'Won't run away from responsibility' – Dhoni

MS Dhoni has left his future as captain in the selectors’ hands, but he has also said he won’t run away from the responsibility

Sidharth Monga09-Dec-2012MS Dhoni has left his future as captain in the selectors’ hands, but he has also said he won’t run away from the responsibility.”As a leader this is a challenge thrown at me,” Dhoni said moments after India completed their first set of back-to-back home Test losses since 1999-2000. “It is always good to lead a side when you are performing well. That is not the time you need a leader. Leading a side is all about when the team is not doing well. To try to gel the team together. To back the youngsters, back the seniors. Try to move in the right direction.”The easiest thing to do for me right now is to quit the captaincy and stay part of the side. That’s running away from responsibility that’s upon us. Of course there are others who will decide. There is BCCI and other administrative people who look into that. For me, my responsibility is to get the team together and be prepared for the next Test match.”As usual, Dhoni contradicted himself in the same answer when asked to elaborate on Duncan Fletcher’s role. He said, rightly so, that the team shouldn’t look for excuses and scapegoats, but in the same breath he made these Test defeats sound like an aberration, failing to admit to the lows that the team has reached.”He [Fletcher] has got excellent technical knowledge about our batting,” Dhoni said. “He guides us in the right direction. Ultimately once you cross that rope you are on your own whatever happens. That’s the time you have to get up and retaliate. That’s where we are lacking as of now.”It’s wrong to question the coach. We have won quite a few series, the ODI performance have been really good. In between we have won Test series. Okay in Australia and England we struggled, but this is a series after that that we have not done well, the last two matches that you see. You shouldn’t really look for excuses, to put it on the coach. Ultimately it is up to the 11 players who turn up on the field. On a wicket like this, you need to score more runs, and the situation will be different.”For the record, India have been knocked out of two ODI tournaments this year, they have lost to Bangladesh, and were disappointing in World Twenty20 too. In Tests, they have won at home, and that too against West Indies and New Zealand. In the West Indies, they won one Test and refused to try to win another. The Test record under Fletcher is 10 defeats to six wins. Reduce it to strong opposition, and it becomes 9-1. This is not to put all the blame on Fletcher, but to clarify that India haven’t won much at all, unlike what the captain believes.Dhoni also said the side’s batting can’t run away from responsibility either. The first question he was asked at the press conference was, “How bad does it need to get before it gets better?” Dhoni didn’t answer directly, but responded with a description of batting failures.”The batting order will have to take responsibility,” he said. “We need to score more runs. This was a very good wicket to bat on. Of course the bowlers will bowl a few good deliveries that you need to keep out. But the top seven, most of us will have to score at the same time so that we can get a par total, which the bowlers can look to defend. If you don’t score too many runs in the first innings and if the opposition score runs in the first innings, you will find yourself under pressure.”Dhoni said this was not the worst phase of his career. The worst came in England and Australia, he said, for at least here they can hope to rectify the problems. “If you talk about the low, the England, Australia series were the lows because we weren’t able to compete,” he said. “Here we know what the faults are and we should be able to rectify those. Overall the bowlers are doing well, I think. Once you don’t get enough runs on the board you question bowlers too as to if they would have defended a bigger score as well, but I think the spinners have done really well. Bit more contribution from the fast bowlers would really help.”On the fast bowlers, the obvious question was about Zaheer Khan’s effectiveness and fitness. “It’s a very technical question,” Dhoni said. “The beauty of it is we all know the problem and it will be great help if find out a solution. Everybody is asking the same question.”As far as the fitness is concerned, he has been the way he is for the last few years. Definitely he is not unfit, he is doing everything. The England batsmen are doing well. From behind it looks as if he is bowling in the right area. Bowlers sometimes go through a phase when they don’t get wickets. This is a phase maybe. As far as the bowling is concerned he is still bowling quite the same. He is swinging it both ways. We will have to wait and watch. He looks fit. Fitness is not an issue.”We will wait and watch indeed. Dhoni was due to go to a selection meeting soon after leaving the ground.

Watson surplus to series unless he can bowl

Shane Watson is surplus to Australia’s requirements for the Test series against South Africa unless he can prove himself fit enough to bowl

Shane Watson is an increasingly doubtful starter for the second Test in Adelaide after the team performance manager Pat Howard stated he would be surplus to Australia’s requirements against South Africa unless he can prove himself fit enough to bowl.In the most blunt declaration yet that Watson needs to retain his allrounder status in order to remain an integral part of Australia’s planning, Howard stated that John Inverarity’s selection panel had placed great store in the ability of batsmen to bowl, particularly when faced with a batting line-up as deep as South Africa’s.The selectors are currently discussing the composition of their squad for the Adelaide Test ahead of a likely announcement on Friday, and Watson cannot be expected to be considered unless he proves himself capable of bowling plenty of overs in the second match of the series.Watson is understood to be thinking conservatively about returning to the bowling crease, making the Perth Test or even the Sri Lanka series that follows the South Africa Tests more likely avenues for his international return.”Shane is progressing, if the Test match was tomorrow he wouldn’t be playing, but he’s progressing and I think when the team goes in on Sunday we’ll have a far better indication of where he’s at,” Howard said in Brisbane.”For different series there are different policies, there’s a position the selection panel take. There are times over the past 12 months where he has been considered in both roles and sometimes as a batsman only, but very much at Adelaide they’re looking to his bowling and his fitness around bowling, to see if he’s capable of doing both.”As you saw during the Test match the other day, a fair few bowlers were called on, and Shane’s value to be able to do both is pretty strong. It would go against him significantly [if he can’t bowl].”In seeking to assess Watson’s fitness, Cricket Australia had considered making him available to play for New South Wales in a domestic limited overs match against Victoria at North Sydney Oval on Sunday, but that possibility now appears remote. Instead Watson will need to show his ability to bowl in the nets, before following up with further training spells in Adelaide.”The value and the balance of the team is what the selection panel talk about, it’s the panel’s call on how they come together on this,” Howard said. “They assess all of that, the value of it, I know John Inverarity looks very much at what is our ability to bowl lots and lots of overs.”We were in a pretty unique position the other day when Rob Quiney bowled for us and doesn’t bowl for Victoria, so the ability for people to take up some bowling slack credibly is important. Without making it a Shane Watson conversation, the ability to take overs up was pretty well demonstrated in the first Test.”Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood can again be expected to be part of the team in Adelaide, even if the selectors choose not to change the bowling line-up that looked far more threatening in the second innings of the Brisbane Test than the first. Starc and Hazlewood are currently bowling for NSW against the Bushrangers in a Sheffield Shield fixture at the SCG.”We had a fair few bowlers around the squad in the lead-up to the Test,” Howard said. “Josh Hazlewood was there as well as Mitchell, so we’re very much making sure guys are ingrained in the squad. We did that all last year, so we want that extra bowler around to get involved in the culture, and to make sure they’re ready to do the job required.”

Somerset clinch runners-up spot

Abdur Rehman finished with match figures of 14 for 101 as Somerset clinched runners-up spot in Division One

13-Sep-2012
ScorecardAbdur Rehman finished with match figures of 14 for 101 as Somerset clinched runners-up spot in Division One with victory over relegated Worcestershire by an innings and 148 runs at Taunton.Rehman took 5 for 36 as the visitors stumbled to 152 all out in their second innings, Alexei Kervezee top-scoring with 76 and Peter Trego claiming his 50th first-class wicket of the season. The hosts took 23 points to Worcestershire’s two as their players guaranteed themselves a share in a £162,000 cheque for finishing second behind champions Warwickshire.Somerset had batted on at the start of the day before declaring their first innings on 512 for 9, with a lead of 300. Nick Compton finished unbeaten on 155, just six short of 1,500 first-class runs. Compton, who faced 322 balls and hit 15 fours and a six, was left with a first-class average of 99.60 when the declaration came. Six more runs would have left him averaging 100.Moeen Ali returned figures of 4 for 143, but by far the best Worcestershire bowler was Alan Richardson, who claimed his 500th first-class victim when pinning Alfonso Thomas lbw for 17, and finished with 4 for 100 from 41 overs.A three-day finish always looked likely and Worcestershire lost two wickets in scoring 39 before lunch. Phil Hughes edged Trego to wicketkeeper Steve Snell and Daryl Mitchell was caught at slip off Rehman. The Hughes wicket sparked wild celebrations among the fielders as they all mobbed Trego for whom it was a notable milestone in his career. The 31-year-old all-rounder had never threatened to take 50 wickets before, but has bowled more overs than ever for Somerset because of injuries this season. After lunch there was a predictable procession of batsmen. Thomas trapped Neil Pinner leg before for 14 and Craig Overton struck in his first over as Marcus Trescothick took a sharp catch at second slip to send back Moeen for 24.Rehman then produced perfectly pitched turning deliveries to bowl Aneesh Kapil and Brett D’Olivera, both pushing forward defensively, before Ben Cox fell to a brilliant catch at mid-wicket by Arul Suppiah as he pulled a short ball from Steve Kirby. It was 129 for 8 when Chris Russell was snapped up at leg-slip by Trego off a Rehman arm-ball, having made only a single. Kervezee stood defiant, reaching his half-century off 64 balls with six fours, although he was steadily running out of partners as Nick Harrison played on to Thomas and departed for a duck.Kervezee was the last wicket to fall, pouched at slip by Trescothick off Man-of-the-Match Rehman.

Australia to make their Canberra debut

Australia will play an international match in Canberra for the first time next summer, as part of the national capital’s centenary celebrations

Australia will play an international match in Canberra for the first time next summer, as part of the national capital’s centenary celebrations. Cricket Australia and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government have agreed that Manuka Oval will host an ODI as part of the 2012-13 Commonwealth Bank Series, although it is yet to be confirmed who Australia’s opponent will be.Sri Lanka and West Indies are scheduled to visit Australia for the one-day portion of the summer, which is expected to take place in January-February, ahead of Australia’s Test tour of India. Sri Lanka have played an ODI in Canberra already, against India in 2007-08, and it was only the second international held at Manuka Oval, which also hosted South Africa and Zimbabwe during the 1992 World Cup.Canberra could also be in line to become a venue for the 2015 World Cup, to be shared between Australia and New Zealand. Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland said a planned upgrade to the ground would hold it in good stead to become a more regular international venue in future.”This is an historic moment for cricket in the nation’s capital and a great way to help celebrate the Centenary of Canberra,” Sutherland said. “Canberra continues to play an important role in Australian cricket producing some of our best national players and hosting the annual Prime Minister’s XI match.”The ACT government’s commitment to upgrading Manuka Oval will not only help to position it to host future international and domestic cricket matches, including matches in the 2015 Cricket World Cup, but it will also help grow the game of cricket in Canberra and surrounding areas which is critical to our vision for cricket to be Australia’s favourite sport.”Apart from hosting the annual Prime Minister’s XI match and occasional tour games, Canberra has largely been off the radar of elite cricket in the past few years. The ACT fielded a side known as the Comets in Australia’s domestic one-day competition in the final three years of the 1990s, but the team did not last into the 21st century. The city has helped develop some of Australia’s current Test cricketers, though. The wicketkeeper Brad Haddin learnt his cricket in the Canberra area and played for the Comets before attracting the attention of New South Wales. The offspinner Nathan Lyon also has fond memories of Manuka Oval, where he was a groundsman while playing club cricket in Canberra, which led to him spotted by South Australia.
