Ashes markers, and Ponting the marksman

Andrew McGlashan’s Plays of the Day from the fifth ODI at Lord’s

Marker of the day
Everything about this series has been viewed through an Ashes-shaped prism. At Cardiff England were delighted when their short-ball plan worked against Michael Clarke, and here a similar method proved successful against Ricky Ponting. Australia’s captain has had problems against the short ball in recent times – stemming from a tasty head-to-head with Kemar Roach – and on this occasion he got into an awful tangle against Broad’s bouncer and gloved a catch to Craig Kieswetter. Both sides will store that memory away for Brisbane.Timely wicket of the day
Tim Paine has struggled for fluency throughout the series and it came to a head at Lord’s with a laborious 90-ball 54. Setting a platform is one thing, and Paine had to withstand some testing early swing, but sometimes a batsman is better off hitting out or getting out. Shortly after reaching his fifty Paine tried to break free with a reverse sweep off Graeme Swann, only to see the ball turn and take off stump to complete an ugly departure. However, it was probably the best thing for Australia because it brought together their game-changers, Mike Hussey and Shaun Marsh.Gear change of the day
Often batting sides opt to take their Powerplay in the final overs of the innings without much thought, but today Australia showed some smart thinking by taking it early. The restrictions were called for in the 39th over with the innings still struggling for momentum and Marsh, having laboured to 15 from 29 balls, suddenly found top gear with 18 off four deliveries and the five overs went for 63. However, it didn’t stop there. The surge Australia gained from those overs extended through the rest of the innings to the extent that the last 11 overs brought a mammoth 130 runs. That would be an exceptional performance even in a Twenty20 game.Thunderbolt(s) of the day
Shaun Tait has been pushing the speed gun towards three figures since his return to the side at Old Trafford and this time he broke cricket’s equivalent of the sound barrier with a delivery recorded byTV to be 100.1mph (161kph). The landmark was reached with the fifth ball of his opening over as he raced in against Kieswetter, who fended the ball into the leg-side having already been beaten by two unplayable leg-cutters. Until this innings Tait had been operating in two-over bursts, but this timehe kept going and in his third over he castled Andrew Strauss with a vicious late-swinger before proving far too swift for the promoted Michael Yardy.Catch of the day
Despite losing their top three to the combined pace of Tait and Ryan Harris, England still had Eoin Morgan. He was taking his time to get settled when he latched onto a short ball from James Hopes and pulled it towards deep midwicket. Marsh sprinted around the boundary, stretched to his right and reached the catch, but as he slammed into the ground the ball bobbled out of his hands. However, in an amazing stroke of fortune, Marsh managed to grasp it into his chest and Australia had their key wicket.Direct hit of the day
It hasn’t been the happiest of series for Ponting – notwithstanding his 92 at The Oval – but when his team needed a touch of inspiration with Paul Collingwood and Tim Bresnan building a threatening stand he was on hand – literally. Bresnan drove the ball into the covers and immediately set off, but Ponting didn’t have far to move. From that moment there was only one winner. He collected the ball with his back to the non-striker’s stumps, swivelled, paused for balance, and hit direct to catch Bresnan short.Eleven of the day
England’s selection during this series has been a model of consistency with the same team taking the field in all five matches. It was the first time England had gone through a five-match series with an unchanged side, and only the seventh time in history that it had happened for any team. Clearly a winning habit helped early on and even though the series was wrapped up after three games Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower decided to leave Ian Bell, Ajmal Shahzad and Ryan Sidebottom onthe sidelines.

Newcastle transfer news on Lewis

Luke Edwards has now revealed some Newcastle United transfer news involving Jamal Lewis.

The Lowdown: Left out

In an update shared from the official website of the St. James’ Park faithful on Thursday, Lewis is now one of three players to have been left out of their 25-man squad for the second half of the Premier League season.

Ciaran Clark and Isaac Hayden also miss out to make way for new signings Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Dan Burn.

This feels a pretty significant moment for Lewis in particular, being younger than his two teammates and hailed as ‘excellent’ and ‘so athletic’ by Eddie Howe.

The Latest: Leaving?

Taking to Twitter, The Daily Telegraph journalist Edwards has revealed that Lewis will now be going out on loan abroad, after being left out of the squad:

“I believe Jamal Lewis will be heading abroad on loan after he was left out of #nufc 25-man squad.”

Some transfer windows are still open, such as in Turkey, Switzerland and Russia.

The Verdict: Let him go

After the North East club brought in left-back Targett from Aston Villa on Transfer Deadline Day, it should now pave way for Lewis to go.

They already have cover in that position in Matt Ritchie, and Lewis needs to try and rekindle some form elsewhere now that he will not be playing top flight games.

The Northern Ireland international currently ranks in the bottom six Magpies players in terms of performance in the league so far this term, and with only five appearances made in total (WhoScored), needs to get some game time elsewhere.

He could have gone on loan to Birmingham City in the Championship, but with the domestic window now shut, going abroad is his only other option.

South Africa allrounder Wayne Parnell will begin his return from injury with the South Africa A side on its tour of Sri Lanka in August. Parnell tore his groin while warming up for an IPL match in March and was forced to miss the ICC World Twenty20 and South Africa’s tour of the West Indies as a result.”It is important that Wayne gets as much game time as possible before the Proteas resume their international season against Zimbabwe, Pakistan and India,” Andrew Hudson, the CSA selection convener, said. “He has been out of cricket for a long time and needs quality time in the middle.”Thami Tsolekile has been retained as captain but will return to South Africa after the first two one-day matches to prepare for the Champions’ League in September. The selectors have stuck with the same group of players that beat Bangladesh A in two four-day matches earlier this year and won the triangular one-day tournament that included West Indies A.”We were very pleased with the way the young and inexperienced squad developed on that tour with one of them, David Miller, going on to represent the Proteas,” Hudson said. “Consistency and continuity is an important part of our selection policy.”Stephen Cook, who compiled a South African record score of 390 in the course of scoring over 1,000 runs during the summer first-class season, is the only newcomer in the four-day side.Four-day squad: Thami Tsolekile (capt), Stephen Cook, Dean Elgar, Quinton Friend, Heino Kuhn, Ethy Mbhalati, Wayne Parnell, Vernon Philander, Rilee Rossouw, Rusty Theron, Thandi Tshabalala, Jonathan Vandiar, Stiaan van Zyl.One-day squad: Thami Tsolekile (capt), Ryan Bailey, Dean Elgar, Colin Ingram, Rory Kleinveldt, Ethy Mbhalati, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Vernon Philander, Rilee Rossouw, Rusty Theron, Thandi Tshabalala, Jonathan Vandiar, Morne van Wyk, Stiaan van Zyl.

Seamers peg back Warwickshire

Kent seamers Simon Cook and Matt Coles claimed four wickets apiece as Warwickshire were dismissed for only 250 in their County Championship Division One clash on a bright, yet breezy opening day in Canterbury

04-May-2010
ScorecardKent seamers Simon Cook and Matt Coles claimed four wickets apiece as Warwickshire were dismissed for only 250 in their County Championship Division One clash on a bright, yet breezy opening day in Canterbury. The chill wind that forced umpires Barry Dudleston and Neil Mallender to don black gloves all day, also helped Coles and Cook to swing the ball late and cause Warwickshire’s batsmen headaches throughout a first innings that lasted barely five and a half hours.By the close Kent had reached 43 for the loss of their captain Rob Key and will go into the second day facing a deficit of 207 with nine wickets intact. After luckless opening stints by Amjad Khan and South African Test legend Makhaya Ntini, on his home debut, Khan switched to the Pavilion End to hurry left-handed Ian Westwood into a cramped pull that spooned up to be caught at mid-wicket and make it 51 for one.Just when Kent’s decision to field first was coming into question, so former Middlesex right-armer Cook made further in-roads on his way to figures of 4 for 66. He had England’s Ian Bell well held at long leg off a top-edged hook for 10, then, to the last ball before lunch, he enticed Darren Maddy (39) to follow an away-swinger and edge to keeper Geraint Jones.Four more wickets fell in the mid-session, three of them leg before. Khan trapped Jim Troughton (one) three overs after the interval then Coles came on at 2.15pm and as fifth change to post career-best figures of 4 for 55 from his 14 overs.A muscular, right-armer from Maidstone, 19-year-old Coles is affiliated to his home town Kent League club, The Mote, and this was easily his most impressive stint to date for the county first team. He bowled an impressive line and nagging length and nipped the ball around off the seam to trap Rikki Clarke (eight) with an off-cutter and then catch Tim Ambrose (14) on the crease and also flush in front.Cook returned to the party just before tea to have Chris Woakes (11) caught behind and Coles took his tally to four soon after the resumption by feathering Jonathan Trott’s off stump with one that nipped back through the gate of an expansive drive and then having Naqaash Tahir (eight) caught low down at third slip.Trott, with 67 in a shade over two hours, was comfortably Warwickshire’s top-scorer. Neil Carter’s belligerent 43 included the only six of the day off Cook and helped the visitors to their second batting bonus point, but the bowler soon had his revenge by having the left-hander caught behind. In the 13 remaining overs Kent lost Key for 18, caught behind by Ambrose off Woakes though the former England man appeared disappointed by the decision as he trooped off with his side’s score on 36.

Rangers fans slam Scott Wright v Livingston

Many Glasgow Rangers fans criticised the performance of Scott Wright in their 1-0 win against Livingston in the Premiership on Wednesday night.

It was a game in which the hosts were certainly not at their best at Ibrox but managed to scrape all three points courtesy of a late goal from Scott Arfield.

There were a few disappointing performances for Rangers, but Wright stood out among a bad pack.

The former Aberdeen winger lost out on five of his duels in total and failed to record a single successful dribble, also being unsuccessful with three of his four crosses (SofaScore).

Wright also lost possession of the ball 13 times, the joint-sixth most out of his teammates, and he was hauled off for Ryan Jack shortly after the goal was scored.

Rangers fans slam Wright

These Rangers fans slammed the 24-year-old’s display on Twitter, with one Light Blues supporter going as far as to claim that he was ‘shocking’ last night:

Unbeatable Victoria prepare for Shield victory

Victoria enacted the Sheffield Shield’s version of torture on Queensland as they moved closer to lifting the trophy

Victoria enacted the Sheffield Shield’s version of torture on Queensland as they moved closer to lifting the trophy. The Bushrangers, who only need a draw to take the prize, finally closed their innings 45 minutes before stumps on the fourth day after gorging 8 for 591 declared. That left Queensland with an official target of 640, but they will have to settle for batting out the final day for a draw, which is the same thing that happened last year. They started well by reaching 0 for 29 at stumps, with Ryan Broad on 9 and Wade Townsend 16.David Hussey led the way with an aggressive 168 and with Cameron White, who fell for 89, they took the game well beyond Queensland’s reach. When Hussey, who hit 18 fours and four sixes during his 198 balls, and White fell with the score at 481 the Bushrangers had an advantage of 529. But they weren’t finished.Apart from Andrew McDonald, who was unbeaten on 44, the only other person the extra time was useful for was Cameron Boyce, the 20-year-old legspinner. He was able to record his first five-wicket haul in his second first-class game, finishing with 6 for 181 off 44 overs as he benefitted from the charging batsmen. He picked up both openers on the first day but had to wait until White somehow managed to play him on when defending a long way outside off stump. Matthew Wade (20) skied to mid-off and John Hastings (26) went down the pitch and missed a slog to midwicket to be stumped.Boyce’s sixth wicket was a mystery to Damien Wright, who was given out caught behind but missed the ball spinning out of the footmarks. Overall it was a promising sign for Queensland’s future, although being a slow bowler at the Gabba is not much fun.
