Marcus Trescothick took his run tally in his last five County Championship innings to 551 with a superb 128 on a rain-delayed opening day against Durham at Taunton. The former England opener followed up scored of 188 not out against Kent and 228 not out against Essex with another powerful exhibition as Somerset ran up 287 for 4. Arul Suppiah made 54 and Nick Compton 45.Play did not start until 1.10pm because of rain, but only 15 overs were lost. Durham’s bowlers faced a tough task maintaining line and length in a strong gusty wind, but stuck to their task well, Dale Benkenstein removing Compton and Trescothick for figures of 2 for 17 from three overs.Trescothick won the toss and elected to take first use of a green looking pitch, which as is so often the case at Taunton, did not offer as much assistance to the seamer as its appearance suggested. Suppiah helped his captain put on 119 for the first wicket and had reached a half-century off 85 balls with 10 fours before being trapped lbw by a delivery from former team-mate Ian Blackwell that looked to turn.Trescothick blasted 11 fours in reaching fifty off 71 deliveries and was unbeaten on 78 when tea was taken at 154 for 1 after 40 overs. The final session also featured 40 overs and saw Trescothick and Compton extend their second wicket stand to 113 before the latter aimed to clip Benkenstein away on the leg side and Scott Borthwick took a sharp catch at short mid-wicket.Trescothick had reached his hundred off 149 balls, with 17 fours, and celebrated with his only six, pulled over a short mid-wicket boundary off Benkenstein. The bowler got his revenge soon afterwards as the Somerset captain, eager to press the accelerator, drove in the air to extra cover where Mark Stoneman took a comfortable catch.From 232 for 1 Somerset were suddenly 249 for 4 when James Hildreth, one of only two batsmen with more runs than Trescothick in the Championship First Division, failed for once and was yorked by Matthew Claydon for 7.It will not have escaped Somerset’s notice that Blackwell got several balls to turn in the closing overs, a sight which may well have had Murali Kartik rubbing his hands at the prospect of bowling left-arm spin at the Durham batsmen later in the game.

Newcastle United have held talks with the agent of Rangers teenager Alex Lowry, according to Football Insider.

Lowry is 18 years of age and is primarily an attacking midfielder who can also play as a right-winger or even in a deeper midfield role.

The Scot has already made four senior appearances for Rangers, scoring once and providing one assist. Former Ibrox boss Graeme Murty labelled Lowry’s self-confidence as ‘remarkable’, with reports back in February suggesting the teenager has turned down a three-and-a-half-year deal at Ibrox.

His current contract expires in 2023, and it looks as if Newcastle are now leading the race for his services.

The Latest: Hotel meeting

Football Insider shared an update regarding Lowry and Newcastle on Monday morning after being informed by a recruitment source.

They claimed that head of recruitment Steve Nickson met Lowry’s agent in a hotel prior to Newcastle’s Premier League win over Wolves earlier this month.

The report stated that the Magpies are at the front of the queue for the Rangers youngster, who also has interest elsewhere.

The Verdict: Shrewd move

It looks as if Lowry could be a future star with a number of top-tier sides keen on his services, so Newcastle’s decision to meet with his agent and outline their plans could turn out to be a shrewd move.

It would be interesting to see what Newcastle would do with Lowry, should a move to St. James’ Park go through. He already has senior experience in Scotland, and with Eddie Howe having just two attacking midfielders on the books, it could present an opportunity for Lowry to flirt between the club’s Under-23 ranks and first-team squad.

A clear pathway through to first-team football should be outlined by the Magpies, so it looks as if this could be a transfer to watch closely.

To get a player of Dybala’s quality for free is surely a no-brainer, perhaps regardless of whatever his potentially remarkable wage demands are.

Hailed as ‘world-class’ by former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson, the Argentina international has won as many as five Serie A titles with the Old Lady, as well as many other accolades (Transfermarkt).

He has over 200 combined goals and assists for club and country over the course of his career so far, and at 28 years of age, is still at the peak of his powers.

Nonetheless, bringing him in through the door on Tyneside would certainly send out a big message to the rest of the world that the Magpies mean business.

According to O’Rourke, the possibility of West Ham signing both Raphinha and Phillips will become far more realistic if the east London club secure a top four finish in the league.

The Verdict: Still seems unlikely

With Leeds’ reluctance to let either one of their star players leave in January, it seems unlikely that this rhetoric will change come the end of the season, especially if the Irons have to break their transfer record twice.

According to journalist Jacque Talbot, who writes for the likes of The Mirror and The Guardian, both Raphinha and Phillips are in discussions with the Whites over contract renewals.

Therefore, if the Hammers choose to go back in for the pair, they could well be met by two massive price tags, especially if other big clubs jump into the race and start a bidding war.
