Pomersbach powers Heat to final

A powerful unbeaten century from Luke Pomersbach led Brisbane heat to the BBL final after downing the Melbourne Renegades by 15 runs in the first semi-final

The Report by Alex Malcolm in Melbourne15-Jan-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsA powerful unbeaten century from Luke Pomersbach led Brisbane heat to the BBL final after downing the Melbourne Renegades by 15 runs in the first semi-final.Scarcely at any stage during this BBL was the Brisbane side in the top four in the standings, yet now they have qualified for the Champions League, helped by two stunning Pomersbach innings back to back. The Renegades were given a boost at the toss when the Heat lost their captain James Hopes in the warm-up to a hamstring strain. Stand-in Chris Hartley elected to bat and cued more pyrotechnics from Pomersbach, following his innings against the Hobart Hurricanes. In the third over, he opened the shoulders, swinging a Darren Pattinson delivery powerfully to the leg boundary twice in consecutive deliveries. Peter Forrest fell in the same over, trying to clear mid-on. Pomersbach seemed oblivious to the loss of his opening partner, and clubbed four boundaries in the next nine balls. The Renegades turned to their trump cards Aaron O’Brien and Muttiah Muralitharan to put a halt to the easy scoring. But when Aaron Finch tried to wedge in an over from Pattinson, Joe Burns taxed 14 from it, dispatching a full toss to the cover rope and a length ball to the top tier at square leg, to raise the rate again.Pomersbach cruised to 50 from 36 balls, and the partnership reached 80 before Burns holed out to Finch in the 14th over. But Pomersbach made Finch pay for it, smashing three fours and a six from the rest of the over. The left-hand batsman did not just target the pacemen and the part-timers. He audaciously took on Muralitharan, reverse sweeping him to the rope, cracking him through cover, and slog sweeping him over the long-on fence. He reached his first T20 century, and just the ninth in the tournament’s history, with 11 balls left in the innings, and eventually scored with an unbeaten 112 off just 70 balls. Chris Lynn finished with a flourish to lift the Heat’s total to an imposing 3 for 183.The Renegades started the chase brightly, thumping 34 from the first three overs. Ben Cutting entered fresh from international duties to castle Alex Hales. The Heat did not field as well as they had batted, dropping four catches during the Renegades chase, but their bowlers were able to complete victory regardless of it. Alister McDermott, Daniel Christian, Kemar Roach, Nathan Hauritz and Cutting all delivered boundary-less overs after the early assault, and Forrest held a chance to remove Alex Doolan. Finch fell two balls later to an unlikely conqueror in Lynn to leave the Renegades reeling. But again Ben Rohrer emerged from the wreckage to play another wonderful hand and keep the home side in the hunt. His 42 from just 22 balls featured three magnificent sixes. He and Tom Cooper assaulted Christian in the 12th over, clearing the rope three times between them.Cutting returned to shatter Cooper’s stumps. Rohrer then launched Lynn into the stands, before holing out trying to repeat the stroke. A Renegades wicket fell in each of the last five overs as they pursued the 61 runs still required in that period. It was a target they fell 16 runs shy of to end their hopes of tournament success. The Heat will either remain in Melbourne for Saturday’s final, or travel to Perth, to meet the victor of Wednesday’s second semi-final.

Somerset clinch runners-up spot

Abdur Rehman finished with match figures of 14 for 101 as Somerset clinched runners-up spot in Division One

13-Sep-2012
ScorecardAbdur Rehman finished with match figures of 14 for 101 as Somerset clinched runners-up spot in Division One with victory over relegated Worcestershire by an innings and 148 runs at Taunton.Rehman took 5 for 36 as the visitors stumbled to 152 all out in their second innings, Alexei Kervezee top-scoring with 76 and Peter Trego claiming his 50th first-class wicket of the season. The hosts took 23 points to Worcestershire’s two as their players guaranteed themselves a share in a £162,000 cheque for finishing second behind champions Warwickshire.Somerset had batted on at the start of the day before declaring their first innings on 512 for 9, with a lead of 300. Nick Compton finished unbeaten on 155, just six short of 1,500 first-class runs. Compton, who faced 322 balls and hit 15 fours and a six, was left with a first-class average of 99.60 when the declaration came. Six more runs would have left him averaging 100.Moeen Ali returned figures of 4 for 143, but by far the best Worcestershire bowler was Alan Richardson, who claimed his 500th first-class victim when pinning Alfonso Thomas lbw for 17, and finished with 4 for 100 from 41 overs.A three-day finish always looked likely and Worcestershire lost two wickets in scoring 39 before lunch. Phil Hughes edged Trego to wicketkeeper Steve Snell and Daryl Mitchell was caught at slip off Rehman. The Hughes wicket sparked wild celebrations among the fielders as they all mobbed Trego for whom it was a notable milestone in his career. The 31-year-old all-rounder had never threatened to take 50 wickets before, but has bowled more overs than ever for Somerset because of injuries this season. After lunch there was a predictable procession of batsmen. Thomas trapped Neil Pinner leg before for 14 and Craig Overton struck in his first over as Marcus Trescothick took a sharp catch at second slip to send back Moeen for 24.Rehman then produced perfectly pitched turning deliveries to bowl Aneesh Kapil and Brett D’Olivera, both pushing forward defensively, before Ben Cox fell to a brilliant catch at mid-wicket by Arul Suppiah as he pulled a short ball from Steve Kirby. It was 129 for 8 when Chris Russell was snapped up at leg-slip by Trego off a Rehman arm-ball, having made only a single. Kervezee stood defiant, reaching his half-century off 64 balls with six fours, although he was steadily running out of partners as Nick Harrison played on to Thomas and departed for a duck.Kervezee was the last wicket to fall, pouched at slip by Trescothick off Man-of-the-Match Rehman.

Players welcome BCB's contracts decision

BCB’s decision to give contracts to 120 cricketers from January next year is being welcomed as a step towards finally making cricket an inclusive sport

Mohammad Isam02-Jul-2012The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) decision to give contracts to 120 cricketers from January 2013 is being welcomed as a step towards finally making cricket an inclusive sport, dismantling the “winner-takes-all” system and decentralising cricket in the country. Cricketers say it will take the sport to the grassroots as it has not done in the past four decades. The development was a huge boost to the morale of many cricketers who have endured financial uncertainity. For one such domestic performer, Enamul Haque jr, the rest of his cricket career promises to be different.”It is a positive move for Bangladesh cricket,” Enamul told ESPNcricinfo. “For the next generation of cricketers, it will be a massive encouragement. There is always the motivation to play cricket and to play for the country, but to have a salary is a massive boost. When we used to play in the Under-19s or Academy, there wasn’t much money so this will help the youngsters.”Enamul, a 27-year-old left-arm spinner, was the leading wicket-taker in the 2011-12 National Cricket League and is also the only Bangladesh bowler to take more than 300 first-class wickets. Enamul, however, hasn’t played for Bangladesh since 2009 and had to play club cricket in England for sustenance.”When I saw the news last night I was really happy. I can see that everyone here in the Bangladesh A camp is equally delighted,” Enamul said. “It should have happened a few years ago, but finally the board has taken this decision. In Sri Lanka I think 70-odd cricketers are contracted with the board.”Another fringe player Shamsur Rahman, who has never played for Bangladesh but was the third highest run-scorer in this year’s first-class competition, echoed Enamul’s sentiments. However, Rahman hoped to see the initiative implemented soon, primarily because the BCB has often talked about decentralisation but never gone forward with it.”It should have happened before but I’m happy that they have finally taken this initiative. I would urge them to fulfil this, and not just keep it as a proposal,” Shamsur said. “It will create a lot of competition for places in the tournaments, players wouldn’t just turn up and play. And I can predict that the level of competition and quality will go up with this new system.”Despite being a popular game, cricket in Bangladesh has always maintained geographical and economic exclusivity. It was a Dhaka-based sport that had players mainly from colleges and universities with affluent backgrounds. Gradually, the game gained popularity in cities like Chittagong and Khulna; the biggest boost arrived between 1997 and 2000, when Bangladesh won the ICC Trophy and gained Test status. But the Dhaka leagues, with the advantage of superior infrastructure, have been the major attraction for professional cricketers. Although, cricket tournaments are played at union and divisional levels, the lack of organisation meant that major districts, like Mymensingh, were left without a proper cricket completion for years. The introduction of the National Cricket League (NCL) in 1999 didn’t make much of a difference and only the national-level cricketers benefitted financially from the BCB contracts. However, the payments have increased significantly in the Dhaka Premier League over the years with a few uncapped cricketers earning up to Tk 20 lakh ($25,000) per season, the average being Tk 5 lakh ($6250). In comparison, the players in this season’s first-class competition got Tk 10,000 ($125) per game in the first round, Tk 15,000 ($188) in the second round and Tk 20,000 ($250) in the finals, prompting the media to dub the NCL as a ‘picnic tournament’. The proposed salary structure would give much-needed financial security to the players. The decision, which requires a financial commitment of Tk 35 million ($437,500) per year according to board chief Mustafa Kamal, came after the BCB secured a sponsorship deal worth $14 million for the next four years with the Sahara group.Apart from the players’ benefitting, the BCB’s decision to appoint former cricketers as operations managers in different regions is likely to bring professionalism in the organisation of regional cricket.

South Africa must 'get off the wave'

The only thing standing between South Africa and victory in the second Test at Headingley, which would seal the series and take them to No. 1, is their state of mind, according to middle-order batsman Jacques Rudolph. After their innings-and-12-run win at The Oval and a batting performance Allan Donald said “can’t get any better,” there would appear very few areas of improvement for the squad. But, having seen first-hand how the only place to go from the top is down, with England losing five out of nine Tests since becoming the world’s best, Rudolph said South Africa have to be careful with how they respond to a big win.”Our challenge will be to get off the wave of the first Test match, from a mental point of view,” Rudolph said. “Obviously it was a convincing win for us but we are not too results orientated. We expect a strong fight back and we are prepared for what we are going to face.”South Africa have a good record at Headingley, having only lost one of the four Tests they have played here since readmission. In 1994, Peter Kirsten’s century forced a draw, in 2003, Jacques Kallis’ six wickets won the match and in 2008, AB de Villiers and Ashwell Prince put on 212 runs for the fifth-wicket to give South Africa what proved a series-winning lead.Rudolph believes it is the ideal place for them to hold on to their series lead. “From a team point of view, we can take quite a lot of confidence from how we played here in the past,” he said. With that much experience at the ground, including Rudolph’s knowledge from five years of playing at Yorkshire, he believes the team will be properly prepared. While Rudolph said the information he is sharing with his team-mates is “not new,” he hopes it can provide some important insight.”There is a strong perception that Headingley is more a bowler’s kind of wicket but in my experience here, especially when the sun is out, it’s a really nice place to bat,” he said. The average runs per wicket has increased from 27.91 in the 1980s to 34.18 in the 2000s, an indication that the green mamba is not as venomous as before, something Rudolph could confirm. “Once you get yourself in and get used to the swing and a little bit of seam movement you can get yourself in.”South Africa have squashed any speculation that will consider an all-pace attack with every member of the squad saying the XI is likely to be unchanged but Rudolph hinted that Imran Tahir, the legspinner, may have to change his approach.”It won’t be as dry as The Oval and it won’t be as bouncy or turn as much. From a spinner’s point of view, you’ve got to adapt your game plan and maybe be a little bit more containing as opposed to attacking.”JP Duminy’s offspin may have a role to play, in addition to his batting at No.7, although he has not had much time in the middle doing. Duminy has scored a total of 94 runs in four innings on the tour and has bowled 27 overs across the four matches he has played.Rudolph said too much should not be read into warm-ups because the rest of the preparation has gone well. “We are quite used to playing back to back matches and getting into a rhythm but here we have had a lot of time off and you have to find ways to keep yourself fresh.”Personally, I find that in the warm up games the intensity is not really there because it is not as competitive as a Test match. But Gary Kirsten is quite strong on the fact that you’ve got to be aware of your own space and preparation. “

Elgar's all-round show gives Knights win

A round-up of the Ram Slam T20 Challenge matches played on March 14, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Mar-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsKnights won a nailbiter against the Warriors in Port Elizabeth, as they held on to a six-run margin, with Dean Elgar starring with both bat and ball. With this result the Knights moved up to second place, still eight points behind the Lions. Knights chose to bat, but lost both openers cheaply with the score on 9. Obus Pienaar and Elgar combined for 37 runs to add some stability, before Pienaar was dismissed. Elgar and Pite van Biljon put together 61, with Elgar finishing unbeaten on 61, as Knights reached 114 for 4.Warriors in response looked set to overhaul the target as they moved along at the required rate. Contributions from Ashwell Prince (37) and Davy Jacobs (30) helped steer the ship. However, once Elgar came on to bowl, the match began to shift in the Knights’ favour, as he picked up both Prince and Jacobs, then followed it up by picking off Samit Patel and Adrian McLaren. In the final over, the Warriors required 15 runs, and a tight over from Jandree Coetzee ensured they held on by six runs.
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsA four-wicket haul by Calvin Savage helped Dolphins beat Cape Cobras by 22 runs in Durban. Dolphins were put into bat, with opener Divan van Wyk and Cody Chetty involved in a 42-run stand for the second wicket, to assure Dolphins a good start. Daryn Smit’s unbeaten 33 off 17 balls helped push the total to 158 for 7. Dane Piedt was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 16.Cape Cobras lost opener Yaseen Vallie for a duck, and simply couldn’t put together substantial partnerships, as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Dane Vilas played a lone hand with 47 off 40, but the rest of the batting crumbed as Mthokozisi Shezi and Savage combined to pick up six of seven wickets. The required run-rate was beyond them throughout their 20 overs, with Savage picking up 4 for 33.
