Leeds: Orta had a nightmare on Kudus

Leeds United were one of the busier Premier League clubs over the course of the summer transfer window, with Victor Orta bringing in no less than eight new additions to Jesse Marsch’s first-team squad, as well as strengthening the Whites’ U23 side with the signing of Sonny Perkins on a free transfer.

However, one player Leeds’ director of football was reported to be interested in a €12m (£10m) move for and ultimately missed out on was Ajax central midfielder Mohammed Kudus, something that, considering his impressive so far this season, appears to have been a big mistake by the Spaniard.

Indeed, over his six Eredivisie appearances – only one of which has come as a start – so far this season, the £9m-rated talent has been in sensational form, scoring three goals, as well as taking an average of one shot – 0.7 of which have hit the target – completing 2.0 dribbles and winning 2.6 duels – at a success rate of 61% – per game.

These returns have seen the £14k-per-week Ghana international average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.22, ranking him as Alfred Schreuder’s 11th-best performer in the top flight of Dutch football.

However, it was during De Godenzonen’s 4-0 Champions League demolition of Glasgow Rangers last week in which the 22-year-old proved his undoubted ability, completing five of his six attempted dribbles, being successful with all of his attempted 27 passes, winning five of his eight duels, setting Steven Berghuis up for his side’s second of the game and – putting the icing on the cake – scoring a spectacular solo goal of his own to give Ajax a 3-0 lead.

These metrics saw the player who Erik ten Hag dubbed “incredible” and Owuraku Ampofo dubbed “special” earn a simply sensational SofaScore match rating of 8.2 – ranking him as the second-best performer in the fixture.

As such, considering how exciting a talent Kudus very much appears to be, in addition to the midfielder reportedly being available for an extremely reasonable £10m this summer, it would indeed appear as if Orta had something of a nightmare in not pushing overly hard for the Ghanaian’s signing – as he would very much look to be an incredible addition for the Whites.

Crystal Palace already readying big-money move for "monster"

Crystal Palace are already readying a January move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, according to Alan Nixon.

The Lowdown: Gallagher linked with Palace

The Eagles were heavily linked with another move for the 22-year-old following a hugely successful Selhurst Park loan spell last season, winning the club’s Player of the Year prize.

Reports last month suggested that Palace had made an approach and even a formal offer for the midfielder, but as we know, he remained at Stamford Bridge.

Gallagher has gone on to make five Premier League appearances for the Blues in the early weeks of the new campaign, but it looks as if Palace haven’t given up hope of securing his services.

The Latest: Gallagher to Palace update

Nixon shared a story for The Sun regarding Palace and Gallagher on Saturday evening.

He claimed that Steve Parish and the Eagles have the money to make a move and are already readying a £20m bid for the four-cap England international in January.

The Verdict: One to watch

Described as a ‘monster’ by Palace-supporting journalist Tom Dutton, Gallagher hasn’t had the best of starts under Thomas Tuchel. He was shown a red card against Leicester City last weekend and frustrated the Chelsea manager in Saturday’s 2-1 win over West Ham.

It will be interesting to see if he remains in the team over the coming months, with N’Golo Kante currently sidelined through injury and Denis Zakaria signed on deadline day.

If Gallagher falls out of favour at Stamford Bridge, then you’d like to think everyone involved could be open to a permanent exit, making this one to watch from a Palace perspective.

Agent says Nuno outcast is refusing to leave West Ham after rejected Saudi offer

West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo is already making his squad preferences crystal clear after replacing Graham Potter nearly a fortnight ago.

Nuno tasked with transforming West Ham as key decisions already made

Nuno arrived with fairly high expectations after a fairytale campaign at Nottingham Forest last season, with vice-chairman Karren Brady apparently a key driving force behind the appointment and the Portuguese’s long-term three-year deal (Alex Crook).

Tasked with stabilizing the team and pushing West Ham closer to European qualification spots than the relegation zone, Nuno has sought to imprint his style on the squad very quickly.

West Ham’s results in the Premier League so far

Sunderland 3-0 West Ham

West Ham 1-5 Chelsea

Nottingham Forest 0-3 West Ham

West Ham 0-3 Tottenham

West Ham 1-2 Crystal Palace

Everton 1-1 West Ham

Arsenal 2-0 West Ham

West Ham’s leaky defence, which has been a major weakness this season, particularly from set pieces, has already showed small glimpses of improvement under his guidance.

A torrid seven of their 16 Premier League goals conceded so far this season have come directly from corners, and it is absolutely imperative that Nuno fixes this glaring dead ball issue if West Ham are to avoid a drop back down to the Championship.

One of the tactician’s most notable and controversial decisions after his arrival was the exclusion of vice captain James Ward-Prowse from the first-team squad.

This move, which happened almost immediately after his first training session at Rush Green on the Saturday of Potter’s dismissal, signaled his clear intent to reshape the midfield and prioritize players who Nuno believes will fit his tactical blueprint.

Fabrizio Romano, among other reliable media sources, reports that Ward-Prowse could leave West Ham in January and other squad members, depending on Nuno’s assessment, could follow the 30-year-old.

Over the coming weeks, Nuno’s axe will likely swing again, and it is believed that fellow midfielder Guido Rodriguez could be its next victim.

The Argentine is yet to play a single minute under Nuno, featuring on the bench as an unused substitute against Everton and Arsenal, with West Ham apparently keen to offload him.

Guido Rodriguez refusing to leave West Ham after Saudi offer rejected

As per insider Claret & Hugh, who report that the player isn’t in Nuno’s plans, the East Londoners are having trouble when it comes to selling Rodriguez, coming after they signed the World Cup winner from Real Betis in 2024.

Nottingham Forest's Nicolas Dominguez in action with West Ham United'sGuidoRodriguez

C&H, quoting an agent, relay that Rodriguez rejected a big-money Saudi offer to leave West Ham in the summer alongside four other approaches, with the 31-year-old happy to stay put.

Sharing a further quote from one of their inside sources, West Ham’s recruitment has been described as a “real mess”, and this situation with Rodriguez perhaps emphasises their struggle to make any money back off players.

Rodriguez has made 26 total appearances for West Ham since his move from La Liga, and he’s been regularly linked with an exit since, including just a few months after his arrival at Rush Green.

This one can definitely be chalked off as yet another blunder from the Hammers recruitment team, but luckily for West Ham, any fee would count as pure profit considering he signed as a free agent.

Gambhir: Haven't taken a call on which three Tests Bumrah is going to play

India’s captain and coach confident that squad has enough fast-bowling depth to compensate for Bumrah missing some games

Gambhir: ‘Enough quality in squad to replace Bumrah’

India have not yet decided which Tests in the upcoming five-match series in England Jasprit Bumrah will play, but captain Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir were confident the depth of their pace attack would make up for his likely absence.”We haven’t taken that call, which three games is he going to play,” Gambhir said during India’s pre-departure press conference in Mumbai. “We are going to have a discussion with him and depending on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is heading. That is something which I am sure he is very well aware of as well and that is important.”When announcing India’s Test squad last month, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Bumrah had been advised by medical staff not to risk playing several consecutive Tests as part of his workload management. The precautionary measure came after Bumrah suffered a stress reaction in the back during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney in January and only returned to action after Mumbai Indians’ first four games in IPL 2025.India’s 18-man Test squad includes Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh as the other specialist fast bowlers, with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur the seam-bowling allrounders.Related

“I think we have picked enough bowlers and we have enough pace battery and a lot of fast bowlers are in a great space to be able to win us Test matches from any situation or any position,” Gill said. “Obviously when you have someone like Jasprit Bumrah, depending on how many matches he would play, whenever he would come back and play the match for us, it would be a great sight for us. But I think we have a great mix of bowlers and a great set of bowlers who can get the job for the team done.Gambhir said: “I have said it before during the Champions Trophy [which Bumrah missed and India won] as well, it will give someone the opportunity to put his hand up and we have got enough talent there. I know that he is quality but we have got enough quality apart from him as well in the squad.”The series is India’s first since the retirements of Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin and Virat Kohli from Test cricket, and Mohammed Shami is also missing from the squad. The five Tests against England will be India’s first in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. They play the first Test at Headingley (from June 20), the second at Edgbaston (from July 2), the third at Lord’s (from July 10), the fourth at Old Trafford (from July 23), and the final at The Oval (from July 31).They begin the tour with a four-day match against India A at Beckenham on the outskirts of London between June 13 and 16.

South Africa demolish Afghanistan to enter their maiden men's World Cup final

Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada ran through the top order as Afghanistan folded for 56, their lowest total in T20Is

South Africa’s quicks ravaged Afghanistan’s top order, taking five wickets inside the first five overs, to send the opposition spiralling towards their eventual 56 all out in the first semi-final of T20 World Cup 2024.Then, although they lost Quinton de Kock early, Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks calmly navigated the small chase on an exceedingly tricky Tarouba pitch. For a team infamous for playing jittery cricket in the knockouts, this win was dominant and clinical. South Africa left next to nothing to chance. They bowled beautifully, fielded well, and weathered some difficult early overs while pouncing on the loose balls.Related

Stats – South Africa men's maiden World Cup final, Afghanistan's lowest T20I total

As their reward, they have their first ever berth in a men’s World Cup final, and continued their unbeaten run in the tournament, which now is up to eight matches. The margin of victory, by nine wickets and with 67 balls remaining, underscored the control they exerted on this match, from start to finish.Jansen and Rabada rip out the top orderThe Tarouba surface not only offered lateral movement but also a lot of bounce early on. With the heights that Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada bring to the table, South Africa had a great attack to exploit conditions.Kagiso Rabada flattened Mohammad Nabi’s off stump•AFP/Getty Images

Jansen struck at the end of the first over to remove Afghanistan’s batter of the tournament – Rahmanullah Gurbaz – who edged a ball angled across him to Hendricks at slip. In his next over, Jansen bowled Gulbadin Naib through the gate with a delivery that darted back into him.Rabada’s first over sent Afghanistan really into a nosedive. He jagged two balls back and hit timber on both occasions. The ball that clipped the top of Ibrahim Zadran’s middle stump was the killer – Ibrahim at that point was Afghanistan’s best hope of getting to a good score. Fourth ball, he took out Mohammad Nabi’s off stump with an even more stunning delivery. That over was a double-wicket maiden.Nortje and Shamsi do the restWith the top five gone, and their middle order having failed to produce much right through the tournament, Afghanistan were seriously struggling. Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi closed down the innings from there. Nortje had Azmatullah Omarzai (the only Afghan batter to get to double figures) caught at deep point, then later knocked out Rashid Khan’s off stump.Shamsi bowled a leg-stump line to the right-handers and kept getting them lbw as the balls rushed onto them. They reviewed all three decisions, but the on-field umpires had given them out, and umpires’ calls on impact were good enough.Jonathan Trott and Rashid Khan during the innings break•ICC/Getty Images

Farooqi and Naveen can’t wreck South Africa’s top orderComing into this match, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq had 29 wickets between them. Their only chance of defending such a paltry score was running through the top order together.Farooqi added to his tournament-high wicket tally in his first over, setting de Kock up with some big outswingers before jagging one back in and making a mess of his stumps. And Naveen should have had Markram the next over, but most of Afghanistan’s players didn’t hear the thin edge to the wicketkeeper, and Rashid wasn’t sure enough of it to review the decision.Markram and Hendricks take the chase homeThere were still testing moments, as the pitch continued to play up, still often keeping low. But whenever Afghanistan bowled poor deliveries, South Africa’s batters pounced. The fifth over itself yielded 13 runs – more than a fifth of the target. South Africa got home in the ninth over, sparking restrained celebrations, even though this was a historic victory for them.

He's scored at Villa Park: Aston Villa racing to sign "fantastic" £42m star

Setting their sights on fresh targets, Aston Villa have now reportedly joined the race to sign an impressive £42m midfielder who already has a goal to his name at Villa Park.

Aston Villa face difficult summer

Whichever direction Aston Villa go down this summer, they must approach with caution. Their PSR concerns are likely to limit their spending unless they complete some ruthless sales. Those concerns make their defeat against Manchester United to cost them a Champions League place on the final day all the more frustrating for Unai Emery, who failed to hide his anger at the time.

Now, weeks on, it’s simply a situation that the Midlands club must prepare for. Rumours have already arrived as to who could be heading for the exit door as somewhat of a sacrifice for the Villans and it seems as though not many names are off the table completely.

Among those most mentioned has been Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine looked to be bidding an emotional farewell to Villa Park in the final home game of the season, sparking rumours that he could yet depart amid interest from the likes of Atletico Madrid.

Losing Martinez would be a frustrating but perhaps necessary blow for all involved at Villa Park, who could then have the chance to welcome incomings of their own. Already, Zepiqueno Redmond looks set to arrive on a free transfer from Feyenoord to commence Villa’s summer business, but they won’t want to stop there.

With Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford on their way back to their parent clubs, Emery has important roles to fill in his side and Villa have seemingly turned their focus towards signing a Premier League rival as a result.

Aston Villa racing to sign Mikkel Damsgaard

According to Caught Offside, Aston Villa are now racing to sign Mikkel Damsgaard from Brentford this summer. The Bees reportedly value the Danish midfielder at as much as €50m (£42m) amid interest from the Midlands club as well as Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and West Ham United.

Villa Park received a first-hand glimpse of Damsgaard’s quality when he scored Brentford’s only goal in an eventual 3-1 defeat at the hands of Emery’s side. Even in the face of defeat, however, the 24-year-old showed what he’s capable of.

With 11 assists to his name last season – a number that only Mohamed Salah, Jacob Murphy and Anthony Elanga bettered – Damsgaard was often at the centre of Thomas Frank’s praise.

The Brentford boss told reporters after victory over Leicester in December: “He just got better and better.Today he was fantastic in every way possible. He had another performance and also did an assist. He ties our team and games together amazingly. It’s cool to see.”

Finally realising his potential, it may not be long before Damsgaard is on the move away from Brentford and perhaps even towards Villa Park if the Midlands club make their move this summer.
