Crystal Palace linked with Issa Diop

Crystal Palace have been linked with a move for West Ham United centre-back Issa Diop as new manager Patrick Vieira looks to continue his overhaul of the first-team squad.

What’s the story?

According to French outlet FootMercato, the Eagles are one of three Premier League clubs keen on acquiring the 24-year-old’s services this summer, with Wolves and Southampton also credited with an interest.

The Hammers are thought to be closing in on the signature of Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic, so David Moyes could be prepared to let Diop depart the London Stadium over the coming weeks.

With Palace now reportedly pulling out of the race to sign Ozan Kabak, everything could be lined up for the former France under-21 international to make the short switch from east to south London.

Heir to Gary Cahill

Following his move from boyhood club Toulouse in a £22m deal three years ago, Diop settled into life on English shores well, quickly establishing himself in the Irons’ starting XI. The £16.2m-rated gem made 33 Premier League appearances in his debut season, and his domineering displays earned several admirers, including former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

“Their centre-backs had a fantastic match,” said the then-Red Devils boss following the Hammers’ 3-1 victory over United back in 2018. “Congratulations to the scout who found Diop, a monster who dictated everything.”

However, the 24-year-old has struggled to live up to his early promise over the last couple of campaigns. Craig Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna established a formidable partnership in the heart of West Ham’s defence last term, limiting Diop to just 15 top-flight starts.

As a result, the Frenchman has been linked with an imminent exit from the London Stadium, and Palace could be an ideal destination. With Mamadou Sakho, Scott Dann and Gary Cahill all being released on free transfers this summer, Vieira has already been forced to add several reinforcements to his backline.

The arrivals of Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi have strengthened the Eagles’ options in central defence, but their attempts to re-sign Cahill ultimately proved unsuccessful.

Indeed, like the Irons defender, the 35-year-old is renowned for his aerial prowess, having won 3.5 headers per game in each of the last two Premier League seasons. The Frenchman won 2.5 aerial duels per match in the 2019/20 campaign, also illustrating his ability in the air.

Therefore, Diop could prove to be the perfect heir to the former Chelsea ace. A fresh challenge and new surroundings may be the ideal combinations for the player to rediscover his best form, adding another valuable asset to Palace’s new era.

Leeds dealt Damsgaard blow

An update has emerged about Leeds target Mikkel Damsgaard, regarding Aston Villa’s pursuit of his services.

What’s the talk?

According to ClubDoria46, via Sport Witness, Aston Villa are set to make a £30m (€35m) bid for Leeds target Mikkel Damsgaard.

Leeds are reportedly interested in signing the 21-year-old Sampdoria forward, but Villa’s bid is said to be ready to be sent to the Italian side.

Bielsa will be livid

Marcelo Bielsa will be livid with this news as it seemingly decreases the likelihood of Damsgaard arriving at Elland Road this summer.

Villa have already prepared their bid and are on the verge of sending their proposal to Sampdoria, which shows that they are far advanced in their efforts to land him – whereas Leeds only have an interest in him at this stage.

Therefore, it looks like the Whites are lagging behind in the race for his signature and Villa could be able to wrap up a deal for the Danish gem before Victor Orta can make his move.

Ex-Leeds forward Noel Whelan labelled him as an exciting prospect earlier this summer and said that he would be a good addition to Bielsa’s squad.

He told Football Insider: “Wow, now he would be a signing. From what I have seen, he is the next big thing coming out of Denmark. Again, we are looking at players who are the right age and of the right profile. Somebody who would compliment what Marcelo Bielsa already has.

“Leeds nowadays are very intense and aggressive in their style of play and fitness plays a huge part. He looks to me as if he could do that as well, which is important because it’s not just about the little flicks. Damsgaard is a very exciting prospect. If we could get that deal over the line it would show just how far we’ve come in the last couple of years.”

The forward has four goals and three assists in his last six appearances for Denmark – averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.28 in five games in the European Championships this summer. This shows that he has the quality to perform at the international stage, boding well for any potential move to the Premier League.

He was on fire at the summer tournament, with 1.8 shots, 1.2 key passes and 1.8 dribbles completed per game. Damsgaard was a constant threat and able to make the most of the chances he was creating with the aforementioned goals and assists, proving that he has the bite to match the bark.

His statistics for Denmark suggest that he could be a tidy addition to Leeds’ squad next season. This is another reason why the Argentine head coach will not be best pleased that Villa are seemingly closing in on the winger, as Leeds really should be doing more to battle them for his signature.

A bandeira branca.

Pakistan face uphill battle to avoid whitewash

A battered and bruised Pakistan side, still nursing the wounds of the disastrous second Test defeat, face the prospect of another mauling from Australia when the two teams clash here Saturday in the third and final Test at Sharjah Cricket Stadium

Rehan Siddiqui19-Oct-2002A battered and bruised Pakistan side, still nursing the wounds of the disastrous second Test defeat, face the prospect of another mauling from Australia when the two teams clash here Saturday in the third and final Test at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. With the series already clinched the cock-a-hoop Australians, who prefer to do the talking on the field rather than off it, are determined to complete the second successive clean sweep against a demoralised squad further weakened by the latest withdrawal of their ‘cry baby’ Shoaib Akhtar, declared unfit after complaining of a minor back niggle. It is now a common ploy by self acclaimed world’s best bowler to get himself ruled out by unseen injuries when things do not go his way. As usual Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has agreed to dance to his tune deciding not to risk him but declaring he would be fit to undertake next month’s tour of Zimbabwe and followed by visit to South Africa.Shoaib and the already sidelined Abdul Razzaq, if one believes in the working of the PCB are scheduled to leave for Pakistan early Saturday.Another Australian victory here which cannot be ruled out considering the form and fortune of the two sides will make it sixth successive Test triumph and further plunge Pakistan cricket into crisis, self inflicted by the antics of Pakistan cricket management for whom everything is satisfactory. As for the match itself the current form of Pakistan team carrying players whose fitness are in doubt, including skipper Waqar Younis and wicket-keeper Rashid Latif, makes it easy to predict anything but another facile victory for the Aussies who have no injury problems and are expected to field the same eleven that was brutally cruel in the second Test.Pakistan, on the other hand, are likely to throw in the den possibly middle-order batsman Hasan Raza and rookie all-rounder Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan besides Shahid Afridi, who was flown in as replacement for the out-of-action Razzaq. The men likely to get the axe are Imran Nazir and Misbah-ul-Haq, both on present form are not Test material. One other change could be return of either of the two fast bowlers Mohammad Sami or Mohammad Zahid in place of leg-spinner Danish Kaneria, a poor man’s Shane Warne.Unlike the second Test when the temperature soared to 51 Celsius the weather is expected to be more amiable and offer comfort to the players.Reuters adds: The form of the Waugh brothers is not a concern as long as Australia keep winning, captain Steve Waugh said Friday.Pakistan coach Richard Pybus provoked a row by suggesting that Waugh and his 37-year-old twin Mark might be reaching the end of their Test careers after failing to notch a century between them in 11 Tests since last year’s tour of England.”I want to score runs and we want to win every Test we play and that’s the goal,” said Waugh.”I think when you see Australia play, you see a result and that’s not happened everywhere. It’s a very successful side and time will be the judge. We guys can still raise our side.”Steve has scored 31, 0 and 0 in this series while Mark has made 55, 0 and two but, more importantly to the Australia skipper, Australia have won seven, drawn three and lost just one of the tests since a Waugh last hit a hundred.”Both of us got runs in the first innings for first Test in Colombo and then Shoaib turned the match for a while. We won the match in the end and that’s what counts,” he added. “We want to win every match we play. That’s our thinking.”We want to win the series 3-0. But the job will be a lot harder this time as I am sure Pakistan must have worked out some game plan of staging a comeback.”Pakistan would surely welcome two such experienced Test batsmen as the Waughs into their side after collapsing to their lowest scores of 59 and 53 in losing the second Test by an innings and 198 runs.To add to his problems, Waqar will take to the field with a weakened bowling attack. “What has happened in the past can’t be reversed, but we are looking for a much improved performance in this Test,” said Waqar.”The wicket is slow and we have an extra option with the inclusion of Shahid Afridi in the team. The loss of Shoaib Akhtar is a big blow, but then there is nothing we could do about it.” “We are not concerned about the bowling department, but our batting has been pretty vulnerable.”Waugh said the one-sided nature of the second Test was not just caused by Pakistan’s weakness, which augured well for the Ashes series against England starting next month.”We played outstanding cricket (in the series) so you got to give credit the way we played and not concentrate on how badly Pakistan played,” Waugh said. “We played excellent cricket and pressurised Pakistan batsmen into making mistakes and took our opportunities. We are ready for this Test and ready for the England contest.”Teams:Pakistan (from): Taufiq Umar, Shahid Afridi, Younis Khan, Faisal Iqbal, Hasan Raza, Rashid Latif, Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan, Saqlain Mushtaq, Waqar Younis (captain), Mohammad Sami, Mohammad Zahid, Misbah-ul-Haq, Imran Nazir, Danish Kaneira, Imran Farhat.Australia (probable): Matthew Hayden, Justin Langer, Ricky Ponting, Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh (captain), Damien Martyn, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Andy Bichel, Glenn McGrath.Umpires: Steve Bucknor (West Indies) and Srinivas Venkataraghavan (India).TV umpire: Asad Rauf (Pakistan).Match referee: Clive Lloyd (West Indies).

O Senhor Clássico, Jô, voltou a balançar as redes.
