Big PictureIn a clash between the runners-up of the Big Bash League, Perth Scorchers, and South Africa’s T20 champions, the Lions, there is some common ground that the teams share, although their situations are different. Both have new coaches but for different reasons. The Scorchers will be coached by Justin Langer after a controversy during last year’s Champions League, resulted in the resignation of the coach and captain. The Lions, on the other hand, have had a change in fortunes after they ended a five-season trophy drought with a win in the T20 competition earlier in the year under new coach Geoff Toyana. Both teams also have decent spin attacks. The Scorchers have Brad Hogg, Ashton Agar, Michael Beer and Ashton Turner, the only right-arm spinner in the attack. The Lions, on the other hand, have Imran Tahir and Aaron Phangiso in the squad. The difference lies in Hogg’s experience on Indian soil, gained from tours for Australia and IPL matches for Rajasthan Royals. Phangiso was the leading wicket-taker for Lions in the CLT20 held in South Africa last year, but bowling on Indian pitches will pose a steeper challenge. However, the Scorchers have a depleted squad this time, depriving them of depth in batting and pace bowling. Shaun and Mitchell Marsh are out due to injured hamstrings, strike bowler Alfonso Thomas is with Somerset and two other players – Nathan Coulter-Nile and Michael Hussey – are representing their IPL teams, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, respectively. Lions’ will only miss Chris Morris to Super Kings and their pace attack comprises Hardus Viljoen, Sohail Tanvir and Lonwabo Tsotsobe. Both teams have another similarity that may trouble them: lack of experience in India. Barring Hogg, captain Simon Katich is the only player the Scorchers can look to for knowledge of subcontinent conditions. Lions have been elevated by the form of Quinton de Kock but his struggle in subcontinent conditions, 95 runs from six matches in Sri Lanka and six runs in three matches in the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad, will bother him.Players to watchAdam Voges may rescue the Scorchers’ fortunes with his hard-hitting batting and part-time bowling. For a squad that misses at least three frontline batsmen, Voges could prove to be the pillar they can rely on and a run-machine they can resort look to for quick-hitting. His T20 strike rate of 131.13 from 117 matches at an average 31.56, including 12 fifties, is hard to ignore.Imran Tahir, a bowler who has played ODIs only in the subcontinent, will lead the Lions’ spin attack. On an Indian pitch against the Scorchers’ inexperienced batsmen, Tahir could prove to be a trump card. He has the experience of playing in different conditions around the world and a successful tournament would do justice to his talent.

Unheralded off-spinner Ateeq Javid claimed career-best Twenty20 figures of 4 for 17 as Warwickshire beat Gloucestershire by six wickets in a one-sided encounter at Cheltenham. If a full-house crowd of 5,000 expected to witness a run-fest at a traditionally high-scoring venue, they were made to rethink as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 96 in 18.4 overs on a slow pitch that offered assistance to spin.Warwickshire made relatively quick work of chasing, reaching their target with 2.5 overs to spare thanks to a match-winning knock of 33 from Varun Chopra.Having had an opportunity to assess the pitch, Warwickshire’s captain adopted a low-risk approach, scoring a majority of his runs behind square and sharing in stands of 27, 29 and 27 with Will Porterfield, Laurie Evans and Rikki Clarke respectively to render Warwickshire’s second win in five games a certainty.Former England one-day international Clarke saw the visitors home with an unbeaten 22 from 20 balls.Gloucestershire’s chances of making the quarter-finals are all but gone following a fourth defeat in five games. Just as they did when losing to Somerset and Worcestershire in previous outings, they lost early wickets and never recovered from 29 for 3 in the fifth over.Openers Hamish Marshall and Michael Klinger surrendered their wickets to poor shots, the former hoisting 21-year-old Javid to long-on, the latter driving a half volley from Clarke straight to cover.Tempted by a short-pitched delivery from England international Chris Woakes, Ian Cockbain then holed out to Evans on the deep square leg boundary as the Powerplay yielded a wholly inadequate 33 runs. Worse followed for the home side when they lost a further three batsmen for the addition of three runs in a calamitous seven-ball spell that reduced their innings to tatters.Overseas signing Dan Christian, yet to make a meaningful contribution since arriving from Australia, suffered another failure, chipping a delivery that stopped on him from Javid to short midwicket for 6.In-form left-hander Chris Dent departed later in the same over, sweeping lazily to deep square leg, having scored 33 at a run a ball with four fours. Benny Howell was bowled by Steffan Piolet’s seam up and James Fuller gave offspinner Evans the charge and was comprehensively stumped by teenager Peter McKay, at which point Gloucestershire were 71 for 7 in the 14th over and inall kinds of trouble.Alex Gidman struck the only six of the innings high over long-on in the 17th over but, when he attempted a repeat two balls later and was caught at deep midwicket, any prospect of a competitive score disappeared with him.New Zealand off-spinner Jeetan Patel then mopped up the tail, removing Tom Smith and Richard Coughtrie to finish with 2 for 18.

Ferraz não vê Santos favorito e 'esconde' time titular contra o Verdão

Mexeu praticamente no time todo.

BPL payments delayed again

Zimbabwe’s Elton Chigumbura and Hamilton Masakadza have claimed they are yet to be paid the second installment of payments for their participation in the Bangladesh Premier League

Elton Chigumbura: “Ultimately we are there to earn money, we love cricket, but it’s also a job for us”•BCB

Zimbabwe’s Elton Chigumbura and Hamilton Masakadza have claimed they are yet to be paid the second installment of payments for their participation in the Bangladesh Premier League. The two appeared for Sylhet Royals, which is among five franchises that haven’t paid the Bangladesh Cricket Board the second installmentAccording to the players’ contract this season, the first installment was to be paid before the start of the tournament while the second was due at the end of it. The third installment is to be paid within six months of the tournament’s end.The BCB had taken over the responsibility of player payments this year after there were irregularities by the franchises in the inaugural edition of 2012. But as per the current process, the board needs to receive the amount from the franchises before paying the players. According to BPL secretary Ismail Haider Mallick, the BCB have only received money for the second installment from Dhaka Gladiators and Duronto Rajshahi.”It is true that five out of seven franchises haven’t made payments after the first 25%,” Mallick told ESPNcricinfo. “Our lawyers have told us that we have to wait till May 15 before sending out legal notices. We will take action if we are not paid by that time.””The BCB has taken up the responsibility of paying the players mainly because of what happened after the first edition of the BPL. We will continue to do so, but the franchises have to pay us the players’ fees. Once they fail to make the payments, we will take out the bank guarantees to pay the players.”Masakadza was bought in the players’ auction for $30,000, but has only received the first 25% of the payment. He played in seven matches for the Royals, making 90 runs at an average of 12.85.”I was so excited when I was bought in the auction,” Masakadza said. “The experience of being involved in the tournament was great but it has become a real disappointment since that our second payment is still due, and I’ve been waiting patiently for ten weeks now.”Chigumbura echoed his Zimbabwe team-mate’s concerns, reminding the Sylhet Royals to ensure payment. He averaged 44.33 with the bat, picked up 13 wickets and hit the most number of sixes in the tournament – 19.”I hope the organisers can arrange the payments very, very soon as we had our first payment during the event,” Chigumbura said. “But the next payment does not seem to be coming. I have waited more than two months already since it should have been paid.””It’s a shame because I have great memories of the tournament, as I finished as the highest six-hitter in the whole thing. But ultimately we are there to earn money, we love cricket, but it’s also a job for us.”

-O Arana ganhou titularidade comigo.
