that he’s shown or indicated with his first-class cricket over the last couple of years would suggest that under pressure and in big moments he’s tended to stand up and do the job for New South Wales. That’s a great thing for him to have behind him already.”Hughes scored a breezy 64 in a tour match against New Zealand earlier in the summer, and on Thursday declared himself again ready to duel an international attack. “It’s all going very smoothly at the moment and I’m loving it,” he said. “I’ve batted a lot with Simon [Katich] for New South Wales now and he’s been great. It’s definitely great to bat with him and if [the opportunity] did come up [to open with him for Australia], it would be great.”
