Unbeatable Victoria prepare for Shield victory

Victoria enacted the Sheffield Shield’s version of torture on Queensland as they moved closer to lifting the trophy. The Bushrangers, who only need a draw to take the prize, finally closed their innings 45 minutes before stumps on the fourth day after gorging 8 for 591 declared. That left Queensland with an official target of 640, but they will have to settle for batting out the final day for a draw, which is the same thing that happened last year. They started well by reaching 0 for 29 at stumps, with Ryan Broad on 9 and Wade Townsend 16.David Hussey led the way with an aggressive 168 and with Cameron White, who fell for 89, they took the game well beyond Queensland’s reach. When Hussey, who hit 18 fours and four sixes during his 198 balls, and White fell with the score at 481 the Bushrangers had an advantage of 529. But they weren’t finished.Apart from Andrew McDonald, who was unbeaten on 44, the only other person the extra time was useful for was Cameron Boyce, the 20-year-old legspinner. He was able to record his first five-wicket haul in his second first-class game, finishing with 6 for 181 off 44 overs as he benefitted from the charging batsmen. He picked up both openers on the first day but had to wait until White somehow managed to play him on when defending a long way outside off stump. Matthew Wade (20) skied to mid-off and John Hastings (26) went down the pitch and missed a slog to midwicket to be stumped.Boyce’s sixth wicket was a mystery to Damien Wright, who was given out caught behind but missed the ball spinning out of the footmarks. Overall it was a promising sign for Queensland’s future, although being a slow bowler at the Gabba is not much fun.

Levy takes Spurs action over Ndombele

As per an update in the paper edition of Corriere dello Sport, as shared by Sport Witness, there has been an exit development out of Tottenham Hotspur involving Tanguy Ndombele.

The Lowdown: Conte seeking sales…

The January transfer window has just 11 days remaining with Spurs still yet to confirm an incoming despite heavy links to Wolves star Adama Traore.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Tottenham transfer chief Fabio Paratici and club chairman Daniel Levy, however, have managed to shift one face with promising youngster Dilan Markanday completing a permanent move to Blackburn Rovers.

Other names have been linked to a north London exit, including the likes of Matt Doherty and Dele Alli, with news from Italy now sharing a development involving club record signing Ndombele.

The Latest: Levy personally green-lights exit…

As explained in the report, Tottenham’s Levy has now personally given the go-ahead for him to leave this window as he transfer lists Ndombele.

According to CDS (via Sport Witness), the Spurs honcho has even offered him specifically to former boss Jose Mourinho at Roma – but Ndombele’s €10m-per-year (£8.3m) salary has proven a major stumbling block despite their interest.

The Verdict: Time to go?

Mourinho himself lauded the 25-year-old’s ‘amazing ability’ during his tenure at N17 and it’s little secret Ndombele possesses real talent when applying it correctly.

He finished last campaign as Spurs’ best dribbler in the Premier League, averaging more successful take-ons per 90 (2.2) than any Lilywhites man over 2020/2021 (WhoScored).

However, the real point of contention is Ndombele’s attitude and application, especially considering this isn’t the first time he has been linked to unceremoniously leaving Tottenham.

Now may be the best time to cut ties as Conte seeks a major rebuild and new dawn at the club.

Faisalabad, Karachi begin campaign with crushing wins

A round-up of the RBS Twenty20 Cup matches that took place on March 1

Cricinfo staff01-Mar-2010Group COne of the tournament heavies Faisalabad Wolves began their campaign by crushing Abbottabad Rhinos by 90 runs at the National Stadium. Mohammad Hafeez and Asif Hussain set up the win with an opening stand of 89 before Asid Afridi, the left-arm seamer on debut, dismissed Hussain. Afridi later made a big impact in the final over, taking four wickets in five balls to leave Faisalabad at 165 for 7. The astute Misbah-ul-Haq, with 40 off 26 balls including four sixes, ensured it didn’t derail his side from an impressive total.Abbottabad’s chase was never on, throttled early by Samiullah Khan Niazi. It turned out to be an evening for left-arm seamers as Samiullah dented the top order with three wickets. Abbottabad then lost three wickets with no addition to the score, including two to the excellent Shahid Nazir and at 57 for 7, the contest was long gone. Saeed Ajmal cleaned up the tail to finish with 3 for 4. Abbottabad are a traditionally weak side but were strengthened this year by the inclusion of a number of Peshawar players such as Yasir Hameed, Yasir Shah and Riffatullah Mohmand and will look to improve results.Group DKarachi Dolphins got off to a winning start making light work of Hyderabad Hawks at the National Stadium. They had much to thank the visitors for pressing the self-destruct button before crawling to 119, a target that was always going to be easy.Opener Shahzaib Hasan, a World Twenty20 winner, provided the fireworks during the chase, smashing 46 off 21 balls, including six fours and two sixes. Once Karachi had reached the halfway mark in just the fourth over, Khalid Latif continued the momentum, blitzing 32 off 15 balls. The openers’ charge was enough as the hosts sealed the win in the 10th over. Hyderabad had made a watchful start with opener Sharjeel Khan managing a near-run-a-ball 39, but three run-outs in the space of three overs meant they ended on a well below-par score. Fawad Alam was Karachi’s most successful bowler with 2 for 20.Group A Multan Tigers recorded their second consecutive win after cruising past Quetta Bears by seven wickets. Mohammad Hafeez and the tall Mohammad Irfan – at six foot ten, one of the tallest bowlers going – set it up by sharing seven wickets between them to restrict Quetta to a poor 99. Rameez Alam then scored an unbeaten half-century to guide them home within 17 overs. Irfan and Hafeez cut through the middle order to reduce Quetta to 59 for 5 and it was a position from which they never recovered. Hafeez finished with 4 for 17 while Irfan took 3 for 14 before wrapping up the innings off the penultimate ball. Multan lost Babar Ali off the first ball of the chase but Rameez piloted the innings to help them coast home.

Seamers set up Bangalore win

On a slow pitch that lacked bounce, Bangalore restricted Rajasthan to 130 before they knocked it off without much fuss to win a crucial encounter in Jaipur.

Kevin Pietersen’s fluent innings snuffed out any hopes of Rajasthan springing a surprise•Indian Premier League

On a slow pitch that lacked bounce, Royal Challengers Bangalore restricted Rajasthan Royals to 130 before they knocked it off without much fuss to win a crucial encounter in Jaipur. With this crushing win, Bangalore now move to second position in the points table. It was a disciplined performance from Bangalore who kept things simple and let Rajasthan’s top order collapse under the pressure of setting a target. Shane Warne said at the toss that he reckoned 165-170 was a par total and perhaps, the attempt to set a big target did them in. The pitch too, certainly, played its part and they lost their way.The chase was over in a blink, with Kevin Pietersen taking complete control of the innings with an entertaining and aggressive knock. He looted 18 runs in the fourth over, bowled by Kamran Khan, with the help of four boundaries – a slapped four, a muscled hit over mid-off, a scorching off-drive and a pulled six. When he collected three more boundaries in the sixth, bowled by Adam Voges, Bangalore were comfortably on course. The only hope left for Rajasthan was whether Warne could produce any magic but Pietersen and Robin Uthappa went after him in style to deliver the killer blow.Though their bowling lacked bite, it was the batsmen who let down Rajasthan today. Things went wrong right from the start when Michael Lumb was run out trying to steal a single to backward point. The new batsman Amit Paunikar fell for a first-ball duck, edging an attempted hook to the keeper. The worst shot from a top-order batsman, though, was from Naman Ojha who heaved a back-of-a-length delivery from outside off to mid-on. In a blink, Rajasthan had slipped to 21 for 3 in 3.2 overs and though Shane Watson attempted a repair job, there was never a phase of play where Rajasthan dominated.Once the top order collapsed and Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, who likes to stay beside the line and thread the off side, struggled to pierce a packed off-side field, it was obvious that the responsibility of scoring runs would fall on Watson and Yusuf Pathan. And they seemed to have a plan. Jhunjhunwala would try to hit out while Watson would drop anchor, but with Jhunjhunwala failing to get any momentum, Watson tried to force the pace, and fell. He pulled Jacques Kallis low to the right of square leg where Pietersen took a sharp catch to leave Rajasthan wobbling at 53 for 4.Much depended on Yusuf at that stage but he was kept quiet by a barrage of short-pitched deliveries. Some kicked up shoulder high, some reared towards his chest and some jumped just above his waist but, collectively, it was enough to keep him in check. He edged the pull shots, was late on attempted hooks, couldn’t connect with his upper cuts and his mode of dismissal showed his mindset. When Dale Steyn, who turned in yet another impressive spell of pace bowling, came on to bowl at him, Yusuf expected a short delivery first up and retreated well inside the crease. However, Steyn surprised him with a full delivery that curved away gently and Yusuf, rooted to his crease, couldn’t get bat to ball. It could have been worse for Rajasthan, who were struggling at 72 for 6, but Adam Voges played a calm hand, along with Abhishek Raut, to ensure they crossed 100.For Bangalore, each bowler impressed with his discipline: Pankaj Singh hit the full length and varied his pace, Vinay Kumar hit the back of length, Steyn troubled with his pace and variations in length, Kallis used his offcutters to good effect and Kumble was, well, his typical nagging self. They kept Rajasthan down to an under-par score, and Pietersen finished them off.

Celtic: Reo Hatate now in the UK

Celtic signing Reo Hatate has now landed in the UK and is set to be unveiled as a Hoops player soon, Kieran Devlin reports.

The Lowdown: Triple signing

Ange Postecoglou and Michael Nicholson have made early inroads into the club’s January business, with moves for Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Daizen Maeda already tied up.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Midfielders Hatate and Ideguchi have penned four-and-a-half-year contracts at Parkhead, whereas forward Maeda has joined on an initial loan deal with a compulsory purchase option included for the summer.

Both Maeda and Ideguchi have already been unveiled as Celtic players, and it seems as if Hatate will do the same shortly.

The Latest: Devlin’s claim

Devlin shared a post on The Athletic on Wednesday, saying: ‘understand Hatate has landed in the UK and is set to be unveiled as a Celtic player over the next few days’.

The 24-year-old, along with Maeda, has been removed from Japan’s squad for their Kirin Challenge match against Uzbekistan, with the squad made up of domestic players only.

The Verdict: Good news…

With all three now in the country and Hatate soon to be unveiled, it can only be viewed as good news ahead of Celtic’s return to action following the winter break.

The Hoops face Hibernian in 11 days, so having the Japanese trio all at Lennoxtown and involved with the squad could mean they may all have a chance to feature at Parkhead on Monday, January 17.

That will be a welcome boost for Postecoglou, who had a number of players sidelined prior to the winter break against St Johnstone through injury and Covid-19.

In other news: Celtic may now sign £4.5m-rated man on loan; would ‘separate’ Nicholson from Lawwell.

Resurgent South Zone coast to five-wicket win

Cricinfo rounds up the action from the fourth day of the 2009-10 Duleep Trophy semi-finals

Cricinfo staff29-Jan-2010Scorecard
South Zone’s resilience, through the course of the match and, in the face of early setbacks on the fourth day earned them a well-deserved five-wicket win over Central Zone in Indore. Resuming at 57 for 1, South’s chase of 291 was rocked in the first hour by Central’s seam attack. The overnight batsmen, Abhinav Mukund and Arun Karthik, were dismissed for the addition of just 15 runs. The time was ripe for a heroic rearguard, and a day after being included in the national side, Subramanian Badrinath seized the moment in style. At the other end, Manish Pandey did his cause no harm, striking a typically stroke-filled 59 with eight fours and a six. The duo added 102 in good time, giving their side the ascendancy, before RP Singh breached Pandey’s expansive drive to hit the stumps. Badrinath however, was not going to give it away and, mixing caution and aggression in the right proportions, took his side closer. He was finally sent back, 18 short of a hundred, with the target still 63 runs away. If Central entertained any thoughts of triggering a collapse, Ravichandran Ashwin quickly put paid to them, and asserted his influence on the match for the third time in three days. He smashed twelve fours in a 44-ball 59 and it was fitting that he and Muralidharen Gautam completed the remarkable comeback that they had initiated on the second day.Scorecard
While the action in Indore was edge-of-the-seat through the course of the final day, it was a slow burn to a foregone result in Rajkot, as West Zone sitting back on their monumental first-innings lead, played out a draw against North Zone. Having not enforced the follow-on, West had already killed the match as a contest, and the only interest on the final day centred around individual performances. Resuming at 56 for 1 on the final day, West batted on to accumulate 289 runs in the 75 overs that were bowled before the match was called off. In the process, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma struck attractive hundreds, and served the national selectors a reminder, albeit a day late. Rohit, in particular, was at his belligerent best, crashing five sixes in his 116 that came at a brisk strike-rate. Vikas Mishra picked his second four-wicket haul of the match, while Ravindra Jadeja helped himself to a fifty in the closing stages of play. The stalemate notwithstanding, West Zone proceed to the finals of the Duleep Trophy, where they will meet a confident South Zone.

Tuanzebe could leave Aston Villa for Napoli

Axel Tuanzebe’s season-long loan at Aston Villa could be could short, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The lowdown

The Manchester United defender is currently in the midst of his third loan stint at Villa Park. He has made 11 appearances for the Villans this season in all competitions, including six Premier League starts.

There may be an opportunity for the 24-year-old to feature on Sunday, with Tyrone Mings suspended for the trip to Brentford.

The latest

Romano revealed on Twitter that Serie A outfit Napoli have tabled a proposal to take Tuanzebe on loan for the second half of the campaign, offering United a loan fee of €400,000 (£336,220), but the Red Devils are asking for €1m (£840,550), with the defender reportedly accepting the proposed move to Italy.

The journalist tweeted: “Manchester United want €1m for Axel Tuanzebe loan to Napoli until the end of the season. Current proposal is around €400k, talks progressing.

“The player has accepted to join Napoli and he’s waiting to see what happens, as Aston Villa too.”

The verdict

Tuanzebe’s Premier League opportunities may have been limited, but it would be a blow for Gerrard to lose him.

The Villa manager said ahead of the trip to Brentford that he ‘would be delighted to keep him’, not just until the end of the season but beyond that as well. However, he did concede that it was ‘very much in Ax’s hands and Manchester United’s hands’.

Gerrard’s predecessor Dean Smith also raved about the 24-year-old, hailing his ‘unbelievable attitude’  and describing him as ‘future captain’ material, but perhaps he didn’t play him enough if Tuanzebe is ready to jump at the chance to spend the rest of the season at Napoli.

Ross Taylor signs up for Victoria

Victoria have called on Ross Taylor as a last-minute overseas replacement for the domestic Twenty20 tournament

Victoria have called on Ross Taylor, the energetic New Zealand batsman, as a last-minute overseas replacement for the domestic Twenty20 tournament that begins at the Gabba on Monday. The Bushrangers lost Sohail Tanvir to a knee injury this week and Taylor’s signature was secured just before the Christmas Eve deadline. However, Taylor is only available for the first group game against Queensland and the preliminary final – if his side makes it that far. Daniel Vettori, the New Zealand captain, has been picked up by the Bulls on a similar deal, although he won’t be playing in Brisbane on Monday. The already powerful Victoria have Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies allrounder, on their books as they aim for a place in the final, which will secure a spot in next year’s lucrative Champions League Twenty20 in India.”Both Ross and Dwayne will add an enormous amount, in terms of ability and excitement,” Victoria’s chief executive Tony Dodemaide said. “Each of them can hit a long ball, have a presence in the field and are sure to engage the fans. Their extensive international experience will be of great benefit to some of our younger guys as well.”The bowler Clint McKay is back with the side after making his Test debut last week in Perth while Dirk Nannes is returning after a long-running hamstring injury. The Bushrangers were second in the tournament last year, ending their sequence of three consecutive victories.Overseas players

Victoria – Dwayne Bravo, Ross Taylor
South Australia – Kieron Pollard, Shahid Afridi
Western Australia – Chris Gayle
New South Wales – Dwayne Smith
Queensland – Daniel Vettori
Tasmania – Rana Naved-ul-Hasan

Queensland suffered a setback when the wicketkeeper Chris Hartley was ruled out for two games with a thumb injury, allowing the understudy Ben Dunk a promotion. Andrew Symonds, who no longer plays first-class cricket, is the state’s A-list Twenty20 player while Vettori will be available for a group match later in the tournament, and the preliminary final if they repeat their performance of last year. Two Australian teams will qualify for the Champions League and it is the reason why this tournament is being treated so seriously. There has been an influx of overseas players for the event, with two allowed per team, as the states eye the big pay cheques if they can reach the final. New South Wales won last year and went on to take the Champions League in October, returning home with US$2.5m in prize-money.The Blues will look to their heavy hitters at the top of the order, where they have David Warner, Phillip Hughes and Phil Jaques, as they attempt to re-qualify for the Indian adventure. After the main men come the strong men, with Steven Smith and Ben Rohrer capable of blasting away in the middle.2008-09 standings

1st New South Wales
2nd Victoria
3rd Queensland
4th South Australia
5th Tasmania
6th Western Australia

With such a stunning line-up the Blues don’t really need an overseas player, but they have called on the West Indian Dwayne Smith to boost their all-round qualities. The Blues travel to Hobart on Wednesday to face Tasmania in their opening game.Tasmania have had no luck with their international signings. Lasith Malinga was ruled out due to Sri Lanka’s added international commitments while England’s Dimitri Mascarenhas pulled out last week due to a knee injury that requires surgery. However, they picked up Rana Naved-ul-Hasan at the last minute and he will link up with George Bailey, Brett Geeves and Tim Paine.Chris Gayle will have his first fixture on Tuesday when Western Australia play South Australia in Perth. The Warriors have a 13-man squad that includes Luke Pomersbach, who was suspended following a drink-driving, sand-dune hiding escapade in the off-season which led to a court appearance.Adam Voges captains the team and the side’s big-hitting ability excites the coach Tom Moody. “We have a significant batting line-up full of players that are well-suited to Twenty20, such as Shaun Marsh, Luke Pomersbach, Theo Doropoulos, Mitch Marsh, and Adam Voges,” Moody said. “Throw Chris Gayle into that mix, and it is an exciting prospect.”South Australia have some enviable signings, with Kieron Pollard the most wanted man in the competition, while Shahid Afridi is another of the most brutal hitters in the game. The Redbacks will also have the chance to see Shaun Tait operate over consecutive games as the limited-overs specialist faces his most important month of the year.Victoria squad Rob Quiney, Brad Hodge, David Hussey, Ross Taylor, Cameron White (capt), Dwayne Bravo, Aaron Finch, Andrew McDonald, Matthew Wade (wk), John Hastings, Jon Holland, Clint McKay, Dirk Nannes, James Pattinson.Queensland squad James Hopes, Nathan Reardon, Lee Carseldine, Andrew Symonds, Craig Philipson, Glen Batticciotto, Chris Simpson (capt), Ben Dunk (wk), Chris Hartley (wk), Ryan Harris, Ben Laughlin, Ben Cutting, Alister McDermott, Nathan Rimmington.New South Wales squad David Warner, Phillip Hughes, Phillip Jaques, Usman Khawaja, Ben Rohrer, Moises Henriques (capt), Dwayne Smith, Daniel Smith (wk), Steven Smith, Simon Keen, Grant Lambert, Dominic Thornely, Stephen O’Keefe, Mitchell Starc, Aaron Bird, Josh Hazlewood.Western Australia squad Shaun Marsh, Chris Gayle, Adam Voges (capt), Mitchell Marsh, Luke Pomersbach, Luke Ronchi (wk), David Bandy, Theo Doropoulos, Ashley Noffke, Aaron Heal, Michael Hogan, Brad Knowles, Nathan Coulter-Nile.South Australia squad Tom Cooper, Daniel Harris, Cameron Borgas, Mark Cosgrove, Shahid Afridi, Kieron Pollard, Aaron O’Brien, Graham Manou (capt, wk), Dan Christian, Mark Cleary, Jake Haberfield, Shaun Tait.Tasmania squad Tim Paine (wk), Ed Cowan, Rhett Lockyear, Michael Dighton, George Bailey (capt), Travis Birt, Alex Doolan, Luke Butterworth, John Rogers, Jeremy Smith, James Faulkner, Jason Krejza, Brendan Drew, Brett Geeves, Gerard Denton, Xavier Doherty, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan.
