Pottker e Damião voltam aos trabalhos no Internacional

Na manhã desta quarta-feira, o Internacional trabalhou no CT Parque Gigante e o técnico Odair Hellmann ganhou duas novidades.

Watson surplus to series unless he can bowl

Shane Watson is surplus to Australia’s requirements for the Test series against South Africa unless he can prove himself fit enough to bowl

Shane Watson is an increasingly doubtful starter for the second Test in Adelaide after the team performance manager Pat Howard stated he would be surplus to Australia’s requirements against South Africa unless he can prove himself fit enough to bowl.In the most blunt declaration yet that Watson needs to retain his allrounder status in order to remain an integral part of Australia’s planning, Howard stated that John Inverarity’s selection panel had placed great store in the ability of batsmen to bowl, particularly when faced with a batting line-up as deep as South Africa’s.The selectors are currently discussing the composition of their squad for the Adelaide Test ahead of a likely announcement on Friday, and Watson cannot be expected to be considered unless he proves himself capable of bowling plenty of overs in the second match of the series.Watson is understood to be thinking conservatively about returning to the bowling crease, making the Perth Test or even the Sri Lanka series that follows the South Africa Tests more likely avenues for his international return.”Shane is progressing, if the Test match was tomorrow he wouldn’t be playing, but he’s progressing and I think when the team goes in on Sunday we’ll have a far better indication of where he’s at,” Howard said in Brisbane.”For different series there are different policies, there’s a position the selection panel take. There are times over the past 12 months where he has been considered in both roles and sometimes as a batsman only, but very much at Adelaide they’re looking to his bowling and his fitness around bowling, to see if he’s capable of doing both.”As you saw during the Test match the other day, a fair few bowlers were called on, and Shane’s value to be able to do both is pretty strong. It would go against him significantly [if he can’t bowl].”In seeking to assess Watson’s fitness, Cricket Australia had considered making him available to play for New South Wales in a domestic limited overs match against Victoria at North Sydney Oval on Sunday, but that possibility now appears remote. Instead Watson will need to show his ability to bowl in the nets, before following up with further training spells in Adelaide.”The value and the balance of the team is what the selection panel talk about, it’s the panel’s call on how they come together on this,” Howard said. “They assess all of that, the value of it, I know John Inverarity looks very much at what is our ability to bowl lots and lots of overs.”We were in a pretty unique position the other day when Rob Quiney bowled for us and doesn’t bowl for Victoria, so the ability for people to take up some bowling slack credibly is important. Without making it a Shane Watson conversation, the ability to take overs up was pretty well demonstrated in the first Test.”Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood can again be expected to be part of the team in Adelaide, even if the selectors choose not to change the bowling line-up that looked far more threatening in the second innings of the Brisbane Test than the first. Starc and Hazlewood are currently bowling for NSW against the Bushrangers in a Sheffield Shield fixture at the SCG.”We had a fair few bowlers around the squad in the lead-up to the Test,” Howard said. “Josh Hazlewood was there as well as Mitchell, so we’re very much making sure guys are ingrained in the squad. We did that all last year, so we want that extra bowler around to get involved in the culture, and to make sure they’re ready to do the job required.”

Players welcome BCB's contracts decision

BCB’s decision to give contracts to 120 cricketers from January next year is being welcomed as a step towards finally making cricket an inclusive sport

Mohammad Isam02-Jul-2012The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) decision to give contracts to 120 cricketers from January 2013 is being welcomed as a step towards finally making cricket an inclusive sport, dismantling the “winner-takes-all” system and decentralising cricket in the country. Cricketers say it will take the sport to the grassroots as it has not done in the past four decades. The development was a huge boost to the morale of many cricketers who have endured financial uncertainity. For one such domestic performer, Enamul Haque jr, the rest of his cricket career promises to be different.”It is a positive move for Bangladesh cricket,” Enamul told ESPNcricinfo. “For the next generation of cricketers, it will be a massive encouragement. There is always the motivation to play cricket and to play for the country, but to have a salary is a massive boost. When we used to play in the Under-19s or Academy, there wasn’t much money so this will help the youngsters.”Enamul, a 27-year-old left-arm spinner, was the leading wicket-taker in the 2011-12 National Cricket League and is also the only Bangladesh bowler to take more than 300 first-class wickets. Enamul, however, hasn’t played for Bangladesh since 2009 and had to play club cricket in England for sustenance.”When I saw the news last night I was really happy. I can see that everyone here in the Bangladesh A camp is equally delighted,” Enamul said. “It should have happened a few years ago, but finally the board has taken this decision. In Sri Lanka I think 70-odd cricketers are contracted with the board.”Another fringe player Shamsur Rahman, who has never played for Bangladesh but was the third highest run-scorer in this year’s first-class competition, echoed Enamul’s sentiments. However, Rahman hoped to see the initiative implemented soon, primarily because the BCB has often talked about decentralisation but never gone forward with it.”It should have happened before but I’m happy that they have finally taken this initiative. I would urge them to fulfil this, and not just keep it as a proposal,” Shamsur said. “It will create a lot of competition for places in the tournaments, players wouldn’t just turn up and play. And I can predict that the level of competition and quality will go up with this new system.”Despite being a popular game, cricket in Bangladesh has always maintained geographical and economic exclusivity. It was a Dhaka-based sport that had players mainly from colleges and universities with affluent backgrounds. Gradually, the game gained popularity in cities like Chittagong and Khulna; the biggest boost arrived between 1997 and 2000, when Bangladesh won the ICC Trophy and gained Test status. But the Dhaka leagues, with the advantage of superior infrastructure, have been the major attraction for professional cricketers. Although, cricket tournaments are played at union and divisional levels, the lack of organisation meant that major districts, like Mymensingh, were left without a proper cricket completion for years. The introduction of the National Cricket League (NCL) in 1999 didn’t make much of a difference and only the national-level cricketers benefitted financially from the BCB contracts. However, the payments have increased significantly in the Dhaka Premier League over the years with a few uncapped cricketers earning up to Tk 20 lakh ($25,000) per season, the average being Tk 5 lakh ($6250). In comparison, the players in this season’s first-class competition got Tk 10,000 ($125) per game in the first round, Tk 15,000 ($188) in the second round and Tk 20,000 ($250) in the finals, prompting the media to dub the NCL as a ‘picnic tournament’. The proposed salary structure would give much-needed financial security to the players. The decision, which requires a financial commitment of Tk 35 million ($437,500) per year according to board chief Mustafa Kamal, came after the BCB secured a sponsorship deal worth $14 million for the next four years with the Sahara group.Apart from the players’ benefitting, the BCB’s decision to appoint former cricketers as operations managers in different regions is likely to bring professionalism in the organisation of regional cricket.

A pressão existe.

Australia to make their Canberra debut

Australia will play an international match in Canberra for the first time next summer, as part of the national capital’s centenary celebrations

Australia will play an international match in Canberra for the first time next summer, as part of the national capital’s centenary celebrations. Cricket Australia and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government have agreed that Manuka Oval will host an ODI as part of the 2012-13 Commonwealth Bank Series, although it is yet to be confirmed who Australia’s opponent will be.Sri Lanka and West Indies are scheduled to visit Australia for the one-day portion of the summer, which is expected to take place in January-February, ahead of Australia’s Test tour of India. Sri Lanka have played an ODI in Canberra already, against India in 2007-08, and it was only the second international held at Manuka Oval, which also hosted South Africa and Zimbabwe during the 1992 World Cup.Canberra could also be in line to become a venue for the 2015 World Cup, to be shared between Australia and New Zealand. Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland said a planned upgrade to the ground would hold it in good stead to become a more regular international venue in future.”This is an historic moment for cricket in the nation’s capital and a great way to help celebrate the Centenary of Canberra,” Sutherland said. “Canberra continues to play an important role in Australian cricket producing some of our best national players and hosting the annual Prime Minister’s XI match.”The ACT government’s commitment to upgrading Manuka Oval will not only help to position it to host future international and domestic cricket matches, including matches in the 2015 Cricket World Cup, but it will also help grow the game of cricket in Canberra and surrounding areas which is critical to our vision for cricket to be Australia’s favourite sport.”Apart from hosting the annual Prime Minister’s XI match and occasional tour games, Canberra has largely been off the radar of elite cricket in the past few years. The ACT fielded a side known as the Comets in Australia’s domestic one-day competition in the final three years of the 1990s, but the team did not last into the 21st century. The city has helped develop some of Australia’s current Test cricketers, though. The wicketkeeper Brad Haddin learnt his cricket in the Canberra area and played for the Comets before attracting the attention of New South Wales. The offspinner Nathan Lyon also has fond memories of Manuka Oval, where he was a groundsman while playing club cricket in Canberra, which led to him spotted by South Australia.

A five-wicket haul by offspinner Anisa Mohammed helped West Indies Women complete an easy victory over Sri Lanka Women in the first ODI in Bridgetown, in the three-match one-day series. Anisa had Shashikala Siriwardene caught behind for her first wicket, which broke a 67-run fourth-wicket partnership between Siriwardene and captain Dilani Manodara. Anisa followed up with the wicket of Manodara in her next over, triggering a collapse as Sri Lanka lost seven wickets for 45 runs and fell 88 short of their target of 229.Batting first, West Indies built their total around half-centuries by Stafanie Taylor, Shanel Daley and captain Merissa Aguilleira. Daley shared a 78-run partnership with Taylor after the fall of opener Juliana Nero early in the match. Later, Daley was involved in another half-century partnership with Aguilleira for the fourth wicket. Aguilleira’s quick 62 off 63 balls helped West Indies to increase the scoring-rate and add 108 in the last 19.3 overs.
