Leeds: Danny Murphy criticises Rodrigo

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has criticised Leeds United forward Rodrigo over one moment in the 4-0 defeat against Manchester City.

The lowdown: Humbling loss for Leeds

The Whites ended up on the wrong side of a mauling at Elland Road despite being competitive in the contest for the most part.

Goals from Rodri, Nathan Ake, Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho condemned Jess Marsch’s side to a defeat which leaves Leeds 17th in the Premier League, five points clear of Everton, who have two games in hand.

Despite the heavy scoreline, the hosts were able to carve out opportunities to attack, although one pundit was less than impressed with the quality in the final third.

The latest: Murphy slams Rodrigo

Speaking live on Match of the Day (Saturday, April 30), former Liverpool ace Murphy slammed Rodrigo for his inability to find Raphinha and take advantage of a promising moment.

The 45-year-old fumed: “These are the moments you don’t get very often against the top sides. In the first half, they have quite a few of them. No awareness, don’t even think he knew he was there. Ends up being a poor shot.”

Overall the Spaniard lost possession 14 times (third-most of any Leeds player), misplaced nine of his 32 passes (28%) and was replaced on 83 minutes following a 6.60 rated display from Sofascore.

The verdict: Poor showing

Despite the calibre of opposition, this was a below-par performance from Rodrigo and his team-mates which leaves Marsch’s side fully embroiled in a relegation battle in the run-in.

The 31-year-old remains on six goals and one assist from 30 appearances this season in the frequent absences of Patrick Bamford, a far from fearsome tally from the versatile Spaniard. Indeed, criticisms like the one from Murphy might explain why goals have been so hard to come by for him, if he keeps making the wrong decisions in attack.

With fixtures against Arsenal and Chelsea up next, Leeds and indeed Rodrigo will have to learn from their squandered chances fast and capitalise on each and every one in order to ease their relegation fears.

Kochi's fate to be decided in Wednesday IPL meeting

The IPL governing council will meet on Wednesday in Nagpur to decide the fate of the Kochi franchise

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Oct-2010

The delay in resolving the Kochi issue won’t have an impact on player auctions, says Shashank Manohar•International Cricket Council

The IPL governing council will meet on Wednesday in Nagpur to decide the fate of the Kochi franchise. “The only point on the agenda is Kochi,” one of the BCCI officials said on the content of the short notice sent to the five-member panel.Last week the two warring factions in the Kochi consortium had, through their solicitors, submitted individual replies to the BCCI showcause notice (on October 12) asking them to register a company and settle their internal dispute. Though both the groups – Rendezvous Sports and rival group led by Anchor’s Mehul Shah – tried hard to come to a settlement through numerous meetings, the exercise proved futile as neither group was willing to come down from its original demand. Still, reportedly, both asked for a 10-day extension from the board in a last-ditch attempt to save the franchise from getting terminated.Shashank Manohar, BCCI president, said that his legal team was studying the replies closely and would come to a decision at some point this week. Manohar also clarified that the Kochi case was completely different to Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab, the two franchises terminated on October 10. “Kochi have not breached any agreement, our issues with them are different,” Manohar said. He stressed that the the main problem with Kochi was the “huge differences” between the five-partner consortium which bid $333.33 million earlier this March to become the tenth franchise in the league.Despite the Kochi dispute taking longer than intended to get resolved, Manohar was confident that it would have no impact on the player auctions.

Liverpool: O Jogo shares Carmo update

Liverpool are set to reignite their interest in Sporting Braga defender David Carmo according to a report from Portuguese newspaper O Jogo (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown: A series of unfortunate events

The Reds were heavily linked with a move for the 22-year-old back in January 2021 when Jurgen Klopp’s squad was plagued by defensive injuries, with Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez all long-term absentees at the time.

Liverpool instead completed a double deadline day swoop for Ben Davies from Preston North End and Ozan Kabak on a loan deal from FC Schalke to join Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams as the only recognised centre-backs at Anfield.

Soon after missing out on a move to Merseyside, Carmo suffered a broken leg in the Taca de Portugal semi-final against FC Porto in an incident with now Kop favourite Luis Diaz.

Having made a successful return to action, an interest could once again be arising from the Anfield club…

The latest: Contact made

As per O Jogo, translated by SW, Liverpool didn’t ‘erase the name’ of the Portuguese youth international following their initial interest.

It’s claimed that scouts from the club continue to ‘follow closely’ Carmo’s development and have already made contact following a ‘recommendation’ from Klopp. New sporting director Julian Ward could make the powerful defender an early transfer target ahead of the summer window.

The report also states that the 6 foot 5 powerhouse, who has been likened to Van Dijk no less, is ‘very likely’ to leave Braga should a €40million (£33.7million) release clause be met.

The verdict: Positional overkill?

After the arrival and subsequent instant impact of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, Klopp currently boasts four high quality central defensive options in the Liverpool squad.

Albeit both Matip and Van Dijk are over 30, neither are showing signs of an early demise and look set to play a huge role over the coming years.

However, should Gomez become restless with his own spot in the pecking order and seek pastures new, the Reds would need a replacement and that is where Carmo may come in.

Possessing strong aerial, tackling and passing ability (WhoScored), the talented seven-cap Portugal Under 20 starlet appears ready-made to enhance Klopp’s defensive department and at the mooted release clause would represent supreme value for money.

Flynn, Chakabva, Franklin star in high-scoring draw

Lively scoring rates and sporting declarations were not sufficient to generate a result in the first unofficial Test between New Zealand A and Zimbabwe A in Harare

Lively scoring rates and sporting declarations were not sufficient to generate a result in the first unofficial Test between New Zealand A and Zimbabwe A in Harare. The hosts elected to field, and their decision was initially vindicated as the pedigree opening pair of Tim McIntosh and Peter Ingram departed cheaply on the first morning. However, Jamie How, fresh from a personally successful Champions League Twenty20 where he led Central Districts’ winless campaign, counterattacked with a stroke-filled 92 off 96 balls. Zimbabwe’s woes were complete when Daniel Flynn, who has played 16 Tests for New Zealand, went after their bowling in equally aggressive fashion. The pair added a bright 217 runs in 33.5 overs, a stand that set the tone for the rest of the match.Flynn smashed five sixes and 16 fours in his innings and was fifth man out for 162 off 175 balls. Gareth Hopkins held the lower order together with a watchful 50 as New Zealand finished with 426, scored at 4.22 runs per over. Mountaineers seamer Njabulo Ncube and the 14-ODI old Malcolm Waller chipped in with three wickets each for the home team.Unlike the visitors, Zimbabwe’s top-order batsmen did not capistalise on starts, with Steve Marillier and Vusi Sibanda falling for scores of 38 and 46. Left-arm spinner Nick Beard caused a lot of problems as the hosts stuttered to 224 for 6 on the back of Craig Ervine’s 55. Then followed a strong rearguard led by wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva, who has represented Zimbabwe in the shorter versions of the game. His fourth first-class ton, supported by Timycen Maruma’s 59 helped the hosts reduce the deficit to manageable proportions, before they declared their innings in search of a result.New Zealand’s second innings ran into early trouble, and at 65 for 4 in the second session of the third day, Zimbabwe would have nursed ambitions of forcing a win. However, they had to contend with the captain James Franklin, whose batting has come a long way in the last couple of seasons. Franklin stroked his 12th first-class ton, and Hopkins weighed in with a solid contribution once again to lead the visitors out of trouble. Franklin declared the innings closed at 280 for 5, setting the hosts a target of 342 in a little over two sessions.Tino Mawoyo launched the pursuit with his second first-class ton, an unbeaten 125 off 160 balls with 12 fours and two sixes, but a steady fall of wickets at the other end meant that Zimbabwe could never step up gears. With the score 243 for 5 after 54 overs, the game was called off, but despite the stalemate, both teams had reasons to be pleased with their efforts.

Everton given big injury boost vs Leicester

Everton have been handed a huge injury boost ahead of their clash with Leicester this evening at Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

Frank Lampard took to his pre-match press conference to give an update on the availability of Donny van de Beek following his absence due to a small grade thigh injury sustained in the warm-up ahead of the West Ham United game earlier this month.

The Toffees boss told the press:

“He was not well for a period, then he had an injury pre-West Ham [before being unable to play against parent club Manchester United].

“He had a baby girl last week, which is great for him. It’s nice for us to have him to be back in the squad now.”

Frank will be buzzing

There is no doubt that Lampard will be buzzing to have an almost fully fit squad at this stage of the season, especially the return of a first-team player like Van de Beek who has become involved in Everton’s pursuit for safety from relegation since joining the squad in January.

Despite only making six appearances so far, the 25-year-old midfielder has played an important role in the centre of the pitch when he has been available to play in the team.

His most notable 90-minute performance came from his Everton debut when the Man United loanee delivered a fantastic defensive midfield performance to seal a 3-0 victory over Leeds United.

According to Squawka, the Dutch star had an 89.5% pass accuracy, made ten ball recoveries, won seven duels, won the most possessions in the middle third, made the most tackles (4) and created one chance, proving how effective and influential he can be to this team.

With that being said, Lampard now has the opportunity to unleash Van de Beek back into his midfield three tonight thanks to his return to fitness, and if he can emulate his first performance upon his return against Brendan Rodgers’ side tonight, it could make a huge difference to Everton’s chances of survival.

Everton can go six points clear of 18th place Burnley this evening if they can secure all three points at Goodison Park, which would put them in a good position to avoid their first-ever Premier League relegation this season.

A equipe suplente no treino foi a seguinte: Fabiano, Pedrão, Emerson e Luan Cândido; Thiago Santos, Bruno Henrique; Guerra, Scarpa e Fernando; Keno.

Newcastle hold talks with Alex Lowry’s agent

Newcastle United have held talks with the agent of Rangers teenager Alex Lowry, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Lowry profiled

Lowry is 18 years of age and is primarily an attacking midfielder who can also play as a right-winger or even in a deeper midfield role.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Scot has already made four senior appearances for Rangers, scoring once and providing one assist. Former Ibrox boss Graeme Murty labelled Lowry’s self-confidence as ‘remarkable’, with reports back in February suggesting the teenager has turned down a three-and-a-half-year deal at Ibrox.

His current contract expires in 2023, and it looks as if Newcastle are now leading the race for his services.

The Latest: Hotel meeting

Football Insider shared an update regarding Lowry and Newcastle on Monday morning after being informed by a recruitment source.

They claimed that head of recruitment Steve Nickson met Lowry’s agent in a hotel prior to Newcastle’s Premier League win over Wolves earlier this month.

The report stated that the Magpies are at the front of the queue for the Rangers youngster, who also has interest elsewhere.

The Verdict: Shrewd move

It looks as if Lowry could be a future star with a number of top-tier sides keen on his services, so Newcastle’s decision to meet with his agent and outline their plans could turn out to be a shrewd move.

It would be interesting to see what Newcastle would do with Lowry, should a move to St. James’ Park go through. He already has senior experience in Scotland, and with Eddie Howe having just two attacking midfielders on the books, it could present an opportunity for Lowry to flirt between the club’s Under-23 ranks and first-team squad.

A clear pathway through to first-team football should be outlined by the Magpies, so it looks as if this could be a transfer to watch closely.

In other news: Newcastle now want to sign ’emerging superstar’ for Howe; Staveley has already spoken with agent.

Having contributed an innings-reviving 72 on the first day, Wallace again proved a thorn in Gloucestershire sides, realising three figures from 116 balls, with 13 fours and a six. He eventually fell to the second new ball for 113 -to give the impressive Hussain figures of 3 for 60.

Newcastle transfer news on Dybala

Newcastle United have reportedly now ‘moved’ to try and sign Paulo Dybala in the summer.

The Lowdown: Out of contract

Dybala is out of contract in the summer, and so he is expected to leave Juventus at the end of the season as a free agent.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Currently rated at £36m by Transfermarkt, whoever is able to sign him will be getting a real bargain on their hands – the Argentina star has scored eight times in 20 Serie A starts this season, racking up a huge 3.7 shots, 1.5 key passes and 1.7 dribbles per game (Whoscored).

The Latest: Newcastle move

As per Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), both the St. James’ Park faithful and Arsenal have now ‘moved’ for Dybala, with his preference to move abroad from Italy.

However, they have not ‘gone beyond the show of interest’, but would have a chance of signing him from a financial perspective.

The Verdict: No-brainer

To get a player of Dybala’s quality for free is surely a no-brainer, perhaps regardless of whatever his potentially remarkable wage demands are.

Hailed as ‘world-class’ by former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson, the Argentina international has won as many as five Serie A titles with the Old Lady, as well as many other accolades (Transfermarkt).

He has over 200 combined goals and assists for club and country over the course of his career so far, and at 28 years of age, is still at the peak of his powers.

Nonetheless, bringing him in through the door on Tyneside would certainly send out a big message to the rest of the world that the Magpies mean business.
